The E75 is an S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 device.

It is not listed on the compatible phones list. You could try the S60 v3.2 Devices download, but no guarantees.

I am not a Nokia employee so you install at your own risk.

ive tried to install the s60 v3.2 version on my e75 but as expected it didnt work, it installed and everything but when i restarted the fone n tried to run it nuthing happens, i click the maps icon n thats it nothing happens at all, NOKIA PLEAAASE RELEASE A VERSION THAT SUPPORTS E75, am realy thinkin of selling the fone because nokia seriously forgot it ever made it, not a single update or software or info or anything at all regarding the e75

I tried to install the S60v3 FP2 version of Ovi Maps 3.04 on my E75... Get "You do not have permission to install the application"...
I can't undestand why this restriction while the E75 is a 2009 phone with the latest version of S60 for non-touch devices...

I'm thinking of selling my E75 - its a good phone, just not supported by its parents. In fact the more I have to deal with Nokia/Maps/Ovi/free navigation the more I realise that Nokia feels directionless and will continue to loss out to its rivals. What a jumbled mess.

Until the moment, no application in Betalabs is useful for me (I have around 10 applications on my phone).

I'm just saying this is exactly the same happened with Last.fm, they starting to ask money for third world countries customers so people from the first world can enjoy it for free.

Here customers with "outdated" phones have to pay the service for others with "newest" devices. There are no technical reasons to make the difference; it's just that.

My undestanding is that the aim of BetaLabs is actually to test applications before making them available for regular use...
This is why I can't understand why a mobile like the E75 with S60 3rd Edition FP2 is not allowed to test the application. Can anyone explain this?

Let's speculate.

First of all, Nokia E75 hardware is probably closer to 3.1 devices (CPU for example), which might be one of the reasons that more powerful phones get to test the new app first, before it is optimized for slower devices. From what I can see (not in my phone though), 3.04 brings more features than just "free navigation".

Second, Nokia might have much more knowledge about phone users than we have (actually, I wonder how much knowledge about users Nokia really has). E75 seems to be a 100%-boring, business device (although it's great to use), so the potential amount of testers might be not high enough to risk business users going for beta.

Actually, this final speculation might work for E71 also. There is probably enough beta-testers using E71 out there, but even more users who do not want to risk anything (but will tempted to use something which is "free"). It might be that the choice of devices is not only based on hardware and OS version, but on actual user demographic. N97, mini, 5800, 5230 and X6 are not business phones and some of them made their users used to crashes and tinkering anyway. For the others - I don't expect E52, E55, E72, 6730 or 6710 to be wildly popular, I haven't met or seen or heard of anyone using them (anecdotal evidence warning). Making a large number of users wanting to get something, even if they are not happy about it, is still a better strategy than screwing with very positive experience people are having with their N95s, E71s and E75s.

OTOH, more devices were to be supported in March, right?

I can't install it on my phone, why? I have the latest firmware (because newer doesn't exists). Neither stable 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 doesn't work with Nokia 6760 Slide.

The Nokia 6760 Slide is a S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 device. OVI Maps 3.03 and 3.04 are only for S60 5th Edition devices with touch screens.

If it's the free navigation you are after, Nokia have now reduced the annual licences down to 10 EURO for phones using v3.01 like yours.

Just wishing to correct - some V3.2 are also supported. It very much depends on hardware and firmware for fp2 devices. It may well be that later firmwares for fp2 devices may correct some of the elements missing to run OM 3.03 and later but nothing is guaranteed

I know here are already a lot of threads about this topc, but I think the nokia-people need to read it too often to change this...

I bought my 6220 classic only 1,5 years ago and paid about €300, and now I get no support anymore for this phone? Is this the way nokia tries to sell new phones?

There are no HARDWARE-limitations that this software cannot run on 3rd-edition-phones, its just a synthetic limitation of nokia. There would be no problem to compile this for the "old" OS, or to make an OS-Update possible for older phones.

Look at Android, look at iPhone. These devices can be updated to the newest versions with the newest features. Smartphones are more like a pc, and there is an OS-update also possible.

So please, tell us if the can expect an update for our "ancient" phones from the last year, or if we should already search for another phone-manufacturer. The last would be a shame, because the nokia-devices are really good, but without software-support you can sell the best phones just to stupid people...

Human prychology is a strange thing.

I bought E66 fully aware of the licensing system for voice navigation.
Now some newer models get voice navigation for free. Logically I know nothing has changed for worse. I can get voice navigation
as before.

On the level of feelings, however, things are not logical. Somehow I feel
as if something had been taken from me. Nokia has behaved totally logically, but they did not take into account the irrational feelings that are typical for human beings.

It seems I am not the only angry cutomer.

PS Nokia announced the list of supported models. An extra stupidity was to say that more (old) models will added but not telling what they are. This keeps the matter open for a lot of phone owners.

I too consider it extremely anoying that there's no possibility to do major OS upgrades or get the software to work on some top notch phone after it's less than two years old... this had frequently led me to think of changing the phone brand. I'm also a bit surprised that it seems that there no one from Nokia addressing this issue, or explaining why they're doing it, on this (or other similar) thread.

I think, this restriction on only some S60v3 FP2 models is only artificial. When you inspect .sis installation file for Ovi Maps 3.04 Beta, with e.g. SISContents software, there are enumerated specific models, which are compared with your actual phone model. Models namely are: E52, E55, E72, N86 8MP, 6710 Navigator, 6720 Classic, 6730 Classic and even some future models (RM-645, RM-632, RM-631, RM-627).
So in my opinion, if Nokia wants, there is no problem to enable free navigation for other S60v3 FP2, e.g. N85, 6210 Navigator, 6220 Classic, E75, 5730XM, N96, N78, N79
What dou you think about it?

I too am annoyed at this as I have a 5730 express music
and found that it was one of the devices "off the list", yet I know its OS is capable of running it.
$100 a year for drive is just too much to pay, when its being offered with other models for free.
The real pity is i really like this phones features better than nearly any other model on the market.

@s0ulless: So many people seem to forget that this is beta software. I am unaware of other manufacturers providing the user with the chance to beta test software.

When people talk about the level of support they get from other maufacturers they are referring to support for production released applications and not development apps like supplied in Beta Labs. If you are designing a new application or testing an experimental application you don't design for every phone you have ever made. You will usually be designing with future models in mind.

I have had periods of time when the phone model I have been using has not been supported. That is just something we have to accept though. There are a number of applications designed for S60v3.1 & S60v3.2 devices that have never made it to S60v5 as their development was mainly prior to the release of the first S60v5 handset (Nokia 5800). I accept this and enjoy haveing the chance to use the beta versions that are available to me. At least Nokia give me the chance to be involved.

Just read an article on all about symbian regarding navigation license costs. Nokia have droppped the price for all devices not supported by 3.03 free nav to 10 euros. So virtually free. So for the price of two coffees in cafe and maybe a slice of cake you can now have your virtually free nav althought its version 3.01.

Just thought I should mention a couple of things here

Firstly The iphone 2G - apples first release will not be getting anymore OS updates.

Secondly there are loads of Android devices that will not be getting 2.1 OS version.

So it is not just Nokia all OS systems have this. And please do not start comparing a mobile device to a PC. They are completely different and even then some PC's which perhaps could be upgraded to win7 do not have the system requirements to run the OS so they too cannot be upgraded. Its a fact of life that technology moves so fast that this sort of thing will happen.

Yes it may be annoying but at least Nokia have done something by reducing the cost of Navigation licenses for all devices not supported by the free navigation version. You show another company that has done that. And don't say Google maps as that only offers free nav on a couple of android devices and thats it.

I find it frustrating that there is little evidence of any work being done to update the 3.03 software or some other later version to support the free directions capability offered with several of the newer models. I came on to beta labs to look around and again it appears that the same several phones are the ones who get this capability. That is pretty crappy. I have an E71 that I purchased in January (so I'll have it for a while) and I find it pretty remarkable that is isn't supported for this, but istead I have to pay a fee for directions. I did see one post that said specific release dates can't be released, but expect something at the end of the Q1 or begining of Q2 CY10. So...I'm still waiting....

Nokia are adding support for 3.03 to devices when they are ready - The N86 just got added so be patient. You have an FP1 phone so it may be the case that it needs a FW update to run the new OM because it is missing enablers that the newer FP2.3 devices have. When you say pay its hardly expensive at 10 euros - 3 starbucks coffees costs more than that and they are gone in 30 minutes - you get directions for a whole year for 10 euros.

Hi,

I have an E71, and I'd just like to make sure it's clear... I'm not complaining that 3.03 isn't available yet for my phone.

I am currently happily running Nokia Maps 2 with a license, but I would like to upgrade the phone's firmware (and it would be easier if I did not have to bother with the hassle of ensuring my license remains valid), so I was wondering if anyone had any vague idea of a release date for 3.03 on the E71?

Why can NOT install free navigation on my nokia n95-2 8gb RM-320?
I buy this phone like anyone else who buy n97 or 5800, but they have free ovi maps... Is a NOKIA phone, not SE, or Iphone, is NOKIA, this is discrimination

and why map of Romania is NOT full by now, 36 months have passed since the launch of Nokia Maps software and Romania map is still very, very poor

Hi, the 5230 is a 5th edition device. It should use the same version as the 5800 and n97 family. The 3.2 file is for s60r3fp2 devices such as the Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72

Something's not right here... How come owners of older devices, with no ability to upgrade to the latest version of OVI Maps, have pay for a license whilst the ones who don't pay anything get access to the latest features?

Please someone enlighten me 'cause I don't see any sense on this! Am I missing something here?

I feel extremely disappointed and frustrated not being able to upgrade OVI maps on my 6210N, to say the least, and on top of that I even have to pay for a license!

@BlackSpark: If I'm not wrong you were already having to pay for a licence, which has now been greatly reduced in price.

Yes you don't have the latest and greatest feartures and the Free Navigation, but this is known as progress. All businesses have a model and that normally includes wanting people to buy new devices as otherwise they wouldbn't be businesses for very long.

Before EVERYONE starts complaining and disagree with my point of view, I will again advise that you look at Nokia's competition and see that they want you to buy new mobiles too and don't provide cheap Mobile Navigation in the 1st place. Nokia provide more post purchase apps than any other phone manufacturer that I know of, without the user having to pay money to third partys for it.

At the end of the day the 6210 Navigation is an old devices as it was Announced back in 11 February 2008.

Nokia have said all along that they will roll out the free nav to other phones as time goes by and an example of this occured just last week. In all cases so far when this has occured the device has gain access to the new features too.

@ mbrett: Of course business is business. And I completely understand that some point in time devices stops being supported by the manufacturer. It makes perfect sense!

What doesn't (at least to me) is the fact that I have to pay for a license (regardless the accessible price, I must agree on that) of a software that is used too on the most recent devices but these ones instead, they don't have to pay for it. It's absurd!

It should be exactly the other way. They have access to upgrades and new features, they should be the ones paying and supporting the development.

But nevertheless, let's get restricted to that fact that I have to pay for a license and forget what I said before.

I paid, right? Is it too much asking support for my device?
My phone it's even still under warranty! It's not that old!

How come shouldn't I feel that the manufacturer is turning it's back on me?

Sincerely, I hope you're right about Nokia releasing the free nav to other phones as time goes by and that my model gets supported meanwhile.

I completely understand your frustration, but I suppose my point is that the developement need to prioritise their time on the newer and future models as these models pay the bills. Compatibility for older models depends on resource availability. This may appear harsh on older model owners.

As for the license cost I'm sure they have there reasons, weather or not they are permitted to advise what they are.

maybe it could even be some sort of contractual issue that is being escaped via v3.03 and above, who knows.

ovi maps beta is not available for e71 at the moment and i think it will not be.

Also, nokia dropped maps price from 80 euro to 10 euro. so you can buy for 1 year with 10 euro

Can you be a bit more specific please. Firstly is you are trying to install Ovi Maps beta on a N70 I think you will face a lot of issues.

1. Your S60 V2.3 - not compatible
2. you only have 22Mb C: memory - not enough

I could go on but a 5 yr old device will not run OM

It's great that you're continuing to develop the Ovi Maps application for Symbian, but could you confirm that this hasn't been at the expense of the release of a version for Maemo and the N900?

Since the announcement of the free voice-guided navigation, there's been no word at all as to when/if N900 users are going to be able to get this feature. It would be great to have some sort of announcement so that we're not just left completely in the dark.

For N900 I can only say that there will be an update quite soon but as it was built from scratch it will not be as feature rich as the S60 application.

I'm buying a Garmin this weekend, with all the trouble I had yesterday with maps 3.01 on my N96 running firmware 30.101. 3.01 resets the phone randomly (but usually at the worst possible time), and then I have to shut down the phone and turn it on again, as it won't get a GPS lock and the accelerometer seems disabled (doesn't detect that the phone is on its side) after the reset.
So a working version would be nice... I just regret having paid one more navigation month for a software that is turning out to be unusable.

Seeing as how the E71x is one of the most prominent devices Nokia on AT&T's lineup, it would be great if its many owners, myself inluded, had access to Ovi Maps Beta. It's a considerable tease to see such a service promoted as being available for Nokia phones forever, but even if a phone is capable of hosting such an application, it's left out. If the E72 can have it, why can't the E71?

You need to remember the E71x has custom firmware for AT&T. Nokia cannot just give it free navigation without the consent of AT&T. Also the E71 normal variants are not supported as of yet.

The compatible phones are listed on the download page.

Presently Maps v3.03 and v3.04 are only compatible with touch screen phones based on the S60v5 platform.

Prices in Poland are not 10/euro per year unfortunately, I ma buying this occasionally however it is not very efficient. More over you can use free navigation on new E series devices which are not always touchscreen equipped. I was writing to Nokia complaining that such a treatment is not totally fair, however no reply...:-)

s60v5 is developed for Tocuhscreen phones, you cannot be able to install s60v5 to your s60v3 phone.

As irfun4ever advises it is not possible to upgrade your phone's OS to a different version. S60 5th Edition (S60v5)was developed for touch screen devices, whereas S60 3rd Edition (S60v3)is for non-touchscreen devices, but it goes further than that. It is also not possible to change a phone from S60v3 (original release) (S60v3) to S60v3 Feature Pack 1 (S60v3.1) or 2 (S60v3.2).

There is talk that devices like the N900 (Maemo) will be able to be upgraded, but I believe this is just runour at present.

Things could change for future phones as the next version of Symbian (Symbian^3) will be completely open source, but I can't promise anything as historically devices have been designed hand in hand with the capabilities of a specific Symbian version possibly limiting that phone to that version.

People inadvertently compare phones and Symbian to PCs and Windows, but a major differnce is the fact that when you upgrade your Windows OS you can replace hardware in you PC to support the new version and you can't do this with a phone.

Agreed that 10 Euros is not much money, but it still seems strange to charge for an old and inferior version when newer and better versions are free, and much more importantly, I would like to have the benefit of the new functionality on my 3.1 device.

Plus the access to Lonely Planet etc Guides is missing now on 3.1.

I would be happy to upgrade to newer hardware running 5th Ed or Maemo if Nokia made a device that was a good replacement for the N95 - I'd get the N86, except for the fact that the display is almost unusable in bright light - a bit of a problem for a device that majors on camera functionality.)

Thanks Nokia, but this is confusing. Although it said on the download page it is for E - series phones, it is compatible with more phones? mine is N86

Maybe more FP2 can install it I guess .. but we need response.

I encourage everyone to try it out, it works perfectly for me. Even when calculating new route it is fast enough for turn to turn like 50m or so..

Managed to install ovi maps 3.04b using steps mentioned above.

i just uninstalled nokia maps(5mb)form app manager and installed ovi maps 3.04b, no error. But when i see app manaer now it is showing both nokia maps(5mb), and ovimaps(8 mb). Installing ovi maps 3.04 took extra 11 mb i.e. before 3.04b installation c: was 36mb free and after that it is 25 mb free. Where my crucial c: space had gone?

I think it should take only 2-3 mb extra as it is update to 3.01 and 3.01 took some space in c: which might have been released when i uninstalled maps 3.01(5mb).

any comments??

A lot is added in Maps 3.03 & 3.04, including the location posting. When it comes to OVI Maps and Nokia Maps, you may find that one is the installer. Go to view details for each file in Application Manager and you should find one installed on the D: drive.

Sorry ignore last comment. What i meant to say was my wifi symbol appears all the time, even after i exit the maps prog. I will only disappear when I shut the phone down completely. Any ideas why?

its not wifi symbol, its gps symbol that does not disappear after exiting ovi maps. Only way is to restart phone.
I don't think so that program remains running in the background, its just that icon dosen't disappear.

i understood what u said. But one thing i want to say that when it is installed it should not take up too much extra space, it must overwrite the previous maps application i.e when 3.04 was not installed 3.01 was there and c: was 37 mb, there 3.01 might have occupied some space say5-6mb of occupied space of c:. So when 3.04 is installed it should overwrite 3.01 ie use that 5-6 mb (previously occupied by 3.01)+some extra space (as new features are introduced in 3.04) say 3-4 mb. Simple maths show that in such case c: should now be 33-34mb free and not 29mb free( which is as when 3.04 installed it took 8 mb extra without overwriting 3.01).

@ansgp: I understand you poitn with regards over-writing of older version of maps when they are replaced. There is one issue with this. The original version of Maps you have no your phone is held within the Firmware and as such stored on a flash drive (F: drive). When a new version of Maps is released it has to be installed on the C: drive as only firmware is stored in flash memory. All Map updates after this will replace the previous version installed on the C: drive, but the only way that the original F: drive Maps version can be overwritten is via Firmware update.

All we can hope is that when our phones get Firmware updates the latest versions of applications like OVI Maps are made part of these Firmware updates.

This applies to other applications too like OVI Contacts and for some phone models Nokia Messaging E-mail.

I hope this explains the situation somewhat.

I assume the 3.01 version of OVI Maps was installed by yourself separately to the firmware. If so it would be installed on the C: drive and wuold be replaced by v3.04. Many have beleived that the OVI Maps (Installer) and Nokia Maps (application file) apps are both on the C: drive, but they are not the installer is on the D: drive (which we have not previously been aware of on the N97). This is proven by the uninstall of the installer having no effect on C: drive available space.

The files that add to the Nokia Maps (application file (9MB)) are things like OVI Maps WiFi/Network Positioning (0.132MB) which is a new addition in Maps 3.04, Share location Agent (2MB), Share Location (0.625MB), Share Location Widget (0.031MB). There may be other that I have missed. If so I appologies. As stated above, OVI Maps (7MB) is the installer for OVI Maps and is installed on the D: drive according to the "View details" screen in "Application Manager".

I installed itself on the N96 8MP OVI Maps v3.04 now after an application is not switched off. when satellite in the upper-right corner, you can turn off just off and then turning on the phone.

hey guys thanks for discussing your stuff on this thread. as for ovi maps 3.04, it works fine with my N86 ever since i created this thread. there were few issues i encountered but maybe due to GPS signal strenght at my location.

here are some answers to few questions give above:

1. I installed this ovi maps version through USB cable. I sometimes having a hard time using Bluetooth so I stick with USB cable, it's stable.

2. When installing any application updates, ALWAYS remove the older version as this crap up your system. Always do clean intall so that you benefit on the latest features of the upgrade.

3. You must make sure that firmware of your N86 8MP is the latest version (v21.006) before installing ovi maps 3.04 beta, otherwise you'll encounter some unwanted issues while using this application.

4. I enjoy using share location. It allows me to instantly share my current position on the map, as well as pictures on my current position. Love it!

5. I recommend to include N86 8MP on list of the models supported by Ovi Maps. Hope Ovi team considers this recommendation.

the 5530 is not in the list of supported mobile (http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-beta-for-mobile/download_and_ins...). If you could try the version 3.01 but you will need a license.
The main problem of Google Maps is that you have to be connected to download the maps everytime and when you are abroad the costs for roaming for data transfer are very expensive.

Only tried it a few days on my 5530 v20.0.08 with external GPS Royaltek RTB-2001 for a few short routes. Seems to work fine. Fast recalculation when I took another route than the suggested one.
as mentioned in many other comments, offline routeplanning without GPS remains a major problem.

if your BT gps is not connected you receive a lot of message about the request to connect it or something else?
If it is in this way, you could try to disable in gps data->positioning settings the bluetooth gps and plan your route.

Also i think that the Nokia move places stored in the favorite places for customers and move to the map without permission, to expand the research base, if this this true it means that your house added in the list of your favorite becomes special when you search for map

within your street Is this considered a violation of customer data .
Please clients that their laws allow to sue Nokia not withhold it.

The phones the software is compatible with are all similar, bit not the E90 communicator. The communicator is designed for business users and multi-tasking, so why would a business operator be excluded from a useful maps program? I make deliveries all the time and I am still using Google maps, waiting for something like Ovi Maps to come along.

when you are going to add support for s60v3 FP1 devices ? Some of the fp1 devices have better hardware than fp2 devices. Thats why we bought them at higher price. Are you sleeping nokia guys? You shouldn't forget that the last best devices from nokia before n8 were n95 and n82.

@ajay007700 At least the N95 and N82 don't spontaneously reboot when using GPS, like the N96. Face it, nokia doesn't care about the schmucks who bought a "flagship" phone thinking it would be supported, or at least would have working firmware. All symbian pre v5 phones were dumped, the developers fired, and symbian is about to die, replaced by meego.
I've complained here and on other nokia forums a few times about the lack of support for my N96, and asked for fixes for the most obvious firmware problems. No answer. Now I've bought a Android phone, and I won't be using a Nokia again. There might still be a miracle from Nokia (fixed firmware for N96, updated software for "old" phones) to convince me back, but since most symbian developers were fired, I don't think it will happen. We paid top prices for supposedly top devices, and were quickly forgotten. Unless you keep buying a new device every 3 months, Nokia doesn't care about you.

@jbernardo I totally agree. I think with this policy & attitude, END OF NOKIA IS VERY NEAR. Face it buying a new Nokia flagship every 3 months for greatest of prices while other manufacturers are giving more in terms of both hardware and software at less price doesn't make any sense. People are not fools anymore. I have also complained about software issues many times but there was no answer from nokia.
