I tried out the photo browser today. First thing, it looks great and I love the way it operates.

However...on my phone I have a LOT of images and that's not going to change. WHY does the photo browser take SO MUCH space up with the thumbnails?

e.g. I have 2677 images. The thumbnail building process only reached about halfway through before I ran through the 400MB of free space. Does it need to take a copy of every image then produce 5 different thumbnails or something?

It needs a rethink for this considering the Gallery, and the Image Exchange application seem to be able to cope without taking this much space.

Thanks. You have an interesting use case with many many pictures. We want to make achieve nice user experience with it.

NPB at the moment needs around 50KB per image for the thumbnail purpose -- regardless of the original picture's resolution. This means roughly 130MB all together in your case. This is peculiar. Could you let us know the phone model you're using?

Its an N95 8GB UK with the v31 firmware.

50KB is still quite a chunk considering my images are mainly 1000x667 and vary between 41KB and 378KB with a total of less than 350MB, all JPG files.

I'm going to reinstall and see if it does it again. Also, the uninstall leaves all the thumbnails behind with no method of removal. A purge option would be nice to have too to purge and either rebuild the thumbnails or purge and uninstall.

Thanks gfindlay. I agree the thumbnail file purging is probably needed. We will see how that can be provided.

OK, I removed ALL thumbnails, reinstalled and waited...and waited...slow slow generation of thumbnails...the phone sat for about 15 or 20 minutes doing nothing...then suddenly thumbnails started appearing...slowly.

So, I watched and waited...finally about 10 hours later, all the thumbnails were generated...apart from 2 which it seems not to like for some reason.

I checked the free space. Started at 434.1MB free, ended at 269.3MB - for about 350MB of images, its taking nearly 200MB for thumbnails. This is not good. This process REALLY needs to be looked at.

I guess the original problem with it taking up more than twice that space was the program picking up other thumbnails from Gallery, etc. and processing them too? That needs to be looked at too.

Does it REALLY need 3 thumbnail images for every picture? In different sizes to the ones that Gallery already creates?
