A very nice application worked very good on nokia n97 but such nice application should be made for other nokia s60 5th edition phones as well, like nokia 5800, i would love it if something like this is made for my phone as well.

These BOTS would be great on my 5530 XpressMusic. Anything that automates routine procedures is ideal. Plus it would take some of the bragging rights away from my iPhone / iTouch snobby friends! LOL!

The first Android phone (G1) is getting the latest version of Android software (2.1).
Meanwhile, Symbian 5th edition will be soon replaced by ^3 and all cool apps will migrate or be developed for ^3 only. All ^3 users will laugh at N97 owners, like they laugh at all of those who still have their 3rd edition devices. (Just to remind you: Nokia is still selling brand new 3rd edition phones.)
I don't want Nokia Bots (which seems to be a very interesting app) to support 3rd edition. I want to upgrade my 3rd edition device to Symbian ^3!
Its not that applications released for s60 5th ed remain for 5th edition only. They are later on released for s60 3rd ed also.
Take Nokia Diagnostics for example, initially released for s60 5th ed, is now available for s60 3rd ed also.

Its a sales tactic. Even Nokia Maps V3 is not supported for 3rd ED. With Nokia you have to change handset every 15-18 months. Too costly. I would prefer Android Phone as my next choice..

The development teams need to start with a small limited number of devices and then increase as the development progresses. the initial version being tested at present relies on a homescreen widget for interfacing and the 5800 does not have a homescreen compatible with this.

We are happy to see that Nokia Bots have been received so well and you've been busy suggesting new Bots and devices to be supported.
As pointed out in the other discussion that was linked by mbrett, also in this project we have started with a small number of devices, and selected a few phones that have good support for homescreen wigdets as they are important to the Nokia Bots concept as a whole.
We are indeed looking for possibilities to expand the number of supported devices right now. However, as has been pointed out earlier, some devices have more limited homescreen implementations, and older phones do not have homescreen widgets at all. Therefore, the Bots concept would probably appear somewhat differently in these devices and some Bots might not be feasible at all. At this point it is not possible to give release dates or even promises of support for more devices.
Also please remember that resources of the development team are of course limited, and we have to find a reasonable balance between putting effort on increasing the number of supported devices and developing better/new Bots.

The reason as far as I know is that the 5800xm and X6 do not support homescreen widgets like the N97 and N97 mini have. This is the only reason.
However as Nokia bots works mainly in the background it would seem that a version for other V5 devices may be possible.

You're right. X6 and 5800 etc devices would require different widget implementaion. We have chosen to start with some devices (picked N97) and then proceed based on feedback. This very high interest for 5800 based implementations is of course now taken seriously and we will study how we could address those devices as well.

Its only for N97 and N97 mini at present as it requires widgets as the user interface. Something that S60 V3 does not support and some S60 V5 devices too.
Hopefully they will work out a way to add the functionality to other devices in the future

Thanks jeje, a little correction, correct phone model is Nokia 5230 not the 5320 :)
Anyways looking support for 5230 as well, such a nice phone and it should have the features similar to 5800 going forward.
And of course all the S60 5th edition phone should have the support of beta labs softwares.

5800 will never support homescreen widgets. That kind of feature is never added after product release. Future Nokia devices will, however.

Nokia Bots works best with the widget homescreen found on the N97, bringing support to other s60v5 devices will mean porting the homescreen over to the other devices. Considering that the 5800XM is equally powerful as the N97 in terms of hardware specifications, porting the homescreen over should not be a problem at all.
I sincerely hope homescreen and widget support will be extended to all touchscreen phones (5800/5230/5233/5530/X6)

No. This app is specifically design to be interfacd with via homescreen widgets. As only the N97 and N97 mini have homescreens these are the only phones supported for this app.
I can imagine that at some point in the future compatabilty could be expanded if the development team created a background application which could pop to the front to as/advise the user instead of using the widgets for certain bot features. Maybe this backgouns app could be braught to the front via a button press even.
There would still be issues with porting Shortcut and Contact bots as the user would not have the ability to view these bots due to the lack of homescreen.

as i have said earlier, homescreens can be added on by future firmware updates. i don't see why Nokia does not want to launch widgets interface on the 5800xm and other touchscreen phones

Since the phone's firmware can be updated, in theory it is possible to add almost any software feature even after a phone model is shipping. However, in practice it is a whole another story: all models are based on some product family, and moving a feature from one product family to another can be huge effort. Really. The homescreen is not anything like a simple currency converter app that can be taken in or out of a build easily, but something that is linked to so many places that it is quite a nightmare to replace it afterwards. It is not that Nokia doesn't want it to happen, but changes like this are just not practical.
same for e71 too. The amazing thing (about all betas) is, we are supposed to come here and beg for our devices to be supported while they are the majority of devices being sold.
All the features I read are perfect for business users who use E series, not some touch media phone.
It is like they insist on coding "for future" while in reality, non touch nokias are the king. They send a bad ,message to 3rd party devs too.

I understand that in order to implement nokia bots on models such as 5800 needs widget support but nokia has added widget support on nokia c6,which is quite similar to 5800.Almost every other manufacturer that sells phone on 5800's price range has widget support on it, even more interactive than on nokia.The reason companies like apple are actually popular is that they work really hard to provide features,even with the launch of ios4 they tried to offer as much features oldest iphone hardware could handle.On the contrary,n97 mini and 5800 hardware specifications are almost same other than some irrelevant ones as a physical qwerty etc. even the nand memory space is same 256mb.i see no reason for depriving nokia 5800 users of widget homescreen.please make a serious note of this.

Currently there are no plans to release a version for 5800XM (due to its limited homescreen).
What about the new C6. It has homescreen widgets and a great resemblance to n97 overall. Haven't tried to install bot yet, so I don't now if it works or not.

The only thing nokia is meaning is actually throw your phones in an dustbin and buy an new mobile phone, and after a few months that model will also left behind.
What i mean is that nokia have to show some intrest on updating its older frimware.

It's been over 2 months since I have a custom fw on a Nokia 5800 RM-356. C6-00's v11 ported fw, actually, brought by you know who.
And it's been also over two months since I installed Nokia Bots on it, and I have to say...It's working like a charm. I haven't found yet a single issue. It's awesome. Every single bot is working on my homescreen.
So...my guess is that it works fine on the original C6-00's fw too.

We made a quick test for C6-00 yesterday and everything went fine. Its software seems not to differ that much from N97/N97 Mini. C6-00 was added to supported devices this morning. Thanks for the suggestion.
hey, there's this app called mobots which is quite similar to this. Works with limited function on my n78. Must be a payware cause it's asking for registration.
Hope nokia make some for 3rd editions.

Even a cheap feature phones from competitive players are giving a homescreen widget options, then why cant Nokia? Homescreen widgets are no more a luxury feature. Please try to understand and release Nokia Notifications in whatever the type of implementation you can!

You don't need widgets for all of the options, and you also have a contact bar for the nokia 5800/5530/...
So maybe it's a idea to not support every option for the 5800

Your comment provides no information as to the issues that you have other than "you are unhappy". Frankly, my 5800 has continued to do far more than I ever expected of it or was promised when I bought it. Nokia has continued to provide firmware updates that not only fix some issues but provide enhanced features and performance. Nokia Beta Labs continues to develop apps for the phone as well. Not many companies continue that with a phone that is over 2 years old already & I can't think of a reason that I would need to buy a new phone at this point.
Nokia should include the homescreen widget in the firmware update of nokia x6 and 5800 so it can support this and many other applications yet to come. I suggested this two phones because they have almost same factures with n97 and so wouldn't be much hard.

Brother i support you. It seems android carries their customers to the latest of their versions and Nokia, they just dump you and find people that can spend more and take them to higher ground. I remember when s60v3 was all and all, last two to three years. I'm so dumping nokia the munite this my x6 lost its value in the technology world
Actually you're wrong. Most Android devices can't be updated at all, and you're lucky if the device manufacturer decides to support any new versions. Consider however that the 5800 is now two years old and it is still getting major updates ... What does that tell you?
You'll also find that Nokia is the only manufacturer to offer an evolving software platform (as of new Symbian) which offers customers major feature upgrades for their devices for the foreseeable future ... No-one else dos this. The only reason you don't get that on the 5800 is that it's not possible to add major features to Symbian^1 so late in the devices development cycle; it has to be done at the beginning.

@xyberxy sorry to say that but you will not get nokia bot support for your 5800 becouse 5800 doesn't have homescreen widgets and nokia bots are widgets. you will have to live without nokia bots or get a nokia phone with widget capability. this is all explained on "Compatibility and system requirements" of the main page of Nokia Bots. regards

From my experience with the code-base, when a new model is released its code is forked from whatever is available on the code-base at the time. Since the version of Symbian that runs widgets is forked separately from the version that can't, it's not possible to transfer the newer code back to devices like the 5800.
It is possible to port newer firmware (for ex C6-00) to Nokia 5800, many have done that successfully including me, it is just Nokia don't want to waste resources on old ditched Series 60 V5.

Not all S60v5 phones are supported, due to differences in homescreen implementations. Nokia N97/N97 Mini are supported, Nokia 5800 is not.

first step is to check firmware availability on your country's nokia webpage. if it's available update via nokia software updater or nokia suite.

Hey, I have the Nokia 5800 XM.. I bought it new last week, but everytime I try to update the firmware to the new V60.0.003, it just says "No Updates Available" can anyone help me?? the current version on my 5800XM is 50.0.005 version date is 23-03-2010. will appreciate any help!! thanks

Unfortunately new firmware are not available globally at the same time. And for some branded phones it might never come. It depends on the product-code.
The reason for this is that a provider might have tampered quite a lot with the original firmware. So it would require a bit of working and testing to redo with the new firmware. And often providers are reluctant to do so for elderly models.
Until a few months ago, you could check at Nokias update site if an update existed for a specific product code - this page has unfortunately been destroyed.
So all you can do is wait. And if you have a branded phone, contact the provider. The more pressure from the users, the more likely it is to be prioritized...
