Nokia chat and Ovi Contacts are almost the same. But, is it what the users are expecting?. There is a number of chat programs that are absolutely great, but this one, that sould be packed with every nokia device, should be at the very least EXCELLENT. With almost 0 bugs and with astonishing features. Don't you think?.

Well i think despite the work that has been done so far, there are a number of missing features "Contacts on Ovi" should have in the next releases.

By the way, the email client and service is a good example of an excellent development. Please apply the same principles here Nokia!!

I will list some features i will love in the product.

* Contact grouping.
* File sending. This is a very important feature for business users, and also for non business users that like to send files...
* Photo capture and sending (as you can do with palringo for example).
* Make voice clips easier to capture, sending and listening. I've used this feature with agile messenger and palringo, and i think that they have nailed it...
* Make it "Always On Line". It could be as you did with the email client, where the user can set when they want to be receiving emails. That would be great.
* SMS sending to offline contacts (asked to the user first, of course).
* More sounds for the alerts.

Also, I kown you can use PSI as a client for the PC, but i think it would be a HUGE marketing tool to have an Ovi Contacts / Nokia IM client for Windows/Mac... that let the user chat from the PC without getting disconnected from the phone (I repeat i know it can be done with PSI, but only IT geeks like me do that). It would turn the eyes of many users to "Contacts on OVI" against RIM's "BB messenger".

File sending is really important in my opinion too, photo capturing also fits in nicely with that.

I'll need to give ago to Agile messenger to see what you mean about the niftier voice clips. Thanks for the hint.

SMS sending to offline contacts (asked to the user first, of course) -- has been at the top of the requests lately, and for a reason. We'll need to seriously spend some time thinking about this for sure. We do support sending IM's to offline buddies though.. but it doesn't quite answer the same need.

Keep contacts' message history. Also, keep it in plain text format, so it could be opened from other apps (text editors, for instance). It also can be configured to be saved for a period of time or a maximum memory usage..., you choose it :D

Also, let the user copy past messages right from the app. It is critical for business users (as my self) to document conversations that happened over the chat.

Part of this feature is available with IM+ (messages history).

P.D.: Sorry if I ask too much, but i've used a lot of IM clients, on nokia and blackberry handsets (IM+, Agile, Palringo, Nimbuzz, e-buddy, gizmo for s60, MSN Messenger, Fring.....), I really like Contacts On Ovi because is simple to use.

Even i liked the basic premise of CoO. You have got the start alright, now before adding the features, the primary motive should be the bug fixes with the service.
Once the service reaches the stage of stability, even i would like to see Photo / File transfer. The others can come later on according to the resources and allocations for this project ;)

Another thing I miss on e-series handsets is the flashing light when a new message arrives. It's not critical, but is very useful, specially when you are away from the phone.

Once again, the flashing light works in the latest email client of nokia messaging.

I think there needs to be tighter integration with the existing phone contacts.

The perfect situation (and I understand its not totally straight forward) would be a single contact list that does everything. After highlight a contact it should show their picture, online status and location ANd have the option to call, sms, chat, email.

It seems to me that contacts on ovi, as it stands, is just a tab that has been "tacked on" to the contacts app

- I definitley agree with the others in that instead of being a send to offline IM, that an SMS option is given.
- Contacts grouping with the default address book as well
- ability to group online contacts by location (since there's Nokia Maps 3 integration now) and then send mass messages to groups in that
- widget that would integrate with Nokia Maps 3 widget on a webpage that woudl enable PC-based users to IM and see location

i think there needs a option "always online". If we lost the gprs signal for moments, it reconnects again without user intervention.

I always thinks that im online bue look the phone and is offline =S because with GPRS disconnects alone in a few minutes

1) TRANSPORTS! and service discovery - basically, if you want to play XMPP do it properly

2) Integration with phone book. Two contacts lists, nein danke! It should churn through the address book with suitable regexes and import everyone who has a relevant user id, then ask if you want to invite the others.

3) You could back it up online

4) And use either the online or device contacts data as a source in other contacts apps, using XMPP pubsub to sync them all

5) You could also do something fun with the call log

6) But until you get the import and export processes sorted...

With channels, there's a problem in maintaining them. To fulfill the legislative requirements, we should have chat monitoring and administrators in place. We're too small team to do that.

I Gave it a second taught. How about opening a discuss channel in the forum where beta lab users will decide on their own will to exchange contacts so we can in real time test the application, and discuss other beta labs applications via Ovi Contacts Client.

What do you think?
I dont mind opening up the topic in the forum.

A reply "quote" feature.
As in need to quote a msg, click on it, than just continue typing my entry and enter.
This can be beneficial at times so not be lost in the chat, save time repeating an entry an a big save in an example a conference chat.
