I mean, we have Ovi contacts which is a very nice looking IM application with some unique features. the problem is, its development seems to be taking an age. then Nokia sees fit to produce yet another IM application? why not put all the resources into producing one market leading application rather than two miss matched offerings? the competition such as palringo and slick messenger is already way ahead of nokia, do we really need another IM app to choose from?

There is absolutely no point to this. The client is ugly, not as streamlined as Ovi Chat, and it sucks up more resources. I used it for about an hour and promptly deleted it.
My guess is, Nokia wants to tie chat in with their messaging services in the future so that they can people $ for it.
Nokia, NM isn't really a great mail app, so why take Chat away from the Ovi team and hand it to NM, when they still have lots of work to do with NM?

Hi, this solution will enable you to mobilize multiple IM identities/accounts (Yahoo!, Ovi initially, other IM market leaders will be added in future releases) with one front-end on your device. This is the IM piece of Nokia Messaging which you hopefully already have for email, see email.nokia.com if not. You can login to multiple IM accounts at once, tab between two conversations in the same app, login invisibly (just to see who's on w/o anyone seeing you're on) etc. So you won't need multiple apps for multiple IMs/emails - one Nokia Messaging solution for all your consumer email/IM accounts. Hope this is clear.

Why not just put that functionality into Ovi Chat? In all honesty, it's a much better looking client, it's native, (not crappy java) and it's much more integrated with my contacts and s60 itself. (homescreen status, etc.)
Who thought it would be a good idea to tie in IM with my email? Email is a necessity for most people. IM is not. I don't want my already bloated (resource-hungry) email app becoming even more bloated, just because some misguided suit somewhere thought it'd help the bottom line when Nokia starts charging for NM.
If NM and BETA Chat become a single app, I will stop using NM and look to a different phone manufacturer for my messaging needs.
Ovi Chat was on the right path, integrating IM with your contacts. Who in the world wants IM tied into their messaging client? It makes no sense whatsoever.
We move to OPENSOURCE but then you try to make a propietary IM ?

Make an IM XMPP client, easy, simple, 100% XMPP, and no other IM protocols. Similar like gTalk, easy.
We must force switch to XMPP. Its insane to have multiple IM accounts.

i've tried my best to get my friends to switch to xmpp but failed big time! yahoo and msn talk to one another and that's enough for them. i think the answer is for yahoo and msn to switch to xmpp but that's not going to happen any time soon. i think the xmpp standard does allow for transports to link all the other protocols so we should end up with something good? in the mean time we need a app that seamlessly supports the lot? oh hang on, we already have nimbuzz??

I enforce every corporate tu use xmpp for a lot of reasons, and I always teach the same example:
What happend if you need to call someone in Vodafone, and you must have a contract with Vodafone to call him ?
Or
If you want to chat with Skype, you need to have an Skype account, or Y! or MSN. etc-
Xmpp come to solve this problem and free us.
There are lot of peoples out there using fring, nimbuzz or gtalk. I know many small business, and medium that are using gtalk and nimbuzz.
We always love painless switching, but this one cannot be maked.
