1. Unable to clean up the search field, when focused. "e.g. Pizza or Paris" will reappear when field is empty even when focused.
2. Impossible to use qwerty on this field and at all on Nokia 5530.
Like before in ovi maps ( or maps ) I can browse categories and find the nearest gas station or airport. with the latest version I don't know how this can be done
He!i
Is free type search works like: "streetname number" ?
you can still do a category search e.g. by searching for category names like "Airports" (but you are right we removed the category browsing)
1. The search field is always is focus that's why we decided to keep the example text.
2. Please note that the Nokia 5530 is not supported at the moment.
Could you please re-phrase the question? I don't really get it. Thanks!

the problem is that to find something you need to delete example text, what is impossible. there is option to highlight example and replace it, but it's not really comfortable way on devices with no physical keyboard. it's not comfortable way at all. only high end users are good with text highlighting. so there is quite easy way out - do not always keep focus on the field. it's not a problem to click once on it. and users with no physical keyboard will have to click on it in any way to bring virtual keyboard on screen.
As soon as you start typing the example text disappears.

Hei,
On my Ovi Maps 3.0 on N95 if I choose "Search for address" I see lots of fields like "Country, City, Region, etc etc etc". I need just one string like in Google Map. This is free text search.
The non standard behavior of this control is confusing. Besides, the common use-case is searching for an address not a pizza !
The old multi field way was easier and it also now seems to be impossible to paste in the address from Contacts
You can just enter the post code for an address.
The removal of search contacts is annoying. The best work around at present is to open Contacts and select the contact you want. The go to the business card view. Click on their postcode and then "options" and select "copy detail". Now go to "Maps" and select "Find Places". Click in the search field to bring up the soft keyboard, click on the "three horizontal lines" icon and selct "paste"
You should now have the contact's postcode in the search field in Maps and be able to find them on the map.

i think the contacts program needs an uopdating so that if your viewing a contach in the normal nokia contact app theres a "drive to this contact" option that just opens maps and gets on with the job
Please tell me this is a bug !
The handy find 'pizza or paris' actually means you now have 7 step process to find an address unless you have an incredible memory for post-codes.
Anyway, many countries either don't have postal/zip codes or the area associated with one is large enough that it's of limited use for navigation.
If the freetext searching of locations was as good as Google Maps then this might be forgivable ... sadly it isn't :(
How hard would it really be to create an advanced search option that showed the old screen ?
One more rant: Why can't I use the full-screen keyboard for entering text ?
(btw: I really like the new touch screen menu but please don't dumb down the car navigation to the extent that I have to buy a TomTom!)
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the search facility makes up for the poor map indexing. For example, it was not possible to find Fu Zhou Lu in Shanghai in 3.01. The fuzzy search finds banks and other places with the street name in the address. However, it would be nice just to have the data fixed, so that the search is dependable.
I was driving around France with the previous version of Ovi Maps 3 and found it really useful to be able to search for supermarkets by category. Back in the UK now, I've updated to the new version and this functionality now seems to be missing. When I use the free type search for things like 'supermarket' or 'food' or 'groceries' I don't get the usual (UK) supermarkets (eg Sainsburys, Tesco, etc). Instead, I have to search by brand name, meaning that I have to search 5 times to find the nearest supermarket. Very lame and a major step backwards in usability.
The new interface is easier to use than the previous one, though.
If I start maps in offline mode and search, everything works fine. If I then go online and search, equally fine. But when I then go offline (after having been online) I don't get any results for any search queries until I restart Maps.
Trying to search by street address is very difficult. Takes a lot of experimentation. For example, in the US, adding the city, state & zip finds no results. Just putting zip code and it finds the address..a slight misspell and forget it. Should be imore ntuitive like google maps
cheesevangelist, i can not reproduce the behaviour you mentioned.
I was pleseantly surprised that the search had changed to be like with Google maps with free text search and not the old way. But the first several search attempts (both places and adresses) did not give any correct results, sometimes no results at all!! I tried searching for a road name that I knew was spelled exactly like I did in OVI maps itself and no results! I also tried to make a search and first it said "No results" but after just selecting search again (i.e. exact same search) it then showed some results??
For now I will keep making a Google maps search and then use the results in OVI maps because the search in OVI maps is as unusable as it has been since day one!!
The old category based search must be brought back.
I fully second cheesevangelist's point on this,
Fine app . but when stopping navigation and have to search a new location i get prompted with no results found. first i thought i mis-spelled the name of the location . but even popular places like paris or berlin turn out with no results found.
I have to re-start Ovi maps every time to get a search ...
Bugs:
1) The one-line search is clearly an improvement in usability, but the accuracy of searching definitively needs to be improved. Sometimes streets which are clearly shown on the map are not found.
2) The "Menu" button on the lower left should actually say "Main Menu". I keep pressing it expecting a contextual menu popping up for the highlighted option.
Wish list:
1) a way to access the last search string or recent search strings, e.g. via a drop-down menu. This would make it easier to repeat searches when the desired location is not found, e.g. due to a misspelling.
2) allow the use of the full-screen keyboard.
3) it should be possible to have the ruler shown constantly on the map, not only while zooming.
4) In the detailed search dialogue (the previous way search was done), country, city, street, search, names should be suggested while typing.
I tried to found my car dealer, it is in my same city but in other side where I live, more or less 11 km and it is not shown in the list. Even if there a limit for the distance from the position, it is an error not shown it if it is in the same city.

trying how to find an address I saw that, when you write the country it has to be written in english, i.e. Italy not Italia.
If I well understood to search an address I have to write "street" + "number " + "," + "City" + "," + "country", example:
keilalahdentie 4, espoo, finland.
I saw too that the name of city and the country have to be written entirely, but the street can be a part , example:
there is a result for "keilalahd 4, espoo, finland"
but there is not result for "keilalahdentie 4, espo, finland".
If it is in this way, the "New and improved one-box search" is not improved, it is worse! Try fo find an address in "san benedetto del tronto" in Italy. with the version 3.01 it was enough write "san ben" that it was 4th in the list. or to find "san benedetto val di sambro" 8th in the list.
Update:
It seems that the street address and the city can be inverted, i.e. espoo, keilalahdentie 4, finland

Before upgrading to Beta, the startup display worked as excted in either landscape or potrait mode. Yet the Maps app itself would remian potrait. After upgrading to the currect Beta (as at the time of this post) the Maps app remains potraite only.
Set the Armenia navigation map from the Nokia Maps 1.2 this is beter then in version ovi maps v3
Go to Poland, Warsaw, Potocka street, the south-west end. Search for "rest". The first result is 773,8 kms away, in Germany or Austria. Aparently it's a wrong result.
3.0b7 with map of Poland; offline mode, map loaded yesterday.
Another problem with search results can be reproduced this way:
Go about 1 km from Potocka street. Search for "potocka" while in offline mode. You'll find Potocka street with no problem. No go on line by changing inside "Internet" section of settings panel. Searching for "Potocka" yelds no results. Search again, you'll get "Park K?pa Potocka" which is basically a park, not a street.

Since I last posted, I've completely reset, reformatted, and reinstalled everything on my 5800 and now don't have the online->offline search problem. Perhaps the ovi maps update on 07/09/2009 fixed it? Or maybe my phone was just messed up - I had some problem with something causing 100%cpu use every minute or so.
I guess this may be due to language. Typed in search "Thai Restaurants" thinking it will show all thai restaurants in Helsinki - there are quite a few. It showed me restaurants in Thailand some several thousand kilometres away.
However if you just type "thai" the restaurants appear. No1 in the search is still Thailand Though
Searching for Cambridge turned up Cambridge in Glocestershire not Cambridge in Cambridgeshire.
The overall program is now, IMHO, very well refined and pleasant: what remains really not aligned to the rest in term of quality is the search feature (I mean in ver. 2, 3 and 3.1 as well...). I really cannot understand why a location clearly displayed on an offline map should not be found by the search option: simply ridiculous! I'm talking about town or geographic locations, not restaurants or hotels. Try to find "Passo Campolongo" (renowned Italian Alps Pass and sky area): noway to go there online or offline even if it's on on the map: WHY? Have a look to the search feature in Google Maps: it doesn't miss a hit, if it's on the map it will be found and this should be the goal of a final version.
Thank you.
Giorgio
It can be found it in this way:
livinallongo, passo campolongo, italy
or
passo campol, livinallongo, italy
Passo campolongo is part of the city Livinallongo del Col di Lana, I thing it is for this reason that you did not found nothing.
I found few rules, read my comment #24 of this thread.

Thank you so much navio1973 for your interest in my issue: I'll review carefully your hints as my major concern is how to search effectively on MAPS.
Thank you again.

I can repeat furrydandy's problem. But I find the problem appears when the following conditions exist:
Find a place - Select place - Start navigation "Drive to"
When "Calculating route" is seen, select Stop.
The screen says "Waiting for gps", and "Stop navigation?"; answer "Yes".
And I have to be quite fast with this procedure. If I'm slow like when writing this message, I did not get problems
After this the search doesn't find anything. Then I have to re-start Maps.

The search function doesn't save the entered details - if you need to use another application on the N97 then the search has to be retyped - on the previous version it was saved
the search bar has to wait until the traffic updates have been made until it will accept the search and its too small a search bar for big fingered people to hit - i have to tap the bar 6-7 times before it responds - its not a phone fault
Sometimes both online and off line the search returns not found even though you can physically find the road using the map search function - there should be not difference between on or off line
the initial search should always be off line - if the result is not found then the online search should be offered
Yes i experienced this problem too, there is no auto complete from search history so that the user doesn't need to retyped all the queries again.
Btw, could you add information or example of the addresses that you could not found in both offline and online search, and you could find the road manually? i want to know whether that also happened on my device.. thx
I have discovered that if you search for a UK postcode or place after the maps app has just been opened 99/100 it will find it -
however if you try another search it finds nothing -
if however you come out of the app and restart it the search works fine again but just once
doing multiple searches is very time consuming
in addition the search bar at the top of the touch screen has to be tapped upto 5 times before it will respond
opening the keypad is ok but if you are on the move its a two handed job rather than one finger tip
the search bar needs to be larger with a larger font for ease of use
cheers
Steve
Hi Steve,
I haven't seen that issue on my N97 in the UK. What phone and firmware are you using? Also what product code does your phone have?

Why isn't this search looking in my contacts as well? If not, why isn't there an option for selecting an address from a contact?
Also, why can't I have a default country and state setup.
Hopefully it will be added.
I'm sure we had it at one point.

First of all it would be good to mention that when you update your software on your N79 you will lock your memory card which can be unlocked only by formatting it.
Nokia N79 has 3 options for standby menu aka Symbian menu to show on screen, while default is horizontal there is option for default(no symbian menu) and vertical.
Choosing vertical will cause your screen to flicker, you wont be able to access the menu and incoming alerts are not shown by sound or picture.
- The only way for you to access your menu and change either factory settings or the menu itself to horizontal or non you will have to press some numbers first and then access the menu.
Installing the new software for my Nokia has caused me all of my pictures + videos which were priceless to me.

QA Seavus Macedonia
