Hi all,
There was a firmware update v31 released today for the Nokia 5800. I have verified that we now have landscape mode working with the latest maps beta! It looks really nice, with very little wasted space and none of that black bar junk that the poor N97 owners seem to be talking about.
Check FOTA or NSU for the firmware update. If it doesn't show for your phone, then you just have to wait until Nokia makes it available. Check online for product code availability (do NOT ask here).

This version of maps doesn't have the screenshot option enabled, so unfortunately I can't! All I can say is, it looks just like the landscape mode shown in the 5800 Navigation Edition promo video. You can see it at http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_navigation_edition_comes_to_lead_your... .

So the screen is same as on N97... In my opinion there is a lot of black bars. On the right side where are the compass, speed etc... it is no neccesary to be it in the black field, also the street indications are both in the black bar, a lot of wasted space, which can be used for the map...

have a look there what I mean, this is screenshot from iphone but you can see there are no black bars at all almost whole screen is used for the map
I don't know what this whole "black bars" junk is that people keep talking about, but there are none of those on my 5800 in landscape mode. There is the map fullscreen, a small info rectangle with the current street name on the top middle, and the standard menu/search buttons as well as satellite status and compass/zoom buttons. No "black bars" unnecessarily taking up space.

I assume that these are the sections of the screen they are referring to. I don't see these as wasted either and find this information useful, but others obviously do not. Maybe a level of info displayed option would be preferred by some.

The places for map is very limited now in my opion...
Black field on tho top, white field on the botton and the biggest black space on the right side...
Aah josef now I see what you mean. Yes that is exactly how it looks now on the 5800. I suppose they could clean that up a bit and give us back some screen space, but from the looks of how the Maps development has been going over the past few months, I wouldn't hold my breath for it. There are waaaay too many other bugs to fix.

Why would anyone want to navigate in landscape mode? When driving forward, it's more important to see forward in the map, rather than to your sides.
Only when trying to find a location while standing is the landscape mode actually useful.
In some ways I tend to agree with your logic, lcchan. However, the 3D navigation mode really benefits from landscape mode, since the bird's eye camera inherently gives you a lot of forward view anyway. Perhaps this is why EVERY dedicated gps navigation system ever made has used a landscape screen.

Just upgraded the Maps app on the 5800 and it does not rotate - No Landscape. The N97 (stable release of Nokia Maps) rotates to lanscape mode just fine.
Landscape is critical (to me) because I use the TV-Out feature to display navigation on my car's head unit. The 5800's aspect ratio is all wrong in potrait mode and the text and graphics are hardly legible. However, in landcape mode the aspect ratio matches that of my car's screen perfectly. The sound comes through the car's speakers.
Strangely, the N97 displays mediocre in both Landscape and Potraite mode (it is useable but does not excell) This makes me wonder what are the TV-Out resolutions of both 5800 and N97 (in Landscape and in Potrait)? It's definately not the same.

You have to update your 5800's firmware to v31 that was just released a few days ago. Check NSU and FOTA ... if you don't see it in either of those places, you'll have to wait for Nokia to release the firmware for your phone's region.
