What?s the point of that large ugly white bar to the right?
You may want to give a little more than zero information about your system. For example I have a 5800 with the latest firmware (v30.0.011), and there is no large ugly white bar anywhere on the screen.

i also use maps 3.0 but one version earlier. in there i don't see any white bar, but buttons.
i have 5800XM with v21 firmware. i don't know if should i updgrade Maps, because it works great as far as i know, and in the videos this ugly white bar can only be a bad thing. i prefer buttons instead.

I would also prefer buttons instead of white and specially black bar in the lanscape navigation mode. Keep the screen clean and bigger, no bars all around
Not seen it on my N97. Have a black section with speed info etc. but no white bar that I have noticed.

I mean in the landscape mode during navigation there is big black section on the right side. I think it is not necessary, just buttons will be enought, so the screen with maps can be bigger, the same with the road names up and down - the black field is overloading a quite large piece of the map
