On my 5800, it keeps connecting though phone's data-plan. Is this a bug or something else ?

You can change the accespoint in the menu
Having the same problem, even if i use the wi-fi connection on the browser then use Messaging (with default as the connection setting) I'm still getting a network connection
I second that. There seems to be no wifi support. If I change the accesspoint to wifi for a particular email account (while in email setup), then the setup fails connecting to the mail server (after trying it a couple of times).
Also, it is very user unfriendly that the email settings are not saved, if setup was not able to connect to the mail server. This makes it very difficult to try to get the thing working.
p.s.
I don't have any access points other than wifi configured, and the email setup is not able to finish. It tries to "connect" to the email server forever.
I am not sure Wi Fi is the issue. One of my friend got it to work easily on Wi Fi. There is something that is amiss here that we are not able to figure out. It sure is the connection to the internet. One more thing is can you see the sms message that is used for establishing the connection? I cannot see the message in the inbox while my friend was able to.
The application seems to need at least one non-wifi access point configured in the device. I have wifi access points only, and I cannot go beyon email setup.
Hi
I am using wifi on mine fine - When I logged in on the device I did not have a sim card in and it seems to work perfectly on wifi.
Open Nokia Messaging
Click on Options-> Tools-> Settings-> General-> Service info-> Access point
Select your WiFi as default Access Point.
Hope you like it :)
I cannot setup messaging without any connection. I do not use network data plans at all. I only use wifi. I am trying to setup Messaging right now in a place without wifi, and I cannot even open the app. It closes since there is no network connection.
It should be able to work offline whenever I want.

I second that. The app should be able to work offline. I, too, have no data plans or access points other than wlan.
I used "Default" as my access point, which should have chosen from my "Internet" destination. My WiFi access points are first priority and it still chose the packet data access point instead.
In nokia messaging settings, I have set access point as to use wifi. It worked for couple of times. But it keeps gets switched to use data plane. THere is some bug here.
Just like we have it for any other application on 5800, i get a choice to select an access point which also displays available WiFi connections...i think something similar would be the best option.
I never used a 5800 but normally when using the connection on nokia it select the data plan what we have to do is to delete all the accesspoint from the phone and then it will ask to select an available accesspoint
may be this was the problem try give feed back
thanks
I'm having the same issue, I have a WLAN connection running but it keep opening a 3g one to download, i have taken the connection option out of the 'internet' destination & told it to use that & it STILL does it, it seems to be ignoring the setting & insisting on that connection type, effectively rendering it useless if you want to save on you data plan & download fast.
I have the same problem in my x6-00, although i can live without nokia messaging, have all my email accounts configured and use them manually with wifi.
However, the problem is that the lonely planet and michelin guides in the ovi maps use nokia messaging when you click on an email link from there, and it therefore does not work, it says "Email account hasn't been set up yet".
Also, the nokia search does not work correctly if I use nokia messaging results, because it is not set up. This is very annoying because nokia search is great and I would like to use it to seach emails in my folders. If I don't look at search results from NM I can see results from messages (sms) and from Notes, but as soon as I try to look inside the NM results, immediately the Notes and sms messages results become blank.
Another irritating thing about nokia email is that it gets all the email messages from IMAP servers, including those that have been marked for deletion or moved to a junk folder. There should be an option to ignore those.
