Image Exchange is great Image viewing utility. I have been using image Exchange instead of the gallery for a while now. I am using it on N82 firmware v30.0.019. I didn't try the back up and uploading feature because I don' need it. I back up all my photos on my PC, where they belong. Lots of people say we don't need this program when we've got built in gallery. Well that is true, but gallery is too slow and it is just ugly! On my phone it takes 7 seconds to load Gallery regardless of how many pictures I have on my phone. Afterwords if I am pressing left or right too fast I have to wait some more for it to load pictures. Zooming takes ages 5 more seconds of my life.
Image Exchange on the other hand starts instantaneously.Currently i have 685 5.0Mpx pictures stored on my phone and the App is just flying. Not only that but zooming in, and out and browsing thought the pictures looks beautiful. I don't understand how can the built in gallery be so slow. something went very very wrong there.
So here are some pros and cons for using Image Exchange vs. standard gallery
Pros:
1. Its lightning fast, start up is instantaneous
2. It has zooming, rotating and browsing animations that look great
3. Zooming in is done using the + volume key. In the built in gallery you have to press - volume key to zoom in. That just doesn't make sense.
4. Screen auto rotations works great. Even if it is switched off in the phone settings it is used on the phone and that makes perfect sense. I keep the phone auto rotation switched off because I don't like when it rotates my menus but I like it in the gallery.
5. when you zoom out to its maximum you have the thumbnail view it looks great. In the built in gallery pictures are aligned to some strange U shape. What is that? It is not nice nor functional.
cons:
1. I have to go to the menu to start the Image exchange. When I press the gallery button the old and slow Built in gallery opens up. You should really let the users choose if they want to use this button or the Silver multimedia button to start the Image Exchange fast.
2. There is no way to send a picture via blue tooth using image Exchange. This is a big minus!
3. In the old gallery you could select the multiple files using the # key. It should put a check on that picture. You could select few pictures and then you could delete/send/move them somewhere.
4. Maybe you should implement some editing features form the gallery so it would became completely obsolete.
5 maybe you should switch left and right navigation keys when browsing photos. I am reading from left to right so it makes sense to me that left is past and right is present. Currently when I pres right I go back in time. That is not logical for me.
6. Sometimes when I zoom in to the picture I get the thin line on the bottom and on the right of the screen that does not fit to the picture. it is usually lighter color than the rest of the picture like it is from some other part of it.
I really hope that in the future some of these features will be implemented and I hope that Image gallery wont loose any of he existing features. I hope the program stays fast and nice looking because these are its most important qualities! i am giving 4 stars out of five because the program is still in development.
