pop up message when New IM arrives when phone is on the standby screen?

the best thing about the wireless village protocol is the message delivery. having a new IM arrive on the standby screen is fantastic, just one click away from reading it, exactly like receiving a sms or mms. it would be great if ovi chat could have this feature, so far i'm yet to find a IM application to offer this and the wireless village protocol just isn't reliable enough. if this feature was added to ovi chat, i would start the painful job of trying to get my IM friends off Yahoo and MSN chat and onto XMPP. but until then, slick messenger is the number one in my phone.

i think this would attract me more to my symbian device and i would love my n96 more instead of hating it. this idea would be very useful for like im, mail and facebook this would be awesome please guy can you develop a program like this

What phone are you using Rich?
On the N85 (and i presume the FP2 phones), a new icon is displayed at the top of the screen if a chat message is received when CoO is in background!
It is just as you requested!

Alsiadks, I'm using a N95-1.
i do get the speech bubble but it still involves navigating to the app and finding the new message. for this intant mesaging app to be truely INSTANT, it requires a single click to take the user straight to the message. just like reading a text.

better still, if you're unfamiliar with how the built in IM works (maybe because your network has removed the feature) you can check it out working on the link below. the big problem with it is it's just so unreliable. i've never got on with the packetbox server, the mobjab server is better but still very problematic. but they are supposed to support all the IM protocols.
what i really want is the best of contacts on OVi with the best of the built in client.

Couldn't agree with you more - further, the feature you highlighted with the built in IM application also puts the chat message received icon (the balloon) on to the standby screen, same as the message icon for SMS/MMS, and the @ symbol for e-mail.

Well i have not seen first hand as alsiladka describes but can easily understand the reason.

FP2 devices has the advantage of using pop up transitions where this does not apply towards FP1.
Its just the simple facts.

I am not entirely sure i want the standby popups. Might be interfering for me. Am happy with the notifications.
Though i believe the option should be available to the users.

To snowy. Don't FP2 devices handle text and email alerts in exactly the same way as FP1 devices?
To alsiladka, do text alerts cause you a problem? in not sure how this could be? did you see the youtube vid above? F>F to 6mins and 50sec's to see an IM arriving as i would like to have in Ovi contacts.

Hmm i know what you are referring to for nokia native IM app.
Yes If i recall correctly FP1 & FP2 devices present text, email, calls in the exact same way.
In the case of FP2 devices the transitions are not used. To give you you an idea of these transition layer displays is when the device has active standby on at vertical mode. You will notice an outer layer of context overlaying the general active standby(with transparency).

By the way i find that solution to become very annoying for chat thats why i favor a transitions display. Also by the way, i got rid of that feature for SMS by using S60 ticker. Just having something occupying 1/4th of a small display is cumbersome.
In the case of FP1, i do see your point and beta team should look into it.

Concerning Ovi Contacts, i can not speak for it, since i still have not had a chat on it...yup

Text alerts dont cause any problems because they occur just a few times a day, and definitely not repeatedly one after the other.
While i am chatting, i think i am going to keep on receiving messages continously.
And we are going to see the OVI Contacts Active Standby integration soon, So i would prefer an unread messages counter in the Active Standby plugin itself.

I have an E71 and I think I should have the option of setting up OVI contacts as a home screen application to see if someone has sent me an instant message. The small bubble is just too easy to miss. I also think the phone should use the SMS/e-mail tone when someone invites me to a new chat session - if I have the phone in my pocket I never hear the default message tone. The tone is perfect for subsequent messages in the chat, but the 1st one should be louder.

I hope the advantages of fp2 transitions will be used.
Like a nice pop up in standby via transition for a mere seconds and fades away.
It will be annoying to have IM's stacked on top of each other then also including sms/mms/email/missed call.
It will end up something that plagues iphone users (but in our case we can close it away).

I have a 5800, and if not get the pop-up option (option that you hypothetically coud choose on the Ovi Contacts settings) the 5800 could get the middle white blinking button too uh?? =)

well i requested this feature to the nimbuzz dev team around the same time as i posted the first post in this thread and today sees an update to nimbuzz that gives me this very feature on my old and out of date (according to nokia) N95!!
seems the competition are leaving nokia well behind now?
