Where I realy need this? Can somebody explain to me? Can I use this like all the time in baground messenger or something?

Yes, why not?
the only thing u should do is to press hide button and ovi contacts will remain active in background.

But what i want to know is why it looks like it isn't running when hidden, holding down the menu key doesn't show it running and there's no blue ring on its icon in the menu. I find this very annoying?

We're running in the phonebook process, so you'll be seeing the standard Contacts app in the task switcher.

thanks kristian, i know its running in the phonebook process but when i click hide, the app appears to be no longer running at all, not even contacts appear under the task switcher.. if ii was unsure if i'd closed the app, the only way i can check it's running is to open it, then if it was already closed i have to close it? seems a bit odd to me? just holding down the menu key to see whats running seems like a good fool proof way of knowing what's running and what isn't?
