It takes very long for thumbnailing big picture collections. (700 pics in my case)
Make it a faster in thumbnailing pictures, and cancel all thumbnailing that goes out of view (otherwise people will move to other pics because nothing loads, triggering even more thumbnailing, until the thing hangs.)
And then, please just replace the standard one with this on all phones ASAP. :)
