Hi Kee,
Welcome back. Long time no see.
Noticed that OVI Maps V3 for N97 dissapeared form the Maps download site, then Maps v2 appeared and now Maps v3 has re-appeared today/yesterday.
Does this mean that the degraded GPS preformance in Maps 3 on the N97 has now beleived to be sorted?
Also was the route cause of the data loss relating to Maps 3 on the N97 identified and sorted too?
Cheers,
mbrett

Hi,
I tried out the Drive feature yesterday and today morning as well. Below is my feedback.
1. The screen painting is quite slow at times even around 500 m behind, though once it is lacking it quickly jumps to the new location.
2. GPS signal goes aways very frequently. It works fine with Track me.
3. Selecting Different route while navigating crashes the application.
4. Unable to get compas working in navigation mode even if it was collaborated before it loses its green colour and doesn't seems to work.
5. Search feature doesn't lets me clear the existing e.g. Pizza or Paris. I assume it wants me to start typing without clearing.
Regards
Gagan
Only Night view is available. No 3D view in navigation.
Navigation works as poorly with this version as it has done with all 3.x versions of Maps.
See my videos about this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UskvyHv4khU&fmt=18
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDMK_nxaKvg&fmt=18
Those are shooted with 3.01 version of Maps, but this new version doesn't work any better at all.
I can confirm that navigation suxx in Nokia Maps v3.0 in my N95. It gets 20% more time then my Garmin Nuvi200 which is 2 years old. Is routing better in Ovi Maps?
First let me state that I have seen other comments that the voice was too precise is stating how soon to the next turn. Instead of 1 mile (or in yards) others stated that the device would say "Turn right in one point four five six four three two miles". I did not have that happen at all using the new beta.
What I did encounter was multiple course recalculations when I came upon freeway intersections. Every time I was around an intersection for major freeways here in Southern California (55 south & 22, 55 south and Interstate 5, south bound interstate 5 and 133, southbound 133 and 73 toll) the phone would recalculate even if I was on the identified course.
Once I was on the 133 south the application continuously recalculated for 4 or 5 miles. Then I got on surface streets and from there the phone recalculated the entire route and there is only one route to take to get to my destination. Had I not been at home I would have gotten into an accident as the application was telling me to turn left when it was obvious that right was the only direction available to turn.
If I tap on the screen when I am in navigation mod,
my screen is changed from 2D to 3D and turn mode screen.
Works like a charm.
I tried navigation today, and had stable satellite signal (50-80%) on maps scale, and never been dropen.
I tried navigation in my 35 years old beatle, so tomorow I test navigation in my new Peugeot with metalic windows on 800 km trip.
When, for example when leaving home and starting drive navigation, you lose wifi signal and get the "wifi connection lost" popup, the map stops updating. You then have to end navigation and restart the route for it to start updating again.
Sometimes when deviating from the suggested route, map update freezes instead of recalculating route.
In addition, you can be driving in a different direction to the one sugested, but the map will stil show you driving the sugegsted route for a period of up to 20-30 seconds (with good GPS signal).
Tried the track me function in drive, but did not seem to do anything useful. This could be that during the 7 minutes that it took to get a GPS fix, the application had forgotten what it was supposed to be doing. Could be that it lost track of the starting point in the distance travelled. Another ueless extra?
RM-505 v 11.0.021
After a couple of good runs with Maps 3.03 todays trip home was nigh on useless with the GPs keeping loosing it's fix in places that the last few runs have had a fix. It is not due to obstructions because the sky is unblocked on this route. The issue seems to be replicating the issues seen with GPS fix in Maps 3.03. Not good.
When I did get GPS fix the vehicle locations was extremely laggy suggesting that it is an issue with the software and not the GPS hardware in my opinion.
I use Nokia Sports Tracker and have not seen this poor GPS fix issue with that software.

Track Me Function
I am assuming that the track me function should leave a dotted line along the route you have taken as it does in the walk mode. If it should show this - then mine is not! However it does align the map to the direction i am travelling and is generally quite accurate without lag unlike the previous version.
Drive Home or Set Destination Lag
When using the above icons to navigate i am still getting a lag of up to 5 seconds from my current position and where maps thinks i am ie i am pulling off of the roundabout but maps thinks i'm about to enter it! Again so far the performance is much better than the previous version and it doesn't occur on every single trip. The satellite count showed at 4-5 or more on all these occasions.
As a side note to this Kee do you think that the new V20 Firmware will improve this (i'm sure you must have access to this for testing purposes). i understand a number of performance improvements are in this update which may help to iron out the problems
I have had problems with the past version mispositioning me by up to 100metres either side of the road i am travelling along with all the recalculations and confusion that goes along with that problem. I will see whether this occurs with the new version and report accordingly however so far it hasn't occurred as far as i can remember - so far.
N97 Version 12.0.024 FW with maps in use 15.46Mb of RAM free
Very excited, I have tried this new version last two days. Total disappointment!
The screen is now very often displaying my position with a delay of few hondred meters.
Regularly (once in 5 minutes) the GPS looses signal - you can see that speed decreses to 0-10 km/h.
Funny: the GPS indicator keeps on showing good signal strength!! Even higher then before (?!) Very very strange!
Is there any hope for N97 users using Nokia Maps?
N97 RM-505, P/C: 0585162, V: 11.0.021
I am using N97 latest FW 12.0.024.x RM-505
Navigation (Map) is badly lagging and FREEZING at the same point. GPS "meter" is maxed. So basically Navigation feature is useless for me at the moment.
I used it for two days and downgrade it to the previous version , the most recent one. I had all the same problems like in the post #2 .Yesterday it just went crazy loosing GPS fix and recalculating continuously. And there is one more thing , it happens in this version and in all versions of maps 3.0, whenever I 'm slowing down or stopping all my favorites icons show up in the right corner . Basically that happens when map zooms in.
nokia n97 RM-507 NAM SW 12.2.024
After selecting drive and following directions for about 3 - 4 minutes, the 3D map display always flips out, zooms out to planet level, and then resets the display to top-down display mode. I find it easier to use 3D mode for driving so I can see where the blue line goes into the distance; any chance for a fix?
(5800 UK Red 21.0.025 firmware)
I haven't had a chance to test the very newest version on this, but I've had very similar problems to D-Iivil above with a 5800 on 21.0.025. After about an hour, the GPS signal becomes unreliable and when I'm on the motorway, Ovi Maps thinks I'm on smaller roads that run near the motorway and constantly recalculates the route.
The behaviour in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UskvyHv4khU (as linked to above) is very similar to the problems I've had.
One other strange bit of behaviour - the compass rose on the screen gets progressively more and more distorted (more oval in shape) after about an hour as it turns to keep your direction of travel 'up' on the screen - this coincides with the problems described above.
I can't find a way to select destination from contacts... even contacts synced with OVI.
Also, I hope you fixed the USA -- United States of America bug in 3.0 and 2.0 where Exchange stored country as United States of America and Nokia expects USA... really annoying, easy to fix bug.
Although, the search is improved, catching up on Google Maps with its ability to find nearby places without the need for all the address fields.
Hi,
I find very easy to switch between 2d,3d and map display.
But, I have a problem with map display.
I test navigation on my 400 Km trip. When I was on half way, I switched to map view. My current possition was near outside of the window. I want to move the map just a little to see it all, but then it was switched to 2D and 3D. I just can't move map (I can only zoom) when I was into map mode.
Hi,
I used navigation on my 400 Km trip (and back).
Current sattelite signall was just fine. Never lost it.
But, current speed was very often unuseble.
I drive at about 130Km/h, and the speed on map's was between 30km/h to 130km/h. Every 20-40 s.
When I switch to program Location, I saw, that speed was calculated often.
so, I think that the bug is not in the Map software. The bug was in GPS receiver.
At that speed the Accuracy was about 100m.
When I connected to external GPS receiver, the problem with speed gone. The Accuracy was about 15m.
You know, Maps v2 was far better than any version 3 of this program..

I love the introduction of Speed Limit and Safety Camera data and the weather etc. I love the new interface in v3.03. These things still ghave issues in places some quite major like the poor GPS, but I think the apps is improving. It's just been tarnished by some of the issues, which I hope will soon be corrected. So I would disagree.

Installed the new version of Maps released today and hoped the GPS might have been one of the improvements. Unluckily I was wrong.
Must say that it seemed OK except for a glitchy start. Got GPS fix very quickly and then lost it again. Then tracked my position well, but after a couple of miles lost GPS fix and when regained within c.5 seconds it lagged and dropped from then on.
Is there anything that can be done to verify of this is an N97 hardware issue, N97 FW issue, OVI Maps issue or some mix of the three. I love the app and the direction it is taking but need it to work.

I have tried the newest version. It behaves much better now - the lag seems to be much smaller.
Unfortunatelly after about 5 minutes driving on a highway, I lost GPS signal and in few seconds later the program was driving on a road along the highway.
So - the same old blues is back...
N97 RM-505, P/C: 0585162, V: 11.0..021
Used the new version of Maps again this morning. This time I used my Nokia LD-4W external BT GPS module. With this unit the satellite bar was almost full pretty much all of the time, but the lag was still there all be it to a lesser degree.
So far I am of the belief that there is some sort of caching issue with the GPS data bottlenecking somewhere between aquisitionn and GUI output. It doesn't apper to be an avaialble RAM or C: drive space issue as these both have free space available. I do wonder if the User forums around the world may have a point about a poor quality GPS antenna not helping. Would be nice to get a response from Nokia on this issue with the N97, but that is for another forum.

My signal keeps dropping for no reason, I can be sat in traffic and while I wait for the traffic lights to change my location could have swaped between 4 roads, each time it swaps the program doing another route recalculation.
In the short distance from my work to my house, I go across a round a bout, and I was being told to take the 3rd exit (which is correct) about a quater of a mile after I had taken the exit.

N97 FW V12.0.024 RM-505
I just got my new N97.as a replacement for the previous one whith has a broken GPS. It comes already with V12 firmware preinstalled and everything works as it should, no dropping, alway accurate position etc...
GPS works fine, spins around a few times in the first few minutes on the trip but after that works fine. Using the latest V3.03.
Biggest problem is that if connect my N97 to my car bluetooth receiver I get no voice navigation over the bluetooth connection and worst of all, also no voice navigation from the phone itself anymore. Total silence. Navigation still works as it should. The phone is working fine over bluetooth as is the music player as I can receive and make calls over the bluetooth connection.
This problem renders the phone as GPS device totally useless in countries where you must have a hands-free set to be able to use the phone in the car. No voice at all when bluetooth is connected, not from the phone or from the receiver. Can this be fixed please soon, without this I can not use the N97 GPS in my car at all. I am sure there are many more people out there that have the same problem.
If I select my home address manually all is working fine. Driving home via "Home Icon" does not work for me. Weird bug indeed. :P
If the battery is low on N97, it will not charge whilst using amp or navigation. As soon as get GPS fix, the phone switches off with low charge. Surely when plugged into a Nokia original car-charger, there should be enough current to power the phone, even if not enough the charge the battery? Phone was useless for entire journey, as refused to charge off the car charger!
Latest attempt at a route took me from Suez to Sharm-el-Sheik. It seems that the route was via Cairo, which is strange as already come from there! Mapping data / poor software makes this application un-usable for serious use. I would not recommend to anyone who is not familiar with area.
I tested guidance on my route to work this morning. I work in the Lynch Wood area, to the west of Peterborough, and I approach from the southwest on the A605, as shown on this map:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=52.554646,-0.299721&spn=0...
All seemed well until I reached the B671 turning on the A605 at Elton. The software was trying to take me on up the A605 and then the A1139, which is a reasonable route. However, it is quicker to take the B671 through Elton, and then along the unclassified road to Chesterton (which is the old route of the A605, so is still a good road). Ovi Maps tried to get me to turn round at first, then recalculated to try to get me to go north to Wansford (!), then south down the A1. Er, no... that's an unnecessary 10-mile detour. So I ignored it and all seemed well again, until I got to Chesterton. It tried to get me to go SOUTH on the A1, to pick up the A1139, even though by now I was less than a mile from where I needed to get to!
I think some improvement needs to be made to the navigation algorithms so these inaccurate detours don't happen.
bugs:
- On some turning points using the driving navigation the map suddenly zooms out to show the earth. Afterwards it zooms in correctly to the right position, but the 3d mode is broken. Only 2d map mode is shown now. Changing the map mode back and forward solves the problem. Looks like a hung up of the 3d mode with a failsafe to 2d mode.
- searching for a location with the search box works fine when I use it the first time after application start up. When I then stop navigation and try to find another location, it never ever finds a location, just says "no entry found". After restarting ovi maps, it works fine again
- since I installed ovi maps 3.x, my phones main menu somtimes do not show a proper menu, but it looks like a broken screen (color lines instead of the menu). this only happens when i lock my touchscreen and try to unlock it (hardware key).
- when I look at the details of a traffic information and use the button "back", it goes back to the map instead of the traffic info list.
- sometimes the actual speed is shown wrong and varying between 0 and the actual speed. After restart of the app, everything is allright again.
maybe no bug, but annoying:
- the location only shows locations that i drove to or that are in my favourites. But I would like to see the locations I searched for the last time, especially when I hit a wrong button and have to fill in the search box again
- when I connect my phone via bluetooth with my cars handsfree set, the driving instruction are not playbacked by the phones loudspeaker anymore. Because my handsfree set also do not playback the voice, I cannot here the instructions anymore. Maybe you can give us a switch to playback the voice guidance by the phones speaker in any case.
- there is no way to save a location as favourite when you found it by location search. Just clicking on the location (or by using an option) to save a location you just found, would be nice
Thanks, go ahead with the developement and bring out as much minor versions as possible :)
the options "zoom in" and "zoom out" are useless or do not works good. I think it is better put on the map screen the + and -

Nokia N97 V12.0.024 RM 505
From the beginning that I bought my N97 I was suffering from the GPS drop-outs. I use the newest Nokia Maps version 7-sep-2009.
Initially I had several GPS drop-outs and the speed going to 0 km/h each 10 minutes (also with the newest version). My phone was placed in a origina Nokia universal holder mounted to the dashboard, relatevely low. Phone positioned vertically in one dimention and with the top part closer to the dashboard in the other. I used the same holder with my old E71 in the past and I seldom had GPS drop-outs.
About a week ago I bought a new holder and attached my phone horizontally under the widsheeld. Since then I have not had even a single case of the GPS loosing signal or speed going to 0 km/h. Few times I moved the phone to the old place and my problems were back.
For completeness - I was not using the car charger at all.
What I suspect is that the GPS antenna of N97 is mounted relatively low on the back of the phone. My old holder was partially covering it. Also I noticed that N97 has a relatively low SAR rating (0,40), which means that its body is sheelding the RF signals in the direction of display (peoples' head) relatively well. This combined with the non exactly vertical position of my phone (see above) was probably resulting is weak GPS reception. I guess my old E71 has the GPS antenna more on the top of the body and that's why I didn't have this problem with E71.

On the N97 the GPS antenna is actually moutned at the top, to the left of the camera (when looking at the phone from the rear). I know this as:
a) I have a copy of the N97 service manuals
b) A number of cunning types have modified the GPS antenna to improve performance (voids warrantee) and posted images and a walkthrough of the mod in a number of user forums accross the net.

My new holder is relatively cheap and not from Nokia (actual name is 'Cellular Line'). It has a thin and relatively small backplate, not covering the place where the N97 GPS antenna is.
@mbrett
I knew where the N97 GPS antenna is. My choice of the holder was motivated by the pictures of the recommended original Nokia holder CR-116, which you can find on Accessories page for N97 on Nokia site. Take a look at them. Note a small gap at the location where the N97 Gps antenna is...

Installed the latest update V3.03 and I now have voice over bluetooth but only when I actually switch on my car audio system and select Bluetooth as input option. Normally when I am not using Maps, I do not have to switch on my car audio system, just have to connect the phone to the system which happens automatically as soon as I am in reach. The phone then works over bluetooth, rings over bluetooth etc without actually having to switch the system on.
Now I have to switch the system on and this limits me to not being able to listen to a CD or the radio since I have to select the Bluetooth connection as input.
Things are getting better, we are almost there now. Can the bluetooth voice be the same way as the ringtone for the phone when I get an incoming call or the incoming sms anouncement? If I am listening to the radio, the radio fades away, the phone rings over the car audio- I pick up on the car system, talk hands-free and hang up on the car system and the radio fades in again. Never even touch the phone.
Looking forward to the next release...
PS. I found out that when I do not have my phone in my car mount in front of the windshield but in my pocket, the GPS has pretty poor performance. All the 'normal' symptons that most people have, occur only to me when I got the phone in my pocket, never when I clip it in the wind-shield mount. GPS is fine, no issues so far. Logged over 7000km on it in navigation mode without major issues.
I would like to report the following two additional problems in the newest version:
* Each voice prompt is missing the first word. For example instead of "Now turn right" I hear "turn right" (I actually use Dutch language prompts so I am missing the word "Nu"). My N97 is connected to the Nokia carkit CK-7W via bluetooth.
* The program hangs completely from time to time. Usually when I change from the previosly calculated route. After that I cannot close it. I must restart the phone.

I live in South Africa and noticed a weird bug today when I was testing the new software.
The software tells me to go right around a circle instead of left.
This is annoying as they installed a number of circles recently.
Maybe a selection of what side of the road you drive?
Using the English voice with guidance while my N97 is connected to the CK-7W, the 'mute' is never released. This problem doesn't occur when I use the regular Dutch voice.
So I'm listening to the radio, Maps wants to give me some instruction and mutes my radio. The instruction is given clearly through the CK-7W speaker. But then the mute is never released.
If I switch to the Dutch language the problem is resolved. I don't even have to disconnect the CK-7W or shutdown any applications.
the maps are like 5-10 seconds out from actual posistion making guidance higly inaccurate. When navigating to a roundabout it tells me take the 2nd exit when I have alraedy done it. Can the timing be changed as its way out? Also I get turn left in 1092 yards 1092 92 92 92 92 92 92 93 yards. Its like the voice is stuck and keeps repeating. Had issues with mapdata dissapearing and couldnot find voice with street guidance but I reinstalled and seems to be there. Seems to lock GPS better. Main problem is the timing for voice guidance and lack of safety cameras.
Yesterday another bug: suddenly after a first turn the program has shown speed of 1100 km/h. After few seconds the speed went back to 800 km/h and then it hanged...

Now my N97 is able to fix the signal in more or less 3-4 minutes without using a internet connection, before it was impossible without the connection. the phone never losed the gps signal, I always on the right point. It is incredible!
I think too to go to a nokia service to check better the antenna connection.

The new interface of OVI Maps 3 is really nice, but to navigation is almost useless.
I've tried it in Madrid, in highways, and the results are much better than with the previous version, but in a travel to Italy this summer I took it as a backup for my in-car navigator. I tested it there and the performance was really poor!
The signal drops now and then, even with a clear sky and plain terrain. The maps seem to be inaccurate (??) and it loses the route when you cross over another road.
Hope it will improve, because now it is wasted money...
Hi Navio1973. Reading your thread, my first thought was ????, but what the heck, nobody could see me doing the same on my phone, and maybe it*s just our mutual despair or woodoo, but now for the first time I can get a GPS fix indoor, and testing on a short trip, my position is accurate and not 200m behind, as before. Also the speed indicator is almost accurate and not flickering, and the route calculation is limited to my own diversions from route. I called my net provider ( 3 in DK ) but they had not heard about this, so maybe I too will send my phone for a servicecheck.
N97, 12.0.026 C01.01.
Using in car navigation. Music playing through aux cable connected to car stereo. If I press the Apps key to task away to the menu, and go to the homescreen to change the music track that is playing and then either long press the Apps key or select maps from the homescreen, the app closes (no error visible or anything), and then I have to open the app and re-select my route.
If you create a folder on the maps.ovi.com and put some favourites in to a specific folder (Weekend away - added in all the places to visit).
Upon opening Maps on N97, V12.0.026, the favourites are synched across, but the folder structure is not. Makes it totally pointless to create these folders on maps.ovi.com.
If you want to add a routepoint, you can only from standard POI's and not choose from map adress or favorites. please fix!
I too have seen (well heard) the defect where it says "in 1.524242345535 miles", but I think the imperial/metric issue goes further. I've also heard "in 330yards", which I'm guessing was originally 300m and has been rounded a bit.
Basic requirement: the program needs to state how far to the next junction at times that match round imperial measurements (1mile, 0.5mile, 300 yards, 200 yards etc) and not just do at the metric points and convert.
Sorry if a bit off topic but....

I always thought it was a Firmware issue (as with early N95 probs) but i have been to a Nokia Care point who have acknowledged that there is a problem and will repair mine. Nokia have apparently modified a pad/sticker that sits behind the camera lens assembly and made it much larger (according to NCP tech) this would seem to correlate with what is said in this article about interference.
Hope this helps explain some of the problems some of you like me have/are having

I have tried to do short runs and long journeys with Maps 3 and found it impossible.
GPS constantly puts me in fields, roads near to my position or looses GPS totally.
All routes are in country areas so no satalite restrictions.
VERY Dissapointed. GOne back to Maps 2 and now this is occationaly skiping route.
Might even look for another system if not sorted soon.

I can confirm navio's bug report ... voice drops out after a call that interrupts voice navigation.

aux cable connecting to car stereo, connected in audio out mode.
I am using the app for 2 / 2.5 hours every day, in conjunction with music in car.
Music playback ongoing
Maps navigation - when the next turn etc is spoken it is spoken over the music (i.e. both are heard)
There is an audio glitch in the music playback at the beginning of the comment from the maps navigation.
This did not happen initially, but now happens on pretty much every time.

Travelling northbound on the M3, between junctions 6 and 4a the application and navigation work fine
Travelling southbound on the M3 between junctions 4a and 6 the application seems to struggle to get a GPS signal, and the car jumps all over the place on the map.
This never happened with SR1.1 Maps.
Since upgrading to 3.03 the voice commands are a lot quieter and I can't turn it up. On the options menu on drive there is a volume icon but touching it has no effect it simply returns to the route map and nothing happens
I'm using Ovi Maps Beta 3.03 on Nokia 5800 XM . The TTS-voice (German) is a lot quieter than the voice w/o TTS . Please could you check it out ?
I had used the Maps 3.03 and noticed that it does not pronounce the street names-I live in California. I downloaded voice with street names UK and it solved the problem-but why not US ??? Also not pronouncing the streets correctly-Las posas: It spells the first 3 letters L-A-S and then pronounces POSAS
Hi,
Thanks for the bug reports. To answer at least some of them (you are really contributing guys - thanks!!!):
- Positiong problems (mainly on the N97) are the major problem of this beta and we are working with full power together with other teams inside the Nokia organisation. We are progressing but it is still not really satisfying
- The low volume is tackled and will be fixed
- Regarding all bugs related to the route planner I have to say that we are not tackling them for this version but it is on the list with high prio for upcoming ones
- Route quality in general is an topic we are constantly working on and processing the feedback from all over the world.
Again, thank you so much for the input you give and even if we are not able to solve all problems in this version we have seen them and I'll make sure they get tackled.
Could we please have a method of deleting the history I don't think many of us want a huge list of visited places in our phones that we can't remove. It could get you into a lot of trouble !
I have a Nokia N96 and the phone regularly reboots I thought it was when I the ovi email service was looking for an email this was not the case, but it seems at random time the phone crashes.
I have upgraded to the latest beta version, I have nearly caused me to crash a number of times, because I am on the motorway and then it crashes and then I have to re-find my location then click drive-to. The software has become very unstable and dangerous to use.
The second problem I have is, when in navigation mode, the GPS beacon goes off screen, then I go in to options and click on my location and some time it does nothing and sometime, it works. Either way I should not have to play with the phone once I am driving, the screen should auto follow
I have made a trip to the mountains of Greece and I faced the following problem consistently. There were many roads which made 180 degree turns to either climb or descend a mountain. When I entered the turn the following sequence happened:
a) the pointer jumped to the exit of the turn, thought I was moving backwards and caused a route recalculation showing me instructions on how to turn
b) When I exited the turn, then it figured out that I was going ok and did another recalculation, this time showing the correct route
If you search "E952/38 ?????????? 350 17 GRC" you will see the problematic area
GPS Reception was not excellent due to the mountain I was climbing.
I found no way to display the altitude during navigation. I was climbing mountains and needed to get info on height.
Is it possible (in general) as Garmin's 60csx model does, to have the three numbers you show during navigation ([Speed] [distance to end of route] [time to end of route]) selectable from a selection of several data fields? Is it possible to show them as a selection box (combo box) where I can click the arrow and select a different field?
For example when driving motorways it may have a sense to show the speed. But on mountains altitude would be a smarter choice. Or display the time to next turn, instead of the total time...
So display three info fields and let the user choose what to display there
I select a point by address, say "Drive to this point" and I enter "Drive mode".
Then I select "Options" "Route points" "Add a new route point" and then I get a list of Hotels,Restaurants,Museums etc... I cannot go to the 'Find address' and add intermediate point.
The title of options may not be 100% accurate since I translated them from Greek to English.
the problem that it is not possible add some points to a route or plan a route is known.

In aplication Maps into my N95, I have some problem: the internet conection is perfectly, but in version 31.0.17 I don't find in this aplication(Maps) the satellite. I try to find the GPS conection in another places in my city; but... nothing. How can I do?
Having an N97 (on my 3rd now and GPS still sucks) would it be possible for the maps app to actually assume you're continuing down the motorway when you have been for several miles rather than assuming you are really doing 70mph down the farm track that runs parallel every few minutes. Also, when it loses the GPS signal (about every 2-3 mins in my experience), how about getting it to assume that you are still driving down the same road rather than acting surprised that you didn't do an emergency stop to wait for it to re-acquire the signal?
Also, when I search for a destination (usually by postcode but not always), it often picks it up one time and then, (after the GPS has crashed which is about every 15 mins) and it is unable to get a gps fix and you have to come out and go back into navigation it is then unable to find the exact same place it found the previous time. I've found a workaround for this as it appears it is because it's 3G data connection has dropped so if you open the web browser to re-establish the connection and then search in maps for the destination again it works fine.
Finally, why the heck does it not keep a record of my history at all?
I set a destination from Favourites and up pops the 3D map ready to go. One minute later a pop-up message interrupts asking if you want to connect online. If no, it craps out of drive mode and puts you in track me mode. Am running on Nokia 5800, and have settings all to work offline, but alas, can't seem to get away from this pop-up.
Track mode does not track your progress, just your posistion.
Would love to know I am doing something wrong and can make a setting adjustment instead of program issue.
the current position covers a big zone of the upside of the map when you use the track me function in landascape mode. you cannot see where you are going. I think it is better that it will be in lowside.

When I use the track me, after some minute the phone go in stand by and the gps too. when I reactived the phone, the position is lost and I have to wait that the signal comes back.
I think that the GPS cannot be in stand by when it is used by an application.

Updated this weekend - Sat 29th Nov 09, but now have issue with speed. Conversion from Km to Miles per Hour is incorrect. Appears to be reversed. With settings in imperial 45 MPH is shown as maximum legal speed on UK motorway (70 KPH). This should be 70 MPH. 30 MPH is shown as maximum permitted speed (50 kph) when it should show 50 MPH.
Nokia E71 V300.21.012
Today I upgraded my Ovi Maps app to version 3.01 09wk44. Previously, I was using an earlier version (when I upgraded, the installer called it 3.01.1) and in this version, I was able to play music using the FM transmitter, while at the same time having turn-by-turn voice navigation instructions coming in over the top of the music. This was also the case with the original Maps software pre-loaded on the phone after purchase.
Now that I have upgraded the Ovi Maps software (to the version noted above), the voice instrucions no longer get played over the FM transmitter. What happens is, the music goes silent on the FM, the voice instruction and the music is played on the phone speakers (or Bluetooth device, if connected), then at the completion of the instruction the music goes back through the FM transmitter again.
To be honest, this feature was far-and-away the most brilliant feature that i have used on this phone. Not because I used this feature more than any of the others, or because it was the most technologically advanced feature - but because it was plainly the best use of a combination of simple features that made each of these features twice a good. Taking this away really damages the usability of the phone while travelling because it is just down-right annoying having these symptoms occur every time a voice instruction is played (which can be 5-10 times per minute, depending on the density of the streets, exits, etc). The only way to make it less annoying is to use only one or the other, rather than both at the same time, which is really not a preferred alternative and eliminates the "brilliance" the features.
I really hope that this was not an intentional change made by Ovi in this update. Such a change would be completely backward and inconceivable from a user's point of view. But then, things like this should definitely be tested by the developers before release. If there is some way - any way - to put this back to the way it was, either in settings, an update, an add-on, anything at all, please let me know or make it better. It's such a shame when software "improvements" result in reduced functionality or usability.
Thanks in advance for reading.

The map constantly rotates when you drive around without guided navigation, which not only distracts you from driving (you need to drive and look and operate the phone), but CONFUSESYOUR ORIENTATION MORE in an unknow place, which is not exactly what you need a navigation system to do for you.
A better way to handle the situation would be to make 5 a toggle switch, to align north/align route.
When using navigation and music player the music slows doowwwnnnnnn! and the navigation lags by some considerable distance.

I'm experiencing up to a 7 - 10 metre lag when using navigation. This equates to leaving the other side of a roundabout when the navigation shows you entering it.
All my maps are downloaded onto memory card and i only have one active widget on the homescreen. I also turn the handset off and on again prior to using maps (to maximise RAM).

Using set destination was near on perfect but I noticed on drive home that when i tried to make a call using the bluetooth headset the phone froze. Using destination it worked fine.
I then had to take battery out to reboot the phone. Then when trying drive home again it froze acouple of more times. But when I stopped navigation the phone knew where it was.
14/12/09 this time when connecting the bluetooth headset it froze again while drive home was running. Also like the first time you could not turn the phone off using the normal button, only by removing the battery.
15/12/09 I turned phone off and back on prior to using drive and the bluetooth and map worked fine, except at the end when disconnecting the bluetooth the phone still thought it was connected.
16/12/09 same as on the 14th Had to remove battery three times to restart the phone. Problem started when I tried to make a call.
Attempt one turned headset on while maps running, second time prior to starting maps, and third. speech recognition brought up the name and then froze the first time. second it brought up select, other cancel but there was no voice only display showing the options which you could not press.
hope this helps.

When it is set to metric all the speed limits would be correct for mph except it is showing as kph (obviously as it is in metric) This is in the UK. When set to metric 20 mph is showing for a thirty mph actual limit. 25mph=30 40=60
Initially I thought this was the maps but if you change the setting from imperial to metric you will see the difference.
Hopefully the experts will read this, as the conversion factor does not convert across from 60 to 40 using 1.609344 as the factor. Likewise for 20 and 25 accordingly. but I do not know where it is calculated from. so either the map database is wrong or the program is incorrect or both.

C'mon Nokia, this may be a Beta version but OMG have you got a shed load of work to do to even make this a USEABLE product!!
My Version 1 TomTom 1 that's 5 years old still dances absolute rings around this software.
The routes chosen are absolutely NEVER the right ones........it always seems to pick the busiest most tedious drawn out complicated ways of getting from A > B
Time estimations for journeys are therefore way off, 20-30 minutes on what is a 110 mile journey
The map shows which exit to get off a roundabout correctly, but the symbol in the corner NEVER.....and I do mean NEVER, EVER shows the correct angle for the arrow. Voice says 2nd exit off the roundabout, map shows 2nd exit straight across, symbol in the corner does have a 2 in the middle of it but indicates that a right turn is required....WTF!
The "observe speed limit" notifications are useless because ALL of the speed limits set on the roads here in the UK were set in Km/Hr instead of MPH!!!! SO if you're doing 30 in a 30 zone, Ovi Maos thinks you should be doing 20. EVERY single limit I had a "observe speed limit" notification for was out by a factor of around 1.6 i.e.Km/Hr to MPH conversion
The GPS sensitivity of the phone is so poor that the software struggles
The voice from the speakers is too quiet and can't make the voice heard in anything but the quietest of modern cars, or unless you're doing 30mph with the radio off!
There is absolutely no way that I'd pay for this service because it doesn't even come close to matching a 5 year old bottom of the range 1st ever released TomTom

7-10 meters is the accuracy for a civil GPS. I read that it will be improved.
This accuracy not depends of your mobile. There two kinds of gps signal: civil and military. the civil signal, obviously is degraded.

You're experiences interest me as I'm in the UK using Maps 3.03 and have not witnessed these issues.
My routes chance depending on if I have set the app to "Shortest", "Fastest" or "Optimised" and my routes haev seemed quite reasonable.
I beleive the angle roundabout symbol is intended as more of an artists impression rather than an accurate representation.
I have not witnessed the speed limit issues you refer to. I had a moment post install when the speed limits have appeared wrong, but then I realised it had defaulted to metric and I am used to mph (imperial). Once changed the speed limits have appeared to be correct. Your issue sounds like a localised map data issue and not an app issue, as such.
The voice can default to being quite low, but I increase the colume and then it's fine. This can be done via the GUI or the volume key on the phone.
Thought I should identify that this is not a UK issue, but appears somewhat more localised.

Unfortunately the speed limit problem does seem to be a UK issue and effecting more and more people. It started effecting my N95 a couple of weeks ago, whilst a friends N95 was fine. His has now started to have this problem.
Means when ever I go more than 40 mph on a motorway I get nagged to observe the speed limit! Make maps pretty useless at the moment.
There is a thread about this problem at
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=n...
where at least Nokia R&D admit there is a problem albeit not one they seem able to reproduce and fix quickly.

Maybe I'm the odd one out then with correctly functioning Speed Data.
Maybe it's because I'm using map data from Aurgust as I have a copy of teh Cities folder saved on my phone as a back-up to restore after re-installs of OVI Maps. Means I can re-install clean version on the fly without a PC. If that is a case it smells of an issue with the latest Map Data and not the App. Still Nokia, but a slightly different part possibly.

That's an interesting thought, I'll see if I have a copy of my Cities folder and try restoring it, maybe that will be a short term fix to the problem. I would be nice to stop being nagged about speeding all the time:-)
Thanks for your comments.
I do have it set to fastest route already.........but on a 2 hour journey it still suggests a route 20 minutes longer than my TomTom which I know is accurate because I use it daily for business.
The volume on the phone is already at maximum but is rather limited by the speakers and the fact I'm in a cheap company car!!!!! :-(
The settings are in imperial (MPH) already so the speed issue is definitely a glitch.
As for the roundabout symbol being "an artists impression" - WHY? TomTom's symbols for junctions and roundabouts are spot on. Surely it can't be that hard?!
I appreciate the TomTom is a dedicated product designed specifically for Sat-Nav purposes which the N97 isn't, but the app does need a lot of improvements if it's going to be considered as a serious alternative.
Yesterday for example I turned the app on, and granted I was 100 miles or more from where I last had the app switched on, but even having closed the app and rebooted the phone twice, it still hadn't located where I was after HALF AN HOUR!! The GPS sensitivity in this product simply just isn't good enough.
Also you can wave the phone around to get the compass to lock on and have the green status, but it rapidly loses the green status and then never returns either.
Lots of improvements still to go.........but at least 3.03 is MUCH better than 3.01 was - that was just awful!
To continue from post #102
I have now backed up my Cities folder and QF file and then updated to the latest map data using Map Loader and witnessed the same Speed Limit issue.
I then deleted the Cities folder and QF file and re-installed my older backup from early August, I think, and teh speed limit issue went away again.
I believe I have therefor proven that the issue is with the latest Map Data files and not the application.

Hello.
By leaving the route, the maps-app calculates strange new routes. These are poorer than the original. Why maps does not guides me back to the best route?
I have one example. The target route were: http://tiny.cc/DO9io
But I leave it in the middle, driving to "Schilfa". I imagin the maps-app finds a way for me to turn in "Schilfa", but the new route goes to the next village "Gangloffs
