My experience is that the program (which is fantastic) creates an always online connection which is draining the battery.
If this is not a bug, how about having an option to connect on a schedule eg once every hour or every four hours etc to upload and download new images?

I had not really witnessed this issue until I upgraded to the latest release a few days ago and then had a chance to start up teh latest release for the first time yesterday. IT KILLED MY BATTERY. . . When I came to get up this morning my battery had deceased (IT WAS AN EX-BATTERY). When I replaced batteries for a fresh one I noticed that the phone instantly connected to my Wi-Fi network, so disconnected and it automatically re-connected. Initially I was worried that some sort of trojan or hack had occured bu then tried a few things. It appears that even when Image Exchange is (elegedly) not on it actually is and still tries to synchronise yuor images. There is no way to stiop this other than hunting the process down in the hidden processes with a task manager or letting it finish synchronising all of you images and then never takeing or downloading another one. I realise that the Dev Team are trying something new here and I'm all for that but it would be nice for the synchronisation adn data usage to be limited to whennthe softwaer admits to being on. Either that or I need to start taking a portable generator with me everywhere to keep my phone powered up.

God knows how many times have i made the request to change the way NIE deals with the image uploads.
For one, i don't want to upload all the images.
And secondly, as you mentioned, we really don't need a full time connection. I had made this very request when NIE was launched for the first time in the blog.

thanks guys for the excellent feedback.
First, there is an easy way to control the connection. Just switch the client to offline-mode by selecting "Go offline" from the options menu. You can switch it back when you want to re-establish the connection to upload your images etc.
In our experience the online mode really drains the battery when you first take the application into use and have lots of images to upload. After that the effect on battery life shouldn't be more than 10-20% max in normal conditions. You may get worse performance if the network coverage is bad and the client has to re-establish the connection often. Being connected doesn't use radio as such, it is the re-connections that do.
But, yes, we agree that having more control about what to upload and when is needed. We are working on these options, it just will take still some time! I hope you can manage with the "Go offline", "Go online" options in the mean time.

@tpakkala I had Image Exchange in offline mode and the exitted the sofwtare and it was still trying to connect. When I braught up hte phone's active apps screen Image Exchange was not there, but if I disconnected my GPRS and Wi-Fi it would reconnect my Wi-Fi (This is the primary access point in Image Exchange) if I then disconnected it the GPRS data connection would open (My secondary access point in Image Exchange) and shortly after re-start my Wi-Fi again. The only way I could stop this was to short press teh power button and take my phone into "Offline Mode" i.e. "flight mode" and wuold then receive a Wi-Fi acces request which I would deny. I proved this was Image Exchange by changing my Primary and Secondary Access Points in Image Exchange and whatching the data connections which I was fighting against change. Remember Image Exchange was set to offline. This issue never appeared in the previous issue of Image Exchange, just the latest. The only resaon it is not still trying to connect is that it has synchonised all the images on my phone.

@tpakkala But surely there is no point in keeping the connection alive while idling? That, in my opinion is a complete waste of battery life. The only time a connection is needed is when there are pictures in the "outbox" or you are browsing online pictures. The rest of the time is a waste of time. I like the application to disconnect after all the tasks are completed. It could automagically connect if a new picture is taken or you check out the latest online pictures. Even if it only affects your battery life by 20% I still think that is 20% wasted. Feels more like 100%-200% on my phone though, depending on how much I move around.
@mbrett: Thanks for the report, I send your description of the problem to our developers. This is not the way it should work in offline mode.
@mece: There is a good reason why we are keeping the connection open, although it may not yet be apparent to many of our early users yet. Keeping the connection open allows us to push data from the server to the client practically in real-time. We use this for pushing shared and published images (low-res thumbnail version of about 10 kbytes each) from your contacts under "People"-menu (this happens when you have friends that have your phone number in their phonebooks also using Image Exchange for sharing and publishing).
Push capabilities are also used for informing about new comments to your images (these can be found under "Comments"-menu. And also if your edit the title and description of your images on our Web-site, we push these changes automatically to the client application as well.
Hope this makes sense. We expect to use the push capabilities even more in the future.

The above link gives a battery life of an E71 of upto 20 days on standby. Whilst I realise this is not a real world time, it isn't really acceptable to take 20% of that away - thats 4 days - over half a week. And using wlan it would have a far far greater impact on the battery.
