Was preparing route at home. When browsing overview of route (the view with a vertical scroll bar showing various points along the route), I zoomed in to look at certain points in greater detail.

While I was looking at the details, Ovi Maps did route recalculation several times, and every single time it completely zoomed out and went back to the starting point in the overview. Annoying.

Need to think of a non-disruptive way to handle this situation.

One way is to prompt user before route recalculation in this case. But with Ovi Maps doing multiple recalculations, frequent prompts can get annoying too.

Alternatively, do not do any recalculation and wait until user appears to have stopped viewing the route, then proceed with recalculation.

I don't see why Ovi maps would have to recalculate any route, if you were sitting static at your home.

Maybe the trouble here is that you where inside a building, with a so-so GPS signal, and a moving GSM triangulation. That would explain those recalcuation. Therefore you're right, if the user is seeing deliberately some data (rather changing scale, point of view, ...) those actions should not be stopped by recalculations.

That said, what I also find annoying with recalculations is :
- when you have set up a route
- are following it
- traffic jam, street is being maintained
- user doesn't follow anymore the pre-calculated route
In this case, Ovi maps keeps trying to put you again on the original route. It should rather recalculate a whole new optimised route, not only the way to put you back on the old route.

But it does what you ask for: recalculates a new route!

Of course it is possible that at first the best route is to make a u-turn (or a loop and return to the previous route) but once you are far enough the optimal route will be a truly new one.

Good point.

Yes, that is what I observe on my TomTom GPS device.

When I miss a turn, it will try to find a way back to the original route.

If that is not viable, it will suggest a new optimised route.

As a general observation, at this point, I do find TomTom more reliable.

But I believe Nokia can match the functionality and usability of dedicated GPS devices if it continues to listen to users, and keeps up the good work.

@Fonero : considering my experience I'm not really sure it will recalculate a true new route (or at least in a useful time). To explain : I'm mostly using it in a city that I really know. Everytime that at some point I decided not to follow Ovi maps route to reflect real street conditions, Ovi maps always calculated how to get back on the original route, without taking in account the new options this detour the user chosen to do. That said in a city, the detours being made are not kilometers scaled. It's more a question of hundreds of meters. I see two possibilities :
- The trigger, the soft parameter to really rebuild the best route from a point isn't adapted to city routes.
- It prefers major streets, to little streets (in my city driving use-cases, the standard route is always relying on major streets and when I get on smaller one to avoid a street jam or maintenance dead-end or whatever, it doesn't seem to consider those "small streets")

I have seen OM recalculate a new optimal route so many times, that I am quite confident of my claim. (Last experience from yesterday: I had to drive either south or north to go round a lake to get home. I decided to drive north although OM suggested turning south. For the first 3km OM suggested several times turning south but then noticed that the north route had become shorter.)

Your suggestion that OM prefers major streets sounds quite plausible to me. If I remember right someone complained (here at betalabs discussion) that OM is too eager to use major roads, at least motorways.

I must add that most of my recalculating experience is from outside cities.

here in Manchester, Uk, the maps commonly tries to recalculate the route even if I'm on the motorway, with the n97 in it's cradle (vertically). It just goes nuts for a few minutes, suggesting I'm in a street perhaps 400 yds either side of where I actually am.
It would be good if the software could intelligently assume if you've been on a route for some time that you must still be there, if there's a short 'blackspot' or whatever. That aside, i find Ovi Maps good, although I still prefer the original NokiaMaps I used to subscribe to for accuracy and accessibility.

@sfyangnokia There are 3 x types of routes that the web version of Ovi maps calculates. Optimised, Faster, Shorter. It calculates them one at a time and each time it finishes calculating one, it zooms back out to the route overview....
It is annoying especially on long distance routes that take several seconds for each route to calculate.

Note: The differing routes will only appear if they follow different roads, so you may not see the three separate options appear.

I notice this on Safari and can't remember if it happens on IE.

i find ovi maps will try to take me 2-3 klms fom my position and put me on a mtorway or toll rd even when i have a clear route ahead of me.......It even tries to make me drive around the block to follow it's route when i am only 20 mtrs from destination.
