This worked on an N82.

You will need a file manager that allows you to view system directories and files.

NEW LIST INSTRUCTIONS
01. In Custom Dictionary go to Options > Export and save your word list to a directory on your phone;
02. Copy your exported word list from your phone to your computer;
03. Open the list on your computer;
04. Edit the list and save in the same format (XML) and with the same extension (.word_list);
05. Copy the new word list file back to the directory on your phone;
06. Move the file c:\predic\[YOUR FILE].dat on your phone to a backup directory;
07. Open Custom Dictionary, there should be an empty list;
08. Go to Options > Import list and select your new word list file from your phone directory;
09. The new word list should have been imported and you should be able it view it;
10. Close and reopen Custom Dictionary to check everything is hunky dory.

NOTE
- If you mess things up you can always go back and use the old .dat file in your backup directory.
- If you're happy and Custom Dictionary is running okay, you can delete the old .dat file later if you wish.

Nokia says Custom Dictionary it's not compatible with the N82. It does work but has limited functionality and editing words is a hit and miss affair. It won't save words that are less than three characters and it can only import lower-case a~z characters, and that's it, no special characters or numbers. Because of these problems you will need to import your own cleaned-up list eventually.

Thanks for this post. I have a N81 8GB. I am extremely frustrated over the lack of instructions how to install the custom dictionary application. Can you tell me how to copy the application to the phone and then how to find it so I can install it?

Thanks for the post. I finally figured how to install the Custom Dictionary software. I followed your instructions and managed to export my word list. Wow, what a lot of bad words I had in there! I edited the file and sent it back to the phone, no problem. But I could not find the c:\predic.dat file you mentioned so I am unable to remove the original word list. If I import my revised list it only seems to append to the original list, not replace it.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I presume you are using Nokia File Manager therefore you will not see your system files and directories as they are hidden. As I mentioned in my first post, you need to use a file manager that can see system files. X-plore is okay and it's free (Ovi store) but it has an annoying nag screen on start up. You can also investigate HelloOX2 (www.helloox2.com) which comes with a file manager (optional install) called MODO, you can use that to view your system files.

Once you can see your (hidden) system files:
01. Go to C:\Predic and delete the .dat file;
02. Open Nokia Dictionary, it should be empty;
03. From Options import your word list.

The new word list should have been imported and you should be able it view it. When you close the Nokia Dictionary it will create a new .dat file in C:\Predic. Check it's there with your file manager.

If you're happy with your dictionary then back it up. You will probably need to import it again. I think the number of words in the list is also limited to about 30 words, but not sure yet.

You can create a list with a text editor, it should just contain lower case a~z characters and nothing else, and must be in the correct XML list format. Export a list from Nokia Dictionary and edit that one if you're not sure. The file must have a .word_list extension (.word_list), so name it something like: MyCustDic.word_list or whatever on you memory card.

Okay, thanks for taking the time to reply and clarify for this dumb user. I did get the x-plore browser and managed to delete the word list. I screwed up importing a new list but only had about 30 words I needed added to the personal word list so I just took ten minutes and typed them in. Problem solved.

I will mention that my "bad" word list had over 200 words in it so the personal dictionary is certainly not limited to 30 words.

Glad to be of help and I think you might be right about the number of words, mine has gone up to 33 and has some garbage in there now, the app has a mind of its own.

A WORD OF CAUTION
I have noticed on a couple of occasions now, that when I have imported a word list the Nokia Custom Dictionary app seems to wipe clean and destroy the backup word list file!?! When I try to use the same file again to import the list – which was okay – it won’t work and nothing is imported. When I view the back-up file on my computer in a text editor it’s full of NULLs or unreadable machine code, in other words, empty. It doesn’t contain my ‘clean’ word list in XML list format, so I can only assume that the Nokia Custom Dictionary app has wiped/corrupted the file when it read it - nice one!

BACK-UP
My advice is to back-up your ‘clean’ word list in a separate directory on your phone and on your computer. I have two copies on my phone in separate directories, one for importing and one just as a back-up which I can copy over if I need it, the Nokia Custom Dictionary app never touches it. I also have a ‘master’ copy on my computer just in case, after all, it’s Nokia we’re talking about here, which is why my next phone will be Android driven!

just tried using x-plore. Used x-plore to delete the dat file but the dictionary list is still full of my words :/ then tried deleting the whole predic folder but the words are still there. Just cant get rid of them :/ i have a nokia 5320
