C-drive Memory Drain with Ovi Contacts on N97

Hi,

I think the ovi contacts app is extremely useful and a great program for instant messaging. However, on my handset i've noticed a problem.

If i set the presence setting to 'show my location' on, whatever the GPS does during this time, is also downloading something onto my c-drive. i've come to this conclusion because i've had to wipe my c-drive twice because the memory went down as low as 225kb from an initial 41.7mb free.

I've turned this feature off and with 2 days now of running without 'show my presence' on, my c-drive is still at 41.7mb.

Can anyone advise what this feature is downloading, more importantly, where so i can delete it for future reference (note that clearing cache, installing all applications to e-drive including txt msgs are already done on a routine basis. None of these affect what i've noticed above) ?

I attempted to send an email to nokia UK but got a patronising silly (standard) email response back. Basically saying they don't have a clue.

If anyone else has experienced this, let me know what you've done to fix this problem, or if the ovi tech team can advise if this is a problem and if it can be fixed in later versions/updates.

Do you know it is downloading and not just generating historical data that it is not deleting?

During the C: drive memory drain did you try opening "Web", selecting "Options", then "Clear privacy data" and selecting "All". This can clear other application's data out of the cache as well as Web.

I have seen a smimlar issue with Nokia Messaging, where it's housekeeping seems quite poor.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know is the honest answer. Regarding clearing privacy data, yes i did that (do that everyday) but even when i cleared the cache and all privacy data, the c-drive size didn't budge. But as i've said above, since i've turned off the feature to "show my location" the size of my c-drive is (today) 41.6mb.

So my theory still remains that if that "show my location" feature is turned on, the GPS (and/or data) is being downloaded somewhere on the c-drive and it remains there even after all privacy data is removed (suggesting this data is not stored in the system/cache folder or dmgr folder)

Long long time ago.

Running OVI Maps, Nokia Messgaing, Quickoffice 6, Adobe Lite. All only install on C: drive. I'm nearer 23MB. I've heard that we won't be getting the Latest Maps version in the v20 FW either which means I'll be loosing that chunk of C: drive again. Hopefully Quickoffice 6 will be in v20 FW as at least that will save me c.10MB.

i think latest version which has been updated just now should fix problems. Before installing new could you go to your "landmark" application and edit just some landmark --> after this you should have free C memory? anyway like i said latest version for N97 which is avaliable now should fix this problem

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you're suggesting. Are you suggesting i delete some landmarks? How does that link into my theory about what GPS is downloading?

Can you explain? Also, firmware v2 has not arrived just yet in the UK so i cannot comment on if it has 'fixed' any issues i've reported

If you go to tha application page there is a new version of OVI Contacts. Still trying to find out what exacly has changed.

You should note that if you download the client file from Betalabs you will get a c.2MB file containing all languages (I believe), whereas if you follow the link to the OVI COntacts site and download from there via your phone you will get a regionn specific version (I believe). I got a c.0.6MB UK English version. I installed the UK English version as I assumed this would take less C: drive space as I don't need the other languages.

I assume that some of the locational data from OVI Contacts has been stored in teh Locations cache which can not be accessed directcly. The editing of a landmark may be resulting in a refresh of the Landmarks cache.

So is there a cache folder for landmarks that is not in system/cache or the dmgr folder but elsewhere? when you say cannot be accessed directly, is it possible with the y-browser (dr jukka) file manager? The ovi contacts i've installed is the one that comes via the phones software update program within applications. i wonder if they're both the same or the uk .06mb version you've used is newer?

Unless the version listed within Software Update has been updated this version is newer. The version from Software Update in the N97 is c.2MB if I remember correctly, more like the version presently available from the Betalabs download link. For the smaller file you need to follow the link to the OVI Contacts website via your mobile phone ( http://contacts.ovi.com/dist/app ).

With regard to the possibility of a landmarks cache. The Symbian OS is built such that there are many hidden folders and files on your phone that can only be accessed by the end user if they hack the phone. This has been the case since teh invernt of the Symbian OS many years ago. I had a hidden file/folder issue with Sofwtare Update which I was only able to solve by Hard Resetting my phone (formatting the C: drive and re-installing and setting up everything). In this case I believe tommi is offering you a less drastic option.

i recently installed the latest contacts and has also concluded that leaving landmark sharing on eats up the c drive. I'm not sure the problem is fixed in new version as i left sharing off as i dont wanna end up reseting my phone yet another time just now . My version is 1.20.9 --- N95 31.0.0.17 | N97 12.0.0.24 ---
