Maps does work nicely and well in your home network when you have a data package plan . But as soon your in an outside network ( Country ) you start paying for a horrible price the network assisted positioning.
By turning "network positioning " and "assisted gps "off in settingsm of your fone ( and only let it run on gps positioning " it will horribly fail to get a connection in a reasonable time .. it may take up to 30 min until the antenna pick up a descend signal ( talking on a open space here )

My experience is exactly the same. In my home network (Australia) the GPS works very well. Outside (in the USA for example) it is worthless, and the roaming charges makes its use prohibitive.

My GPS antenna is to be replaced under warrantee for a better performing new larger patch. Contact your local Nokia Service Centre and ask them about it.

Hi guys,

You are complaining about paying charges by downloading the maps, why don't you use Nokia Maps Loader?

Hi you may want to try out Google maps it is not always GPS hardware causing the GPS lock issues the follwing is a post I put for Nokia to test.

I have a Nokia 95-8GB and N97 on both of these Devices Google Maps out perform in getting a GPS lock when in built up areas. How come on a Nokia Devices Google managed to get the best out of and Nokia seems to be failing. Please pass this to some one to look at it this will help Nokia in lots of support costs as I reading that Lots of N97 owners are taking their devices to Nokia Repair Centers. Also help to offset some of the bad press Nokia getting.

N97 FW 20.0.019
N95 FW 31.0.015

Nokia Maps version tried both released version 3.01 and 3.03 from beta labs.

Also is there newer version 3.03 avaliable for download test any sooner?

Only asking the user reported the GPS to test as you may find what I said in the prefix to my copy of the post I raised in the bugreport section. so keep your hats on. It is the software issue don't blame the hardware is what I said.

There is a known hardware bug on the N97 and the problem may be partially caused by mods to the sotfware trying to handle the poor signal strength issue resulting from the hardware issue.

This not just related to N97 only Google maps and Voice Search can get GPS much quicker on 3 diffrent Nokia devices with all latest FW and Latest Maps. There may be hardware issues on N97 but Software is the one easily fixed and cost effective and keep user confidence
