Anyone know what the text to speech function is? How do i access it and use it etc?
(is it just a new name for voice navigation?)

Text to speech is a system where the phone uses some clever processing to converted written text into spoken word. This enabels OVI Maps 3.03 to speak the road names during Voice Guidance during Navigation.

i would assume then that this is an automatic function as i can find no setting to enable / disable it and so far it hasn't mentioned any road names to me whilst using the navigation functions.
Do you need to re download the voice files for this to work - i did not update either the maps or the voice files when i installed 3.03

You need to change the voice file in "Voice Guidance" in "Navigaion", in "Settings".
It can take a little while to refresh you list in Voice Guidance, but you are looking for either English or German with street names.

This feature is great, and a major step forward. It would be good though to maybe have options to say which roads are spoken and which roads aren't using the types of roads. In the UK the types of roads would be Motorways, Dual Carrageways, A-Road, B-Road, Street.

I use map loader to load all maps and voices and its not shown in there - followed your instructions and have got the correct voice now so will see how goes!
In the final versions it would need to be more prominent or on map loader itself - obviously a beta at the moment so until its proven that's probably why it can only be downloaded within compatible versions.

I have just installed ovi maps beta on my new 5800, but under "voice guidance" in "settings", there is no option for English with street names. Is a separate voice file download needed?
try to delete everything in the folder cities/disccache/voices and dowloand the voices from OM settings

Deleted everything in the discache/voices and reinstalled the OM application, but still shows the same voice list in OM settings, without the option for english with street names. i\In fact, when I first deleted all the voices and the voice catalog file in the cache, the OM application would not be able to download any voice files despite being on the list. I then reinstalled the 3.03(54) OM application, thinking that it would then load the voice catalog file in the cache, but the file was still missing. It was only when I installed the previous version 3.01 (32) that the voice catalog file appeared in the cache. I then installed 3.03(54) back on, and the file catalog did change (it added English surfer dude), but still no English with street names.
Have noticed that there has been a recent update to the english with streets voice file updated to correct over accurate distance info. Sould like the Post Radio Four Lady (PR4L) form the Scott Mills show on BBC Radio 1.

Do you plan to do also text-to-speach in another langueges than only German and English?
last time I checked it was not possible to download "With Streets" versions via Map Updater.

I need also help regarding this message reader, or what the name is! I have also N97 and installed the Ovi Maps and the message reader. Now i have the problem that i can't uninstall or disable the message reader programm. This programm reads all my incoming messages from the phone and i can't stop it. I have to cover the speaker! How the hell i can disable or unintall this app or what the name is! Please help me!
The N97 coes with a message reader pre-installed called "Message Reader", which is non-uninstallabel as it is part of the firmware. If you downloaded a Message Reader from OVI Store you should be able to find out what it was by checking your download history on the OVI Store website.
If you can advise what it is then we may be able to advise how to remove it.

I think it is the message reader from the firmware, because i checked the history of ovi store, i didn't get it from there. So do you know how to disable it if can not uninsall it? Thanks again...
