Review for Ovi Maps 3.0 Beta for mobile

Despite the warnings of compatibility issues i uploaded this to my N96. First use was very glitchy with application starting then quitting eventually app loaded and GPS connected as quickly as Version2. Sync with OVI maps was also glitchy but with a little persistance works perfectly fine. Im happily using the new maps but unfortunately i do not live anywhere with anything to use the 3d locations.
Still would like to see the app have a better trip computer maybe more like the one used in the GPS data application otherwise GOOD WORK, LOVING THE NEW MAPS

Hey,

installed it on my N96 too and faced this problems:
* everytime i start Maps, i do have to align the Map to my route (outside an active navigation)
* Sometimes it just says "Error downloading" for no reason, still downloading maps and so on
* When music is played at the time i use the navigation, it takes long time for the Multimedia Keys to respond to start/stop or play next-buttons. Seems like Maps 3.0 uses a lot of resources of CPU. Sometimes the Music even stops. Also, if I start to listen to the radio over N96 while navigated, the spoken instruction breaks up the radio EVERYTIME, so I got to restart the Radio after almost EVERY command...
* Missing integration of Points of Interest
* Missing localisation (everything English)
* In very rare situations the spoken instruction is WRONG. For instance it tells me to "turn right, then turn right" but the route goes right, then left. After i turned right, it tells me correctly to "turn left". (Maybe its because of the German Language Files?)
* the route calculated by Maps 3.0 is sometimes not correct, even in kinda big cities like Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany. Sometimes the navigation leads me around big streets, even if the map information seems to be right. So when i take the "correct" route, it corrects the calculated route immediately and sometimes tells like 5 minutes less on the expected time. Correction needed?
* The Switch of the different route views (2D, 3D, overview) is not correct. You have to press the left right arrows multiple times to get the 3D-view (while the menu shows that overview is selected? oO)

Some more minor bugs, i can't remember right now (my N96 is at the service station for major software problems ... hope thats not because of Maps3.0... -.-)

All in all it worked great - most of the time =)
Just figured out it is easier to create Orientation Points with Google Maps, save them and then switch into Maps 3.0 to navigate. (Another prob is that Orientation Points are only updated when Maps3.0 gains a restart...)

I installed (without reading the incompatibility warning!) Maps 3.0 in my N96 without problems and yes, I like all the features and only really have one gripe about the application. It crashes out after about 5-10 minutes navigation every time! I'm really looking forward to the next release of the software as I'm about to lose my beloved company issued N95 which I use constantly for the GPS function! (Saving money by combining voice on to my awful Bl**kBe*rry device but that's not really for here!!) Anyway, keep up the good work and let's have that new release. Cheers

a little off topic with the above comments but is there any word on MAPS3 being compatible with 5th edition or is this low priority for now? only i have changed my handset from my N96 after being fed up with constant system crashes and i already miss my MAPS3!

I updated on my N96 without problem...I have not played with it yet becuase it takes so long to download a map area to the phone.

Anyways I did find that after installation, my phone is very slow in running other applications like Roadsync. Anyone else feel that it has slowed down the phone? Never had this problem with 2.0

I Installed today 12.2.2009. It will not run.
This version is supposed to work on N96.
N96 Firmware version is 12.043

looks like I have to do downgrade to 2.0 if I want to use maps on this device.

I've installed the new version of the beta successfully - it works fine. I use the guidance on a daily basis and have had no crashes at all and the little features like the speed warning and the safety camera alert are great. I did have the "not enough memory" warning on the first try but after deleting all my SMS/MMS and e-mail, it installed perfectly next time through and worked with the existing maps data left from the earlier beta install. Just a note to Kee though - is it possible to increase the volume of the safety camera warning "beeps" as I find it difficult to hear them sometimes? Keep up the good work!

I am seeing the same problems. I have the N96 in Portuguese, and I live in Parma, so that might mess up maps somewhat. It shows only in English, and sometimes tells me to turn left when the map shows a right turn. Also, since the streets and traffic in Parma have changed so much in the last year, it sometimes tells me to go in the wrong direction in a one way street, or ignores a roundabout.

I also had it crashing when I got it to plan a stored route, then canceled it and tried to search again. The phone reseted, then maps wouldn't see any satellites until I turned the phone off then on again. That, coupled with my orientation problems led to going 7Km in the wrong direction until I finally got maps to find where it was again.

What I am missing from maps 2.0 - the ability to search for a place, and not a address (like where is the nearest esselunga or lidl supermarket, etc.).

What I wish it had
- the possibility to import garmin or some other "standard" POI and routes.
- the possibility to submit user updates of the roads, speed traps, etc., like some competitors have.
- being able to edit a stored route before planning it

PS: Forgot another problem, but that I also had with maps 2.0 - the map loader doesn't show what maps and voices I already have installed on my N96, even after uploading them.

I've a N96 phone. Maps Updater find it as Nokia N96 but after a while it shows the following error:
"Cannot get enough information about the phone(3).
No update info found for the phone(16). The phone appears not to be supported."

My firmware is:
11.101
customized version (11.101.252.6)

Could you please let me know what's happening?

The update error can be solved simply by re/installing the License Manager!
