After my N96 crashed (for reasons not related to Step Counter), when I re-loaded step counter it asked me to 'recover lost workout' (or something similar). Everytime I did this the program failed and just went in to the application Menu.

I have previously commented on this problem. In post 82 on the first blog thread, I wrote
- application crash reported after power on. This happens if you switch off the phone without exiting the Step Counter. I do that just about every time I get on a plane. Even though the error message looks nasty the problem it reports is harmless.
