That would be ideal for me as i dont use google talk.
Hey,
This is a difficult item for me to comment. I can totally agree that this would be needed and is requested by lot of our consumers, but honestly, commenting on this is off-limits for me.
What I can tell you is, that there are some "IM bots" that enable certain degree of interworking to other Social Networks, e.g. try FriendFeed IM notifications or Ping.FM IM bot.

Hi Kristian,
Honestly, the fact that you addressed my question is enough. I understand the constraints around corporate strategy, brand, competition and confidentiality, and can simply appreciate the fact that you still took the time to respond to this.
Thanks and regardless of whether or not Nokia Chat becomes interconnected with these other applications, I will still be a strong supporter.
best

Thanks for your support Jamaal.
And let me just emphasize that we want our IM solution to be connected. That's why we build our service on XMPP - which is an open standard for Instant Messaging, that enables interconnecting with other networks using the same protocol by default.

@Jamall. its a XMPP service! It is not interoperable with Facebook and Live Messenger!
So even if these guys want to do that or have plans to do that, i don't think it will be possible :)
I don't know too much about XMPP. Everyone I IM with is on FB, MSN or BB Messenger; none of which are currently compatible.
It's ok though, things may change in the future
It's not true to say XMPP doesn't interoperate with other IM networks. It was designed to do exactly this. The CoO app, being a very standards oriented xmpp client, is capable of doing this right now.
To those willing to chat with people on non-xmpp networks (MSN, ICQ, Yahoo etc.) - this can be done right away, no support from the "Contacts on Ovi" application is necessary for that. XMPP allows so called "transports", which are gateways to other, arbitrary, IM networks. There are a few open for public use out there, google for them. One caveat is that to initially subscribe to such transport you need to log in to your ovi account with a capable XMPP client (e.g. Gajim). After that, you will see e.g. your ICQ buddies as "1234567@icq.publicgateway.net" in your ovi contact list.
Nokia might want to run such gateways on its own xmpp server @ovi.com, and add the "subscribe to a service" functionality to the client application, to make the process more straightforward. But even if it does not do that, it is still possible for the user do do it by him/herself.

Does this require any manual / laborious intervention from the other party? (ie. the MSN user? )

Nope.
But! All of a sudden, this Sunday the transport stopped working for me. My gateway works fine with other (not ovi.com) server, but through the ovi.com server I don't see my ICQ contacts anymore, even through other user agents. Connection to the server exists, I can execute commands, but the icq buddies do not show up in the roster. The messages still pass in both directions.
Does anyone has experiences with ovi contacts adding msn buddies? and which transporter of protocol... is the best to use ovi contacts with msn?
I am seeing more and more IM programs that allows interoperability between YM, MSN, GTalk, FB Chat, and Skype. I would love to see Ovi Contacts to have that feature soon as it is built in tightly to the Contacts on Nokia phone. It is a pity that it sits idle since most of my contacts are on other network which is not currently supported by Ovi Contacts.
@ken80ny:
I use OVI Contacts with XMPP, MSN, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo, but it needs you to set the transports up via something like Psi IM on your PC.

Okay. I have look everywhere how to do this. I have used the above address on the tutorial how to setup CoO to see my yahoo contacts, and I have never got it to work. Am I missing something. Is there a more thorough tutorial that gives exact step by step instructions other than the one listed above? I have tried both Psi and talkonaut from my laptop and on the phone. I have got to the part where the software says "so and so would like to be your friend accapt". I click confirm, but nothing shows up in Ovi contacts. I am totally stumped. Any help would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
