I think it would be awesome to be able to chat with your Nokia Owners friends for free. I mean, without the obligation of the an internet connection, like today. I suggest to create a real community of Nokia Devices Owners, where you can allow to chat for free.

In any case, making ovi contacts chat (xmpp) free would involve your network operator not chaging you for connecting to ovi... I don't know if operators will agree :)

the other way around, would be bringing back the functionality from nokia sensor to ovi contacts, so we could locally chat through Bluetooth, but that seems a bit too much of a big change to me.
You need to connect the handsets somehow. If you need to be within bluetooth range to be able to chat, the chat is kind of pointless. You might as well talk since you are in the same room.
guys, if the main idea is not using the internet, then I see 2 ways around:
1.- SMSs, which are expensive because YOU pay for them, and are also quie slow as compared to the internet itself
2.- Bluetooth -- does anybody remember the "nokia sensor" proximity-based chat program? :)
While I'd really like to see sensor come back and be available for s60r3fp1 and newer devices (last time I had it working was on a quite old 6620), I don't think that funcitonaluty would be any easy to add to ovi contacts -- first of all, think of authentication; how could you be sure someone is who he/she says he/she is (unless on login you registered your BT address, but then, you still need the internet to check for that registration when you want to know if "jane doe" talking to you on bluetooth is really jane doe and not someone else.
Maybe someone else may have a better idea on this... :)
