dunno whjy i didn't put this yesterday (where are my posts from yesterday anyway?) . how about using cell id for location data? i use minigps everyday for switching profiles when arriving at work. so how about adding this technology into Contacts on Ovi? it'll be better than having the gps running plus non gps handsets can still display a location?

Using our cell ID, also including wifi.
Why go through the hassle of using GPS? To share accurate location, at the cost of battery and privacy.
GPS is wrong and should be placed as an additional feature option & therefore use our cell Position as our primary source of location data.
Reasons as follows.
1. Not all devices have a built in GPS.
2. Costs of A-GPS if used(my guess)
3. Consumes more battery.
4. Most important privacy.
5. Is it really neccesary to know ones pin-point location? I believe 100m-150m(assuming) is more than enough.
6. Knowing ones general where abouts is a greater asset in my opinion rather than specific location in most cases because it is easy to asses the location environment from a general view.
7. Its not a mapping service, its a social service with location "awareness".
I made a similar request in the Maps 3 forum. Like Google Maps, even the Nokia apps should make use of the GSM Cell Towers. Atleast till the time the GPS locks in, we can have an idea of our location, what all are nearby.

To inform you bro, Nokia Maps does use GSM Cell Towers to assist in GPS lock, AFAIK. Hmm or was in it nokia maps 2, i dont remember anymore.
In the case of nokia maps it is a navigational service rather than a mapping out solution as is google maps. GPS is a must for accuracy and safety for driving, we dont want to hit a wall ;)
Although i do agree on the aspect of none navigational use......let me find the right topic to follow, unless u have a link to provide me.

We're actually using the cell ID too. We're using the location that is accessible from the subsystem that provides location info in the products. And if the product supports cell id, we're using it too.
Note, that cell ID still requires data connectivity (for resolving it to a coordinate) and thus may not entirely resolve the problem of battery consumption.
