I'm not clear why the publish location feature is restricted to landmarks that you have saved. I would prefer a feature that would allow me to publish my location wherever I happen to be. This would also be more helpful for people wanting to know where I am.

Why would i want to share my landmarks, nor why do i need to publish a landmark to share my location.

Infact, i would also like it to display my location via cell id. It cannot find the location when i am in buildings via GPS.
Agreed - Should be more like 'Friend View' using GPS or Landmark, or Cell Id.

Just the sheer fact that the ratio of (people) being indoor opposed to outdoor is HUGE, where GPS will fail and cell id prevails, not to mention the many added benefits that follow.
one thing to bear in mind is you'll still need a log of cell id's referring to the name you've given a location. displaying the raw cell ID data is no use to anyone! i've used a couple of cell ID based apps and they all required me to teach the location first so on returning, it knows where i am. what would be really handy is if we could assign cell ID's to the maps gps landmarks then we don't have to keep creating new cell ID data bases in the phone! i think i've already mentioned this in one of the maps forums as its more of a mapping feature than an IM problem.

You havn't used and seen Google Maps 3's implementation of this concept, have you?
You don't have to inform the software which place each Cell ID refers too. It displays the location of the towers automatically.
Try it out once.

Yes i have used google maps 3. but how would this work with OC? say for example a friend was logged in on the pc using google talk, what would my ovi contact status say? it cannot display a map pointing to my location, it would have to be textual. i see in months or more likely years to come, Nokia maps, nokia friend view and ovi contacts seamlessly linking up. when a contact logs into maps, if we're online with OC, our location will be displayed, as with google maps 3. then when we click on that contact, it opens an IM window so we can send a message. but this isn't going to happen any time soon. if the product we have could be fine tuned in its pressent form, then it would be a great start. i think we''ll have to put up with user created location names for some time to come but if the cell ID could be implemented in a similar way to apps like minigps, then it'd be a good start.
is this all "cell id" thing what in my n95, Settings, general, positioning shows as "Network Based"? or is it something different?
I once tried this here in chile, and every once in a while NM3 showed I was in the middle of the sea in northern europe (I'm in Chile)
I agree, though, location by cellid should be at least an option - unless I want to send my exact location so my wife can reach me directly, an approximate location using cellid should be enough for most situations... (is it really less battery-hungry? how does it work?)
