I agree with some of your post, but not all of it. Yes OVI Contacts does need to be extended to enable cross platform communications. I agree with this, but some of your other statements are those of opinion and not fact.

The other applications available via the Betalabs site have their own merit. Nokia has stong links with music sponsoring events around the world and providing the Nokia/OVI Music Store. This is why they provide Comes with Music and Gig Finder. When it come to Image Exchange, OVI Suite (linked to Share on OVI) and Image Space these are all to allign with the impressive cameras provided on many Nokia handsets.

Here and Now partially develeoped into one of the sub apps of the Newly released Maps 3.03 update. I can go on, but I'll stop there.

As I said initially, I agree that OVI Contacts does need to be expanded on, but the other apps in betalabs have their place too. If you read through the many older posts in the OVI Contacts forums tracking back to it's initial entry to the betlabs you will see that many of your requested changes have been requested many times in the past and have been responded to by the Dev team. The pitty is that during this time these improvements have not made it to the public beta versions. My only hope is that this will happen in the end.

I agree with you on Nokia's lack of direction; I don't like how much effort is being put into many beta's that aren't going anywhere(much less to all Nokia products, not just a select few). I wrote a post once about IM for Nokia which apparently is still running as a JAVA application(explain to me why?); when they should of taken their native Chat application and go from there. However at this point; I've grown accustomed to say the least with Nokia Beta Labs(no point in arguing what you can't change right?). Hopefully with Symbian becoming an open source OS; the user community will make progress where Beta Labs has failed.

Thanks for your post, I somewhat agree with you, but I can't say I agree a lot.

It's true that most of the apps have their place, but, Ovi Contacts have the most potential, and all I'm saying, It's more important to be connected with your friends and family, than knowing where a gig is, or knowing how's the weather (I have snaptu for that).

Image Exchange might seem like a good Idea, but without having the possibility to upload pictures to Facebook, its going nowhere. Why? Cause not everyone has a Nokia, but like 99% of your friends have facebook, and thats where you share your pics, thats where they tagged the pics you upload. Thats where now a days, people share....

Nokia might have strong links with Music, but first, you have to hook your clients with your handsets, and for that, you use what? Music? hell no... I have a mobile phone cause it keeps me connected with the people I know while I'm "mobile".

You might sell me a phone that comes with music, with some music a will listen for a while and its not for every taste or for the taste of every ear... Or... you can sell me a phone that will keep me connected to everyone I know!!

I don't buy a phone to know about the weather, where is a gig (not available for every country where nokia has presence), or to upload pictures to Ovi where now, most of people uploads their pics to facebook using their BB :S

You can make your case about how all those apps have their place, but at the end, you gotta see the bottom line and whats going on the streets, and focus on whats its important.

You buy a phone to keep yourself available and connected, and at the end, people goes to the best at it.

Right now, where Nokia used to excel, Blackberry has gone stronger...

Blackberry has gone out of its original market, the business oriented phones, to the every day consumer.

You just gotta check their currents ads, you know? the adds where they sing "all you need its love"... All you see there is every day people, not just business executives..

Valid points, Luis. Here in Indonesia, BlackBerry adoption is speeding up to an unbelievable rate.

I think for the chatting and everything, Nokia has the Nokia Messaging platform. However, since it's pretty new, there's a lot of hiccups and setbacks. Hopefully they can fix them to deliver smoother experience.

And yes I'm totally agree that Nokia has lost focus over the last few years. However, now there are two things that they should be focusing, the Messaging market and the touchscreen/multimedia market. They shouldn't be talking about games, since iPhone is the real winner there.

At this point, I believe that the best thing nokia can do right now to stop BB advance is to offer to connect BB messenger and Contacts on OVI so people who already have a nokia device dont be tempted to buy a BB just because some freinds did...
That, I believe, would buy some time for Nokia to develope better sharing experience for us facebook users.

I agree but I have a feeling something deeper is going on in the Beta-Labs than anyone is aware, so I dis agree with the Beta labs is wasting its time part.

Sorry the rest is a pretty long post but it is something I have been thinking about for a while.

Most of the applications on Beta Labs seem to be able to integrate into one final experience that we will see later I reckon...
What I 'reckon' will happen in the future is that Ovi Maps, Point and Find, Nokia Image space, the location sharing in OVI contacts and chatting e.t.c. will all combine into one simple program or "phone experience".
I reckon us people on Beta Labs are working on stuff that we won't be able to use will our current phones, and won't show up for a few years but I am happy with that.
E.g. Want to see what is around? Open Ovi maps and click explore all the spatially tagged photos from image space will be there so you can explore your area and work out where you want to go. Point and find stuff could be there also, etc.
Want to see where your friends are? Open Ovi Maps and those that are sharing their location will be seen on the map and click on someone and chat away.
Will that work on current data plans and with current software/hardware? Possibly, but I reckon it will take some more development and go into a future release, probably even on a different operating system to the current Symbian OS.
Most of the stuff could combine with Maps!

However in all this I have 2 requests.
1) I want my contacts list to automatically sync with OVI... This would be great for me because I have to manage fleet phones and the only way to update a contact list with OVI is to wait until the phone comes home, go out and physically grab the phone etc...
Even just for me personally I have OVI web open in the background and then when I want to sync the calender / contacts I got to find the SYNC app on the phone, change the Sync profile from the Maps profile and then Sync it but if I am changing it on the WEB then I obviously want it to go on my phone so it should be automatic.
2) BETTER INTEGRATION for Connecting people!!!! Maybe this is on the roadmap all ready but at the moment most of the OVI stuff is useless to me. I wish I could use it because It is so easy to use from the phone, but for example there is no point having photos on OVI share since no one can see it if they don't have a Nokia account, which I think that none of my friends do. You / Apple / RIM / whoever will never have 100% market share. At least facebook is one product that is universal and not linked to any manufacturer, and other manufacturers have embraced it so it is one way of connecting everybody.

He tenido en los ultimos dos años los telefonos N95, N95-8GB, N82, N85, 5800, N96 u justo ahora el N97, osea un GEEK TOTAL y aunque no cambiaria a Nokia por nada me ha costado mucho trabajo convencer a mis amigos que compren mis otros telefonos por que a la mayoria de las personas no les interesa la diferencia de un telefono de 200 dolares para hablar y mensajear y uno de 700.

Si NOKIA quiere hacerle honores a su slogan CONNECTING PEOPLE deberian de instalar un traductor a la pagina de NOKIA BETA LABS para que todo el mundo pueda subir sus opiniones y lea los comentarios de los demas en su propio idioma.

Yes, I think Nokia should prepare the application itself. Use BB as your parameter competitor.

First of all, the network infrastructure itself. Please cooperate with the telecom provider! Without them, your high tech software / application will be useless.

Secondly, make a real and interesting facebook! Look like a BB minimum.

Thirdly, kindly please integrate BBM and Nokia Chat/Ovi Contact.

I think those will make NOKIA gain the market.

Don't waste your time to develop the hardware product, without improvement of software/application. You will waste your money investment.

I agree that Nokia need to step up their game with OVI Contacts. Recently in my country (Trinidad & Tobago), Blackberry has gained rapid growth because of their BB messenger.

While I recognize that Nokia has done great things for mobile technology and their customers, it keeps getting harder for me to defend Nokia, when Blackberry has such a handy messaging application (as well as a facebook application/widget which my N82 [S60v3,fp1] still does not have).

@luisfelipeperez i believe i have added you on ovi right? :p and i strongly agree with you. and i think nokia should promote ovi contacts as a competitor for blackberry messenger. i believe there are more and more nokia user compared to blackberry user. in indonesia blackberry is just a trend. to have a blackberry means you're on the top of the class, you belong to certain community. you know some cellphone vendor even creates qwerty phone because there are so many people "dying" for blackberry but they couldn't afford one. i'm using ovi contacts regularly now and still using web browser (read: opera mobile) to access my facebook and twitter because any 3rd party or nokia's own applications doesn't work well on my phone (nokia 5530 XM), snaptu took soo long to load, twitbreeze won't reload, tweets60 won't scroll down, communities can't do anything, fring can't connect to the net..fml -__- i've downloaded and tried so many applications both nokia's and 3rd party's and i only found ovi contacts that work well but then again, i have no friend on ovi contacts. my family thinks that ovi is complicated so that they refuse to join me but i believe ovi is made to ease users right?

I agree. Also want to point out that in Nigeria where I am from every single person is getting blackberry. In Nigeria there are no free call tariffs and the cost per minute is quite high. Blackberry has given people a way around this problem. They just chat to each other if they want to ask a quick question or arrange a meeting. No one even thinks of buying Nokia phones there. I think this was a huge missed opportunity by Nokia because virtually everyone there already had a Nokia phone to start with. If Nokia had offered a similar service they would have stuck with Nokia and more people would have also bought Nokias. Now people are dumping their Nokias for blackberrys and those that are buying for the first time are getting Blackberry and not even considering Nokia.

On a related point how do I add people to Ovi Chat? Do you do it on your device or is there a software you can download for your pc and then it can pull in all those you know that have ovi by importing from your msn/yahoo/google address book?

for your info, in Indonesia BB now is become "A Must Have Things". i just buy N79 1 month ago with price $345, and almost all my office mate FOOL me, with USD 345 they said I can get BB (which is used by almost 95% my office staff). I do realize that things, but I really dont like BB I like Nokia with its Symbian OS!
but you know what. . . .now I just realize that 95% BB user in my Office really can keep in touch, every night they do conference using their BB messenger, and in the morning they talk about it and I know nothing right??

I think this is the time for Nokia to realize that they should change their way in serve people. Nokia has to pay its dues..., being late at the IM market and push email has it's price.

That's easy. Products have to be online silently, no matter what. It has been said in this forum for a long time now. That's what make BB messenger a good choice. It just works and has the features that people like. All that features are well known by the ovi contacts team, because all of them have also been posted.

The latest version on s60 v5 works a lot better than the previous. It gets disconnected less than previous versions. But what happen with s60v3 and s60v3.1?

So they need to do 2 things.
1.- Close the gap and make the product bullet proof on every network.
2.- Marketing. (They started in Venezuela, with the product still on beta).

As a final note: Since I tried nokia messaging I said that the way it works (silent connection, always online with practicaly no user intervention) should be the ovi contacts way to work.

Así que básicamente deben hacer 2 cosas:
1.- Cerrar la brecha del producto y hacerlo a prueba de balas en cualquier red.
2.- Mercadeo (Comenzado ya en venezuela, estando el producto en beta).

Como nota final: Desde que probé el nokia messaging dije que la forma en que trabaja (conexión silenciosa, practicamente ninguna intervención del usuario), debiera ser la forma de trabajar de contactos ovi...

I fail to see the point in developing the Nokia messaging realm while Ovi contacts gets neglected...maybe it is time to jump ship and get on the iphone bandwagon

hamad300 right about we have to pay to activate BBM, but in Indonesia it only cost IDR 5000 = $ 0.53 per day = $ 16,02/month for full access (browsing, chatting, downloading, push mail etc)or IDR 2000 = $ 0,21 per day = $ 6,43 per month for limited access (chating and BBM only)
with my Nokia I have to pay IDR 3000 = $ 0.32 per MB (not a day)
or subscribe for internet access for IDR 40,000 = $ 4,34 per 40 MB per month and thats why many people move to BB to use its internet service
well thats just a glimpe view about the difference between BB user and Nokia User in Indonesia, thats why many people here move to BB rather than Nokia

I change phones every 6 months (might be in the same company like apple, nokia, sony ericsson...different models) but I think current e71 is my last nokia phone. I don't know which to use, ovi contacts, or nokia messaging IM beta. I don't know which one to startup, ovi suite or pc suite. Backup never consistently works. Since this post is about messaging, I'll just keep this to messaging.

Just pick one and develop it. Make every firmware update have this program installed. I did the firmware upgrade, restored my programs...and it reverted to the old version of whatever was newly installed version from the firmware upgrade....how awesome is that.

It's not that the resolution is bad on any of the phones, it just looks dated and chunky. Compress it a bit...doesn't matter if it's messaging, or e-mail...the ovi contacts looks nice, but man...I'm only able to see 4 contacts at once? It's not like bb messenger is all graphically awesome....but it's threaded, it just works.

I don't mind so much that the home screen looks dated, but make sure you just pick one program and make it work like your job depended on it. If you're going to have these beta labs...when they graduate, make it work right!

Obviously my txting right now is like the same as S40 sold in India somewhere, and most of your phones (30% in the world) is all text based. For the ones that have some nicer phones...do what the chinese do, copy it! (bb messenger) Stop it with more features, and just get the basic, me texting someone else down first! Install it on every phone so I don't have to ask, do you have a ovi account....oh why don't you go to the ovi store and download the program first.

Nokia is leaning to much on proven forfmula's but seems unwilling or unable
to adapt to the changing market. The market is changing fast and you either change with it
or be yesterday's news!

I think i speak for all of us when i say that we are all nokia fans, we just want nokia to be the leading

I think the theme is that us nokia users are always "waiting for that".
S40, S60, S60 FP1/FP2/FP3, Maemo, S3, Meego....how many transformations and how many people are left behind.

N95-N97...how many people got left behind from that? My E71 to E72 (same platform...minor changes yet FP1 & FP2 are completely different...can't use E72 stuff on my E71)...I tried from my mobile phone at Ovi store (didn't work), browsing to http://contacts.ovi.com/dist/app based on the website (nope...said my phone isn't supported), just re-updated my firmware, I can sign on but can't see offline messages.

You know I love nokia...I'm still nostalgic about my 8290, but it's time to move to something that is awesome NOW. If it's nokia...fine. Just get the messaging to work like it should. I don't care at this point some new OS is coming out in 9 months, open sourced (which I won't see anyways till Q4) I can't txt or communicate w/ someone for 9 months! Android went from 1.5-1.6-2.1 in less than 12 months! Iphone release their update every what...less than 1 year? Same phone...updated software.

I have to update my phone to get FP3? to get S3?

I am pleased that alot of people are urging Nokia to be once again competetive against many of its adversaries in the mobile arena. While having to compete with Nokia's own version of messenger, it may not materialize soon. In fact, BB messenger is stronger in the american market and sadly Nokia sucks in this Market. Nokia is yet to gain grounds in this arena, but that has yet to happen still.

I agree that nokia shuld have its own messenger per se, but like what i said; it is not in the stronghold to do so. Case in point; a subscriber MUST have an unlimited data plan to use such feature; in w/c case, in america they have this or the so called Blackerry Plan. And as we all know - Nokia is yet to gain grounds in this market.

Im not sure with the European market, but I am positive that this IS Nokia's stronghold. As for the Asian markets, a number of subscribers mostly use Prepaid services meaning unlimited data plan is out of the question. And without such plan, even BB Messenger is of no use.

But not all is lost though, if Nokia can initiate a new level of messaging instead of copying from others then truly it will be a breakthrough.

I am a Nokia fan all through and through, and I would love to see it Dominate as it did 10 years back. I wonder what happened to the dynamics it once possesed, now it seems as though Nokia is lost and yet to be found.

With maps nokia made a smart move. Also you can see Nokia is trying to catch up with social network integration and online storage. But why do I see so many very young people with blackberry lately? I thought BB used to be for succesfull businessmen & politicians?

Example of not wanting to change:
I loved United...flew them all the time for 10yrs. Liked the fact they were #1 in the world (I'm more geared towards industry leaders I guess). Guess what, I discovered Singapore airlines, Nippon, Southwest, heck even Lufthansa and Virgin. Each one...had younger stewardesses (easy on the eyes), more leg room, wider seats, better food, individual 30+ selection of movies & shows, even ice cream for dessert. I didn't even know there were better choices until I tried it, and it was hard to change my old habits.

Sure everyone else's camera sucked...SEricsson came out w/ one of the first integrated ones. Xenon flash is where it's at. But I don't see any more phones after N82 with Xenon. In fact, I barely see dual LED in the new models. You might think the 2MP on the iphone sucks...but have you compared in avg light to a HTC 3.2MP or 5MP? I think the output is still better at times when you view it on the computer for some odd reason.

I think my days of buying a new phone to get a new feature pack is over (e.g....FP1, FP2, FP3), not talking about new firmware upgrade.

Anyways, just fix the messaging for step 1...and we'll see if you can pull your customers back in 2 years. Cause that's how long the contract is going to be after I get my BB

you know what ,im done with this.i cant keep on waiting for something that is not going to happen.i cant keep on using a gps app that doesnt works well,i cant keep on using a windows live messenger that is not able stay online for more than an hour,i cant keep on having a mess of applications for the same thing.right now i have 3 apps for facebook but none of these work as they should.i have 3 msn clients and they dont work as they should.windows live allways gives me errors when trying to connect with 3g,nimbuzz its so slow,and fring makes me crazy when i turn on the phone with his addvices and all that stuff.skype its an awsome app for texting,is the only one that really connects me with people.ovi contacts connects me with no body...lets face it,no body uses ovi contacts.not all the phones support the app and the few ones that are supported dont share the same features,just tha fancy ones have a support for everything.if you dont have a fancy cellphone you wont be able to receive firmware updates.i have the nokia 5800, this phone has a software update app,i used it until i found how crappie it was.i can bet that now body has been able to update any app with the updater.you have to update your phone by yourself.you have to download again all the apps.while using nokia messaging you have to connect manually to internet and you have to update your mailboxes manually and it always asks for permisions to connect.
With blackberry the story its a little bit different, the phone updates all the apps,it has a proper integration between facebook and the phone.the im apps work well,you if the message was delivered.im getting back my blackberry.i will leave my nokia in the car as a gps and as a music player using the bluetooth connection with the cars audio.....is the only think that works half well.i might get back a nokia in a year,after finishing my bb contract.

yes! I know how you feel! Even my parents and my brother use bb and my mom has 2. All my friends are using one. I felt left out. But I dont want to change my phone to blackberry.

I agree with the topic of the discussion that luisfelipeperez brought up as i am currently in the stage of changing my old nokia to the new one but everyone seems already using the blackberry nowadays. Therefore, i am in the dilemma of whether should i replace my nokia into blackberry... I am one of loyal Nokia User. I have been using nokia devices since the first time i had my first mobile. And i always hope NOKIA can do something to beat up the blackberry market, and become our favourite gadget again... It will be good if i can have a device that can do everything instead of carrying two or more devices in hand, which i find it nuisance.
Let's make our life simpler because Life is complicated enough... ^.^

I'm not too sure if the contacts team can make a version that supports blackberry messenger as I know the bbm requires some sort of pin with the phone. But what would be an option is if ovi contacts could be installed onto blackberry's thus everyones on ovi...but I think that's something that can only happen once the app is perfected for nokias

i saw your post and started thinking about the chance of having something wrong with my phone's hardware or software configuration.so i talked with my carrier about the issues with my nokia device and they gave me a new nokia 5800 navigation edition...what a big difference it has the last firmware update.it seems that my other nokia 5800 had something wrong with all the connections,that was the reason why i was not able to use many apps,not even the bluetooth was working well.now im trying this app called gravity...works pretty well, the connection issues are gone with all my apps.

I'm not really comparing candy bar phones to >3.5" touch screeens. Nokia still makes the best keypad phones. It's the subpare ability to communicate between nokia phones which was frustrating. (hey, it's really something when you can get luisfelipeperez to jump ship after he got some nokia award, myself to jump ship after my first nokia in 1997....people like us don't really want to change, nokia must be doing something wrong)

If I had to make a choice of 1 phone, and over 50% is for business...sure Nokia would be it. But thank goodness, I can use it for personal & business, play some games, grab my news, and chat w/ all my iphone and bb friends. Sure the battery life is sucking a bit, but hey....I enjoy using it. Sitting around waiting in line at checkout, waiting for an appointment, nice to read some kindle books..etc. If you're job is out in the field such as construction, I really wouldn't recommend a iphone in the first place. And since nokia's are so sturdy, I still have my e71...as my backup phone which I'm sure will last years and years.

Now the question is, who has money to buy more than 1 phone. Well, who has the money to go eat out all the time when each meal w/ a partner plus a movie is easily minimum $50 night including tip (more like $65 for me)

It's not that I don't want to give my money to nokia so those executives can get their 6 figure salaries and tell me what great products are coming. It's that apple went from nothing to something in 3 years, android in 2yrs. Nokia makes good stuff, it's just they haven't been awesome lately.

If I were NOKIA MD, I'll hire you on your own term; and at acceptance of the job offer, I'll pay you to deliver a 12hours non-stop lecture to the NOKIA DEV. TEAM.... because wasting time to let you be introduced to them can be mediocritically-contagious. But let me be frank with you: if I were NOKIA, I will also delete this post from public domain. However, I will do so with due consultation from you. So that you see it as a pure market protection strategy and NOT a sign of resistance to change. I personally see it as an intellectual fraud when you take direction from a correction (be it critical or advisery) without acknowledging the source. For a company that wants to grow, NOKIA should have seen that your criticism (as it were) flowed from a passion for their brand's progress. No matter how good you are as a manufacturer, the consumer is better than you in perception.... because, he is the one you are designing a solution (product) for. So he can help you beat a consortium of Android, BB,etc. when given the opportunity to do so.

Dear Nokia, I appreciate your Good Thinking, Good Products... and I really have passion for your growth. I want you to beat BB and the Android Union to the dust. But pls NOTE this: "There are two people who can really tell you the truth about yourself: A-Friend-Who-Really-Loves-You and An-Enemy-Who-Has-Lost-His-Temper.

At the same time nokia replaces malfunctioning CEO's, they don't react to criticism which could make them stronger. Whats wrong with them?
They are suffering under "The Law of the handicap of a headstart", but won't listen to people who suggest a way out of this dilemma.
Nokia: soon you will even lose the emerging markets in which you are still nr. 1. With symbian you have already lost from adroid BB and iphone in the rest of the world.
The only reason i still use nokia is the free navigation.

Of couse I agree with you too. I am a E71 user and everybody around me just uses Blackberry and try to convince me too, but I find Blackberry useless, expensive and totally worse than Nokia. I believe that Nokia is gonna make an attack soon or totally disappear.

I am using the Chat application that comes with nokia itself, and it's not like BBM you just have to check out what's going on there all the time (thank god i don't have to pay for msn subscription) but it must be better than an app that can be used via ovi account. Nokia just did it to do, without paying attention just showing that "yeah we have such an app too"

and... Facebook is the other thing. There's an app in ovi store "facebook for E71/E72" but we cannot download and use that (I downloaded from another website and couldnt use) now in the betalabs I saw that they're working on the app communities, it looks fine (especially for people who complain about this lack of feature) and has twitter too, but it's a beta i don't know how it'll be with full version (paying again? oh come on!)

I don't know, maybe you should work hard nokia, Android, Blackberry and iPhone is taking over the market. When people talk about business phones they just say the names iPhone and blackberry, for me iphone is a toy! Eseries must be a success instead of failure, in the borders of business (out of topic i know)

and for every kind of user, you need to improve Messenger, not some unnecessary stuff.

I came along with it by mistake, downloaded it and unfortunately saw that only one of my friends is using that. I don't know, it's a good app but people prefer BBM as I said :)
