I have N97 with software V11.0.021. Sam problem was on 10 version.
Seems that when I sync contacts with Nokia PC suite, or SyncML (1.2), it will double persons Firstnames to surnamefild.
So "John, Smith" will be "John, Jonh Smith" in contact list.

THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT PLACE FOR THIS THREAD AS NOKIA MESSAGING DOES NOT SYNC CONTACTS WITH ANYTHING.
But I'll try and help you. . . .
What are you synchronising to? - Outlook etc.
I have seen this issue before and had to change some of the field names in outlook to sort it.
Have you synchronised the from your PC to a previous Nokia phone?
What I would suggest is to back up you PC Contacts and then one way sync from your phone to your PC and check what fields it creates on your PC.

Uh, yeah. Sorry, I skiped that "Messagin" part of forum name. It's so hard to find bug report place for Nokia.
Issue is same, if I create new contact with PCSuite, or sync from our mail server. Server is not outlook (it's mdaemon what works well with E90 and E75.) Problem is only with N97 (I haven't tried any other 5th phone)
The best place to post this is over at . . .

I do still thinkn it is something in the Naming conventions
i.e.
"Name" vs "First Name" vs "Last Name" vs "Full Name"
One option would be exporting to csv. That way you could check what the namimg conventions are.
Suonds to me like it is using something like:
"First Name", "Full Name"
