How to compete with Blackberry Messenger?

I'm so envious of BB Messenger and BB users, cause they can keep in touch all the time through BB Messenger will all their friends, and in a country like mine, 7 out of 10 of my acquaintances use Blackberrys...

Whats so good about this BB phones?

Well, for starters, BB ships all their phones with a native IM app and with a unique ID, so they all can just turn on their phones and start chatting,

Nokia Users have a disadvantage here, cause we MUST download Ovi Contacts, its not available for all phones, and some of its newer versions are not available for fp1 (1.09) and fp2 (1.2) phones, only s60v5 phones have 1.5...

So Nokia doesn't update...

Ovi contacts doesn't stand a chance with BB Messenger,

BB users can create Chat Groups, for instance, If u work in a office, and someone creates a group for your office, you all can stay in touch with your coworkers through that group, a feature Ovi contacts lacks...

BB users can send pictures and files with ovi contacts... We can't.

I have an n82 v31, and sometimes, the Ovi contacts app closes by itself, its a slow app (1.09, cant update to a newer), sometimes it logs it self out, and it doesn't log back in; and it doesnt saves the chat history, Thats not a problem for BB users...

My recommendation for Nokia:

1st, ship all newer phones with Ovi Contacts and with a default Ovi Contacts ID, and enable users to create a portable ID if they want to...

2nd Update all phones(Yes, all of them, even the lower ends phones) and make that newer firmwares have Ovi Contacts by Default with the features of the 1st point

3rd Show new messages with a pop up, just like new SMS are shown.

4th Please make a faster and lighter app.

5th Nokia should make it so that at least 50% of Nokia phone users have Ovi Contacts by the 3rd quarter of 2010. They should make this available for all users either with a default Ovi Contacts ID or "Ovi Messenger ID" as i would call it to make it more appealing. Why should they do this? I read somewhere that by the third quarter of 2009, nokia has sold 108 million units, and they were number 1followed by Samsung and LG. Blackberry hasnt come close to this, but... If we had a scenario where BB messenger users were outnumbered by Ovi Messsenger Users, being the second compatible with google talk, (available for all phones through 3rd party apps and available for Blackberry through its own native Google Talk app) Everyone would start ditching BBs for nokia phones, instead of what is going on in my country (everyone is ditching their phones for a blackberry because it has BB messenger).

Even I consider BB a lower quality phone, but u gotta give them credit for what they are doing with their BB messenger...

Everyone around me wants a BB cause it has a IM app that keep them in touch with everybody...

Im sorry if my post hurts the ego of the Nokia Programmers, but in order to compete with the best IM mobile app in the market, you must learn from it,

i read somewhere that @kristian hasn't tried it yet, well he should, hell, all the programming team should... learn from it, then, try to make something better, and make it work for everyone, even lower end phones!

Ah yes, ship all phones with it, and make it standard for everyone in newer firmwares.

Yes, i use Ovi Contacts, but in order to stay in touch with all my friends, i have to use Nimbuzz to stay in touch with them through MSN, and Facebook Im, with drains my battery way faster than just using Ovi Contacts would. This is a pain in the ass cause i have to take my charger along with me all the time, BB battery's last way lot more.

BB users only uses their BB messenger cause the vast majority of their MSN contacts and Facebook friends have Blackberry, at least in my country, don't know about yours...

I'm still using Nokia cause my phone has a better camera, and Blackberry's cameras are, lets face it, crap...

But the day will come when Blackberry ships a 5MP camera phone, and that day, if u don't step up, you will have, at least, one less user... (Yeah I'm talking about myself)

@luis , have you tried Nokia Messaging IM? Right now its only available for QWERTY Eseries phones like E72, E71, E63 and E75. But that can do almost all BB messenger can do. Have you check it?
And always remember with BB you need to pay for special plan from operator , with Nokia you can use any plan as long as it connects to internet.

By the way, Nokia Messaging is a paid service in my country, there is no difference there with BB. Since Nokia Messaging IM is a part of Nokia Messaging i guess we have to pay for it too.

I am still fortunate to have free Nokia Messaging service as No operator has taken it yet in India.
But I guess in your case you dont have much choice. Here i checked it with E63 and it looks great.
On E72 it comes inbuilt with many improvements. I am still not sure why Nokia is not doing much for their messaging/IM capability for Business users. In India i dont think they do any promotions for business users.

I find Nokia's free MFE and Lotus Notes Traveler better than paid middleware of BB. Companies have to pay BB license cost for BB server + per user license fee for BES + per user plan cost to operator.
Better to use WM device or Nokia Eseries. What you think? I guess Nokia needs to hire us for marketing.

I think nokia should DROP the Ovi brand and just call everything NOKIA, as Nokia Mail, Nokia Messenger (Ovi Contacts), Nokia Maps, Nokia Suit (Ovi suit), cause it creates confusion, I've been asking all my friends if they know what Ovi was, and only 2 out 10 knew about it.

Nokia is not campaigning enough with Ovi, what a big mistake, they want to compete without letting people know what they are offering, I'm a geek, i know about Ovi because I was searching for IM alternatives and I stumbled upon the Ovi apps and Beta Labs, there was no advertising that led me to them.

I actually tried some of my BB friends to get them to use Google talk, and some of them told me: "what for? its too much trouble..."

Oh if Nokia only knew...

@Kristian, This may be slightly off-topic for Betalabs forum but what Luis is telling is 1000% true.
OVI brand is not being advertised well at all apart from few things in digital media. Also No real efforts are being made to explain what different services are, how they can help in real useful ways.

I am really surprised by this, Nokia is like just sleeping while others are running away. Else you will be only limited to geeks. Even though I am geek, I would like Nokia/OVI services to be used more by non-geeks also. :). Here in India there have not been single promotion of OVI services. some very very useful like OVI sync, OVI Mail, Sportstracker. They have really great potential.

I hope you can take this message to people who can wake up and do something.I am also ready to help in any way possible.

And they say they take all of our comments in account...

They should now STOP developing for FP2 and retake FP1 phones and level the updates.

Blackberry messenger sends messages with status, ( Sending, Delivered, and if it had been read)

which is really handy to make sure they get the message....

this is very useful for business conversations or even personal ...

Here you can send images and voice notes like bb messenger, I useit and it works great.

It works on BB, Symbian, Macs and PC so, tell your BB friends to install it, so you wont have to use BBmessenger to stay in contact.

BB messenger is handy and widely used, I suspect, because of the large corporate user base. Private users are really riding on the back of that. BB were clever enough to make it work "out of the box."

If Nokia want to create a similar "walled garden" for Nokia users, that would be somewhat convenient, but also deeply annoying - since many of my contacts and friends are NOT Nokia users, rather they are part of the BB "walled garden" or have non Nokia phones (even if they happen to be Symbian based)

Open standards are best and will usually triumph - hence in the PC world the number of clients supporting multiple forms of IM from one client. That's why I won't subscribe to Ovi Contacts as a single IM client.

OVI COntacts is not a "Walled Garden" as such as it is actually a Jabber/XMPP IM application. It is also possible to set-up transports to enable you to communicate with MSN, icq, AIM etc. by using something like psi (PC based IM app) to set them up.

I realise the transports side is not "out of the box", but the Jabber/XMPP side is.

that's not the case now. There are a lot of things which have priority like updating all the phones to one version etc. But your idea is well. Besides that would be a huge implementation and that much time we dont have. we have to raise the ovi contacts user if we want nokia to survive!

i have always been a nokia fan until 3 months ago that my nokia phone was stolen so i bought a blackberry....for the first days is cool,you start to receive a lot of updates( weekly updates)something that doesnt happens with nokia.but even after updating your blackberry you find that its still a CRAAAPPP.nokia its a lot better!!now im back to nokia(with a nokia 5800 i just love it!!!) but also im with the blackberry cuz i miss so badly bb messenger...if you nokia guys improve ovi contacts i swear to god that i will crashhh my bb and i know a lot of guys that will join me.

Luis, i totally agree with you on everything.

Nokia needs to hire more & better developers. They release minor (and mostly useless) updates almost once a year. I'm a software developer myself (with 15+ years of experience) that leads a small group of developers and if we had the response time of nokia developers we would have been fired a long time ago. Maybe that's what Nokia needs to do.

Off-topic: Nokia Messasing for Email was last updated a year ago for v3 FP1 devices (idk about others). I'm the only employee at work that has Nokia + NM for Email, everybody else has BB ..... i'm really considering crossing to the dark side on this.

i so so so agree with this post....if nokia still wanna be the best in this level....then they have to make application just like blackberry messenger...if not....then in next few years...maybe we not gonna use nokia anymore....bcause its doesnt stand a chance to fight with blackberry,,or maybe another brand in the coming year....

I agree with the above post. Nokia is almost doesn't exist here in the U.S. Something like BB Messenger for Nokia would make the brand more appealing to the youth market. BB is doing very well there!

I guess we both come from the same country. I see a "lot of red". If you know what I mean.

And yes, I must say in this side of the world we are facing strange, funny things, like:

1. People stopped asking for your phone number. They will ask for your PIN instead.
2. People won't by a cellphone anymore, they buy a BlackBerry.
3. People agree with BlackBerry devices being not-so-good phones compared to Nokia's, but the "social pressure" and the ease-of-use of the BB messenger weight more when deciding to do a new purchase.

I have been working in the mobile bussiness since 2001, I have been in many countries, inside the operator/carrier as well as in the provider, but always in the network side (not the terminal's). Actually I was "a Nokia guy" for some years, in the "Networks" division until they merged with a competitor. Well, that's another (sad) story I don't want to bring here.

I was there when Apple revealed the iPhone to the public and the very next day I remember Nokia stating in the intranet that the release of the iPhone changed the view of Nokia's mobile bussiness. So I know Nokia must be dealing internally with this issue.

I know, and based on my statement #3, that many people would buy a Nokia phone without considering a BB, if there were open applications out there to allow BB Messenger in Nokia devices. I know there are also some restrictions here:

In the tech side, the APN blackberry.net must be provisioned in the HLR (sorry for the little "techy" talk) for those non-BB based subscriber lines. Which also brings me to a commerciall issue: mobile operators/carriers make profits when selling the "additional" BB service. having an open, internet-based messaging service might mean less profits for them.

That doesn't include the legal agreements that RIM/BlackBerry must sign with say Nokia (or other brands), to allow them to use the BB applications in their devices. I imagine that for sure there must be (or perhaps must have been) a lot of talk on this issue between the 2 companies.

I for one am waiting for Nokia to improve their messaging services. My perception is that a lot of effort has been put into this with Ovi, but still a lot needs to be done thet get equal or better.

I think one advantage of the BB's compared to Nokia, is that all BB devices out there (nowadays) support the BB Messenger application.

IMHO, Nokia should standardize somehow their messaging services. For me it's a lot more difficult to deploy the IM applications in the whole portfolio when having multiple platforms to update. Then, you get the restrictions: "The application is compatible here but not there". "Not available for this one and that one". And so on.

So, for me, it is just a new paradigm to beat. Remember when GSM technology came to the Americas. Short Message Service (SMS) helped the standard (along with the roaming capabilities) to beat TDMA and CDMA based networks, where SMS was not part of the standard. Early TDMA/CDMA phones didn't include the SMS feature, for GSM it was there by default, just for the network operator to integrate a SMSCenter and that was it.

TDMA and CDMA had to adapt themselves to support SMS. And the SMS concept was designed as an additional service, but it became a fast, short, easy way for people to communicate- Later on these designers realized that SMS became something bigger than it was supposed to be.

I think we are living something similar with IM over packet-network based services. I don't agree that you need to come first with the concept to take over the market, but to offer the best idea. The paradigm needs to be broken. If BB offers A, B and C, Nokia should also offer D and E.

Nokia is still the best out there, hands down, for me. But a lot of work needs to be done.

pMessenger the sensational chat application arrives for the Android. pMessenger allows you to chat to other Android users a message with the installed application of free.

You can find now pMessenger on the Android Market in the social category.

Ok now i'm not sure how this works as yet by when i get my hands on my Sisters Droid i'm going to check it out. Droid is Relatively New to the Market if they can i sure you can NOKIA. NB i am not saying that the stuff we are requesting here we will find in the droid but its will be interesting to find out how they connect to each other.

Your saying your hearing us but hearing is one thing action is another, the Ovi Messenger is a great Idea. I've been into Phone for about 6 years now and i'm amazed as to what we can do with them, Nokia is my prefred Phone of choice i also have a blackberry and that is my Preferd Phone of Choice when it comes to messaging and Emails. As u may know Blackberry supports most major IM's they all so have the INFECTIOUS Blackberry messenger, which is a real life saver. Now nokia if u didnt know what the Blackbery messenger does here is it

I can chat with my friends all over the world who has a blackberry
I can send a file e.g a picture, A voice note,,and Conference Chat
I get updates of what my friends and family are doing i can email a contact straight from the (BBM),Groups can be for topical Chats.

why can i be proud of my Nokia Phone and say hey whats your Pin, Special Number, or whatever. Or take it out in the Club and scan Someone's Bar code and look cool(Product Placement) how you think the BBM caught on so fast? i not saying you should be exactly like Blackberry but Nokia please come on you know what we want.

You have Nokia IM for the Qwerty Phones( of which i think Ovi is in), You have to have an agreement with Windows live and Yahoo Etc to be Using their Products this is not such a bad idea one messenger instead of the many. An of me using the limited internal memory please make a relatively efficient small file as i have a nokia 5800 and Windows live alone take up 2mb even tho i save stuff on my memory card the Phone memory is still taken up (just thought i should mention that).However you do it i'm sure we will be satisfied but just understand us and remember we want to be Connected too You came to us and where here to help.

I agree with luis, many others and especially with one member who wrote the comment below, nokia should incorporate something into symbian especially now that it is open source, a lot of people prefer using nokia handsets over blackberrys, nokia should make some kind of agreement with blackberry to use blackberry messenger on nokia handsets, just like they did before with blackberry connect, lets face it nokia messaging is no where near as good as blackberry BES or blackberry BIS, if you cant beat (which nokia never will on messaging and instant messaging) them why not join them.

i agree with luis and many others here, nokia really need to do something or they will lose more customers, i personally don't want to use a blackberry handset but day by day as more of my friends are getting blackberry's and only because of the PIN messenger I'm starting to think i should get one, don't know how much longer i can remain loyal to nokia, I've been a nokia fan since 1999 and love nokias but nokia need to move with the times or their own customers (even the most loyal) will.

i think they should forget ovi contacts and their own IM, instead work with RIM and help create a native or java blackberry app for nokia phones so nokia users can keep their phones, there's no point in making a messenger similar to blackberry's, it would be easier to just have blackberry connect again and add blackberry users or a app where you can add blackberry users and others i.e google, MSN etc etc.

nokia and their developers are just not doing enough, all we keep getting is, "we have some exciting new stuff blah blah blah blah", I'm sorry but as a nokia customer for 11 years i expect a lot more then that and so would many other nokia users, bring back blackberry connect with PIN messenger.

nokia, you will definitely loose a lot of customers to RIM blackberry if you don't take any immediate action.

well done luis for making this aware to nokia who seem to be just interested in other ventures.

another thing i hate about nokia is the whole FP1 and FP2 etc etc, it's ridiculous that you have to change your phone to get a firmware update with added features, where as blackberry os can be updated so much easier, nokia just want you to buy a new phone with the updates.

I have less than a month with my Nokia phone and I already regreat I got it. I had good memories from a Nokia phone I had some years ago so I guessed returning to Nokia with a smartphone would be a great experience, well, after less than a month I already know that unless something extraordinary happens my next phone will be a BlackBerry.

Here on the little island in the Caribbean called Antigua, there is this Blackberry craze. People just want the Blackberry for its BBM service. I have also seen people sell their Nokia phones and purchase a Blackberry. Nokia phones are excellent phones and some Blackberry users can attest to that, but because Nokia do not have that strong social networking as the Blackberry, they are moving to Blackberry.

I am a devoted Nokia user. I have used a Blackberry and didn't like it. Guess it was the interface or something. I just didn't like it at all. I have a Nokia N97, I saw this OVI Chat on it and realized that it sort works like BBM, but the only thing is that all one can do is chat. As a matter of fact, you have to sign up to use OVI chat. Just like BB, and in agreement with a prior post, all Nokia phones with OVI Chat installed should be shipped ready for Out-of-the-box-chat-ready.

Nokia a good phones, no one can deny that, but they need to be more vigilant with their updates, listen to suggestions from the us Nokia users and also watch the market. Compete, be a trend-setter and not a trend-follower. I have been a Nokia user for all I could remember, but the Competition is strong; the iPhone, Android Phones. Nokia can run the market again, just as "pablorubiododdoli" said in a prior post, "NOKIA, WAKEUP!!!!!!!!"

i totally agree with luis. Great job luis, really njoyed reading all the comments.

Just one thing which i feel nobody has covered yet is d fact dat d BB messenger cannot be turned to offline mode. Thus replacing SMS wid pinging in countries where d BB connect plan is not very expensive.

One knows that in countries like India (where i am located) sms is a big portion of the network provider's revenues. and unlimited pinging totally makes sense and saves money for people who sms alot.

imagine u take your phone out from ur pocket for sending a message and send it via bb messenger very well knowing dat ur target contact is online and will recieve the msg immedietly. Unlike msn or gtalk whr d opposite person mayb offline.

Apart from that i totally agree with evry1 above and NOKIA - plz improve on ur speed of development.

Looking forward for better stuff from nokia soon.

One of the issues with Ovi Contacts, is it doesn't always reconnect, so if you have the bad luck to get disconnected you may stay offline (and trying to reconnect?) for the rest of the day as it happens to me here in Santiago, Chile. I know we have a lousy network here, but BB users seems to keep able to send/receive messages even inside the subway train, so there must be something that can be done for enhancing the uptime of the Ovi Contact application. It's great it is based off XMPP, it just needs to be able to keep online once started unless manually disconnected.

But when I read about the "walled garden" I believe that Nokia is not prepared to create a "Walled Garden for Nokia" at the moment.

The strategy should be to create an "open Garden" by releasing an Ovi Contacts for BlackBerry platform, to bring BB users back to Nokia Land...

Yes, I know many BlackBerry owners that reacognize Nokia as a superior phone, but are attached to BlackBerry only for the BBMessenger service.

Let's show that a BlackBerry can communicate back with Nokia through ovi contacts in the "open garden" and surely Nokia will gain back market share in the smartphone field...

If nokia wants to compete with blackberry they have to spent a huge amount of money in marketing for ovi contacts. Ovi Contacts is a nice application but still wont be that succesful as bb messenger. how will all of my friends get to know about ovi contacts?

the whole process for ovi is not userfriendly. imagine i recommend ovi contacts. E.g: Hey buddy there is a new nokia application for your nokia phone.it connects nearly all the nokia devices so we can chat instantly.

but first you have to register to ovi, get an ovi account and another email adress to use this nice services.

thats way too complicated. i just tried ovi contacts. the application is nice but i deleted it because its useless for me. still using nimbuzz to stay in touch with all of my friends. i think the key for nokia will be to connect all the nokia devices with social communities and especially skype. so copy nimbuzz call it Nokia Messenger add ovi contacts to it and sell it. a lot of my friends dont know about nimbuzz. nokia should use this oportunity! then start a marketing campaign about nokia connecting people with nokia messenger. why just use ovi contacts? to copy blackberry style?

nokia is going the right way...but there is a lot to do!instead of using the device to social comunity approach they should do it the other way. From social comunity to device approach!

if nokia wants to make ovi contacts popular, nokia needs to embed the ovi contacts with another popular application from nokia.. for example, embed ovi contacts with ovi maps... since ovi maps is so popular, everyone who downloads ovi maps will get ovi contacts.. this would jack up the popularity of OVI Contacts..

and if nokia decide to do so, i'd recommend them to make ovi contacts as solid as possible before embeding

could not read everything, but connection issue can be solved on E71 with smartconnect. Check it out.

I think there will be better messaging via the new microsoft partnership. Also, it is very important to have possible messenger ovi contact, email, everything in one application and not many. Many is boring and one app is very exciting!

Please Nokia. Don't intro anything until you have a good idea of what the plan is. Better employ your messaging minds to work as one team and not several beta version testing teams. Make customer support in europe and not in asia. Asian have no idea about customer support.

hhassan30 - BB Messenger - in Canada we have to pay an extra $20 or so to have connection with the BB server. I do not believe that it goes via internet but instead with the cellular service. That is why there is the extra cost. And, because it's on their own server, BB's, then it does not go through any company or cellular provider's server, so you can talk bad about your boss without him knowing.

I agree with Luis. Nokia is acting square minded while BB is exploiting the market due to their extensive advertising, not done by themselves but their own users. Their users encourage other to join because everyone wants to be "connected". Doesn't matter the charges of service. In my country this service is expensive but everyone do whatever to have it, and everyone wants it. In the opposite, Nokia did bad changing the name to OVI. People doesn't know what Ovi is. Myself didn't know until I installed Ovi suite due to constant failures in connection to the phone with PC Suite. Then installed Ovi and started to see what ovi is until I understood. I'm an all life Nokia user, for ten years, I like Nokia phones but since 2008 started seeing that Nokia software doesn't work well. The phones are a bit buggy and slow and mid-range phone lacks fast graphic processing so they have good graphics but slow. I have a 5800 right now and I am very happy with it, I can do more with my phone than BB users I know can with their phones, But I'm very disappointed with Ovi software. In Ovi contacts I appear all time Offline (WHY??). No matter what I do, I'm always offline to others. That is BAD, VERY BAD. Do more advertising, everyone programmer and employee of Nokia should have a BB, thus yourselves will get very angry and start making the things good, AND AWAKE NOW!!! Or you will be the last brand in the list the next year!!.

maybe if nokia make more commercials abaut ovi contacts, and if they talk with the phone companies for sell the phone only with a date plan, beacuse in my country most of the people have nokia, but they buy a n97 or 5800 and use ther nokia only for sms and calls, they dont know all the apps, in my family we have 9 nokias, 7 5800x and 2 n97, only 4 have ovi contacts and only two have internet data plan in ther phones so only two use ovi contacs. and the same thing is with my friends, everyone is changed ther nokia for bbs, only for the bbmsn

you are right - but doing what you suggest is just 'too hard' for most people. The way to crack the Crackberry problem would be to create a gateway to it from other IMs - or more probaly go on the offensive pointing out that RIM won't let anyone do that. they ride on the back of the security paranoid corporate world. if Nokia were to create & run an equally securfe sericed with a bridge to Blackberry that would change things.

Well... it seems that finally WhatsApp got it right and harnessed a multiplatform messenger system that ONLY connects phones(Chatting on the phone with someone who is sitting on a Full computer messenger is not fun)

De esta manera los usuarios de Blackberry e Iphone pueden disfrutar de estar conectados al instante y sin gastar un centavo. Mientras los usuarios de Nokia tenemos que conformarnos con las versiones móviles de programas como el msn o nimbuzz.

My cousin keeps begging me to get a BB as we sms a lot and he works a 1000 km away, telling how cool it is to have one and about the messenger feature it has. I keep saying I won't buy one but I'll admit that I like the BB messenger and 4 out of the 12 of my colleagues at the bank where I work have BB and one of them told me she stays in touch with all her family members in her country and can just ask them or anyone of them something with a click of a button.
I really like my C7 and don't want to get a BB but the awesome chatting feature and peer pressure are really making me rethink my decision.
