I've been using Nokia Messaging - IM on my E71 [300.21.012] to primarily log onto gTalk over Wifi at home.

I've observed fast drain of battery when IM app is being used and esp when run in background. I've tried only closing all others apps in background, however that didn't help much in this matter. This is esp true when compared to using fring app and the battery usage with that app runing in background. I've been using E71 for more than year, so pretty much aware of battery drainage over period of days with my regular usage. I primarily use WiFi to connect to IM through E71 (be it Nokia IM or Fring)

I know this is just observation and seems vague. If I could be pointed to more quantifyable tool for measuring remaining battery charge, maybe I could be more specific in my observation.

Try Nokia Energy Profiler.

And I think I must agree, even with 3g connection the battery drain is apparently faster..

This thread seems to be a bit old. But I observed the same behaviour when I started using it on my N97 mini. The mini itself isn't a frugal device. But anyways there was a very clear difference in the battery life after I started using this messenger. The app otherwise is pretty cool!
