Comment: To answer your question by PatFischer for Suggestion: Add voice features to application

You ask how does a person blind find the app? With no audio feedback, a person can remember the location by some tactile pattern on the area, by it, etc.

I am sighted and have worked with AT for the Blind since 1989 and so I have thousands of customers. Everyone of them I know loves the iPhone and although it has it's imperfections most customers appreciate the access.

When you build accessibility into an operating system you have an advantage much like the Apple OS versus Windows. Although Windows 7 has improved magnifier, narrator and the voice recognition, the world of windows is playing catch up to apple in regards to built in accessibility. On the other side, Windows has awesome add-on products to accommodate a person with a disability.

I appreciate Nokia working on making accessibility become built in, as opposed to an add-on like Talks and Mobile speak. I appreciate the add on, but the future is in having everything built in, OCR, ebook reader, TTS, voice rec. While accessibility products are special today, someday we all will talk to the box and the box will talk to use no matter what hardware is crunching the binary language.

Comment: As someone who is sighted by PatFischer for Discussion: Braille Reader

As someone who is sighted that is becoming certified in braille I find this as something to play with, but for reading braille I have a different take....

My guess would be that this is a teaser for feedback, when the actual product will have 2-way communication to a Bluetooth braille display. I think the idea of a braille display with braille input will become more popular as a user can provide input and output on their mobile phone, netbook, laptop, desktop, imac, and whatever else that processes the binary language.

Comment: I totally agree with by israc for Discussion: ridiculous! Made without thinking.

I totally agree with Lulu-Ann. As shown in the video, you still need to perform some "visual" steps to get the application started. It means that in order to do so, if you are visually impaired or blind, you still need to have a screen reader software in place. Why would you bother waisting time concentrating on the vibrations while that same screen reader can read your text messages? Probably a good solution for a deafblind user, but still needs a different approach to be fully functional.

It is indeed a total contradiction, being this a forum to discuss accessibilty, that a blind or parcially sighted user can't register to contribute with a comment because the registration form is not accessible! Funny, huh?

I agree Lulu-Ann, -made without thinking.

Discussion: ridiculous! Made without thinking. by Lulu-Ann

the braille reader is ridiculously slow to handle.
if your are not deaf and blind, you will surely rather use a screenreader to handle your phone.
Nuance Talks runs fine on many Nokia Symbian OS phones.

Nokia should rather concentrate on screenreader accessibility.

That the accessibility topic is not important for Nokia is obvious.
I can write here, because I can see.
Blind people fail to register because of the strange letters that have to be entered - there is no way to *hear* them instead of reading.

Blind people fail to register because of the strange letters that have to be entered - there is no way to *hear* them instead of reading.

Also Nokia Maps is getting worse to use with a screenreadre with each version!

If you want to improve, do the obvious things first.

Until then we are worried about the sanity or hearing of finnish blind person association who gave their name to promote this useless application... It takes you at least 3 minutes to read an sms with this tool...

It's just embarrassing for nokia, nothing else.

If you want to make blind persons a favor, produce cellphones that you can use with *any* headphone, also with ones that go with hearing devices and that are comfy for all ears.

Deaf blind persons will demand for a braille interface, because reading is much faster then.

And, by the way, next time you develop a feature for the blind, make a podcast, not a video.
It is not explained without looking at the video, how the application works.
As I said - made without thinking.

Discussion: Step in the wrong direction by zkrisher

I'm very happy to see Nokia making an effort to add accessibility features to it's phones.

I use an N95 with code factory's Mobile Speak and Mobile Magnifier software.

While I can see the Braille Reader helping death-blind people, I don't think it's a good solution for the blind or visually impaired.

The concept seems to boil down to sending 6 dot Morse-Code via vibration.
I find it hard to imagine the amount of concentration and time it'll take to read text this way.

Why not simply use a TTS to read the message aloud?
Many Nokia phones already have this capability.

Many Nokia phones already have this capability.
If you happen not to wish your messages to be spoken aloud in public, use headphones.

I don't mean to be rude or put you down, the death-blind community is rejoicing, but for the blind and visually impaired this is a step in the wrong direction.

Text to Speech requires no special training in braille, or the high concentration level required to follow Morse-Code.
I don't want to say the A word here, but the iPhone 3G S seems to have a much more constructive approach to making touch screens accessible.

Suggestion: In new phones it can read using TTS and be a Braille Writter by ivanfm

I have an N97, and the SMS internal reader using TTS works very nice.
The APP shuold read also using the same TTS.

Also the APP can be changed be a Braille Writer, dividing the entire screen in 6 big dots. Will be better if each user can configure with the help of a people who can see and train to use the application.
This should help more the visually imparied.

I'm a teacher and last semester some of my studants implemented an SMS Braille Writer using the standard phone keyboard and worked very nice.

I downloaded the Braille Reader onto my Xpress Music 5800 which I mainly use for music. I don't know if the download is buggy but I didn't get any tactile vibrations when using the braille buttons. It is a good thing I can still see what is on the screen otherwise there is nothing (if you can't see) for a reference position. How would (as a blind person) use the menu? If you desire to market a device for the visually impaired and blind customers you will need to build a specific device for that market, imho. For those that are blind already a teacher would be required. For those of us that have not reached that blind state yet we would be able to teach ourselves.

All the smartphones mentioned above were purchased this year just trying to find a smartphone that I can use with my vision. Now I am excited about the N900 and those similar to come. I just hope Maemo5 will be more intuitive than the S60 V5 o/s. It is indeed powerful but too bad it isn't customizable like my desktop and laptop running Windows XP. I hate the iphone since they lock it up and put apps I don't need and will never use, (and I can't get rid of). Let me have a smartphone/computer that I can put what icons "I" want on the home screen and have only the programs/apps I use. That and a High Definition display just like my Nokia 5800 with a larger screen and virtual buttons I can see to use then you will have a starter for the visually impaired. Personally I don't need a whole lot of apps or programs due to my vision (or lack thereof) probably way less than a person with healthy eyes would need or want. Our needs will always be less than someone else's wants, lol.

This may sound like complaining but it isn't. I truly believe Nokia has come onto something in attempting to address people such as myself and those that are already blind. We have been neglected in this world of mobile phone/computing. It does my heart good to see Nokia take the lead. The iphone fits my hand nicely, I wouldn't mind more bulk if it was more powerful and more computer like. The screen size is about right on the iphone. If it had the screen resolution of the 5800 Xpress Music, a great camera, a few common apps, connectivity, and great sound quality, OH YEAH!! Again very nice try Nokia, I know you can do it and Thank You for trying.

Discussion: What a great idea! by funkychunky

It seems like an application that should have been there all along. Since the dawn of mobile devices the blind and visually impared have been somewhat left out when it comes to messaging, as it has previously relied on sight (with the exception of the nokia message reader, which in the history of the mobile device is still a pretty new feature).

I can see this tool being useful for those learning braille also as it includes the learning in a frequently used pass time and means of communication.

Well done Nokia!!
