If I delete images in E71 gallery, they will still show as local images when I open NIE. I will have to delete the already deleted items one by one to get rid of them.
Could use a REFRESH function to update NIE.
does NIE make local duplicates of the images in my handset? Where are these stored?

The behaviour you experience is caused by the fact that Nokia Image Exchange uses pre-generrated thumbnails to show your images. If the originals are removed manually or with other programs such as the default gallery the thumbnails remain in Nokia Image Exchange.
Thumbnails can be removed by deleting _PAlbTN directories from the memory card. This has a side effect that it causes Nokia Image Exchange to re-generate the thumbnails which may cause some slowdowns while this thumbnail generation is in progress. Alternatively, you can delete the images with Nokia Image Exchange manually one by one.

It would be nice if we could use the pencil button for selecting multiple images in Search mode. It would make deleting a large number of images a lot easier.
i too experienced this problem and found the solution as stated abov...deleting the PAlbTN...
But I do believe this is is a real bug as deleting from NIE deletes from the gallery.
There are some images that I dont want to be uploaded and when i hit delete in NIE it deletes from the
gallery as well. On the other hand there are images in the gallery that i want to delete but they still appear in NIE.
I think that these functions should not be intertwined with each other

16GB some of us have is a LOT of space to have a LOT of images. Some of them are never intended to be viewed in a gallery/image app.
I have IN and OUT folders on my SD. Anything I may send or receive trough WLAN is there. I sometimes FTP my WEB site from my phone when I am on the road. For this reason, using the gallery app is endless browsing of page elements such as graphic buttons and arrows.
This is a problem that affects all my Nokia image and music apps. It is going to get worse as we learn new ways to use our phones, and more information - much of which is no way related to our phones - is being stored in them.
Shamefully MS-DOS as this may sound, I would like to see applications using dedicated folders. Unless someone has a better solutions.

BTW, I remember that this was a HUGE annoyance when I first started using S60. Although I now sort-of understand what the logic is, it still does not make sense: Deleting a file yields different results depending on where I delete it. If I delete a podcast in file manager, it still shows in gallery; if I delete it in gallery, it will be gone until the next podcast update re-loads it. MUST delete it in podcast application! On the other hand, MUST play it in gallery application else I will have no access to equalizer.
A mainstream user does NOT want to be bothered with having to learn these absurd (and undocumented) rules just to listen to Britney or post a photo.
Quite annoying bug this. I have just doen a major clean-up of photos on memory card (some apps couldn't handle loads of images). However the deleted photos remain in NIE! Even after deleting the thumbnails they remain in the NIE database (c:\system\apps\ImageExchange\imex.db) and now show as 'black holes' in the NIE gallery.
Besides this issue I really like this application! It's quite good, especially the time bar view. Although I would like an option to browse by directoy as well.
