Suggestions for Nokia Messaging (FB only)

Let me start off by saying I like this a hell of a lot better than the default widget.
From the get go on the Home screen it *feel* and looks like Facebook. On my N97. Top marks for giving that first impression. Given the early state it is in, I couldn't quite try out more features that I normally use in Facebook but I'd thought I'd list down a couple of things as a suggestion:

1. Update Status - Goes to my wall feed? My friends think I'm nuts. Shouldn't it update *the* status?

2. Offline mode - Would be nice if there's a little option to disconnect from the network like the email client does, not a real want item.

3. Change profile photo - If we can upload a photo can we use this to set our profile picture?

4. Installation location - Can we have the option to select a location other than C:\ ?

5. Responsiveness of the application while typing - Can it be a little more responsive? Felt a little laggy when typing things in the app.

6. Facebook chat/friend status - Most other FB apps don't have this (AFAIK). Possible to have this?

That's all for now, probably post a little more when a new release comes in.

18/12/2009 - Update
I saw on OVI that a update to Nokia Messaging was available. I downloaded it and I'm pretty pleased with it so far:

1. Clean interface - It's a lot neater and organized. The front widget is pretty nice as well, you can scroll down to your feed using it. Not sure how you guys squeezed a scroll bar there :D

2. Nice to see the installation destination is selectable.

3. Did not feel sluggish while typing. I supposed this could be chalked to the fact that it isn't sitting on 'C:\' anymore.

One issue though, occasionally I get a 'Client couldn't connect to gateway'. Rebooting usually fixes it - if this helps anyone.

My thanks to the team, it's nice to know the improvements are rolling in :P

I agree with point 4 (Installation location). It would be great to install the app elsewhere on the phone, such as mass storage or memory card.

Hi Pengtuck,

I can't comment on all of those issues right now but I can comment on a few of them.

#2. Currently the client pretty much stays in offline mode unless you interact with it. There is no automatic update of items and no "push" support.

#3. I can't offer you any promises on this one but I will bring this up with the Social Messaging team.

#4. We are definitely working on this and I agree with you that installing only to the C drive is rather restrictive. Believe it or not it is actually harder than you might think to get everything working properly on the E drive, but the Social Messaging developers are working hard to fix this.Also

#5. I have not actually seen responsiveness problems when typing. Where are you typing when you have this problem? (New email? Update status?)
Also could you verify that you are using 12.x firmware?

Hi! Just to comment on point #1 (Pengtuck): Facebook is supposed to publish ALL status updates to your wall, that is not an issue with the app, that's actually a Facebook feature.

a faster interface would help. With iconic feedback. Make it look plain jane like facebook if there's even a tiny difference in refresh time.

should definitely make it easier for those who swear against the stylus.

And since this is after all beta, i wont go into missing features. But i have to say make it simple and hassle-free.

Hi Iivo,

Putting the cache and data files on the E drive would be fairly easy, but when we investigated this we ran into a different problem. Our cache of course includes profile pictures downloaded from Facebook. If the pictures are on the C drive in a special directory then the Gallery application does not get cluttered up with all the pictures. The minute we move them to the E drive we start running into issues with the Gallery automatically finding all of our cached photos which ends up cluttering up the Gallery for everyone. We are still looking into solutions for this and I expect that our final release will have this problem resolved, but unfortunately there does not appear to be any quick and easy solution.

Maybe you could rename all cached photo's extensions to something like .jpk, but by copying & renaming the extension to .jpg users get a way to cache photos in gallery.

And Nokia users are used to these sort of workarounds, so no big deal.

Hi nrbrhn,

I spent some time last week looking into ways to get the cache be on the E drive without causing any Gallery issues. I think we now have a solution worked out and once we compare that solution against possible solutions for moving the entire installation to the E drive we can decide where to go from there.

I should note that generally the image cache only takes up 1/4 a megabyte so the improvement in C drive space isn't going to be that significant, but any space saved is a small win in my book.
