Hi all! Ovi Maps was last week very happy to launch the first Macintosh supported version of maps.ovi.com, and so far the user response has been great. We have however had some Macintosh users reporting some strange and difficult to reproduce problems with the Safari version of Ovi Maps. This is where YOU come in... If you are a Macintosh user with Safari 2, 3 or 4 Beta, we would love to hear your feedback on how Ovi Maps is working for you in Safari. In particular, tell us:

How did you find the plugin installation process? Did everything download and install for you ok?
How does the map itself perform for you? Is it responsive? Does the map data download correctly?
Are the favourites working well for you? Can you store and access your favourites easily?
What happens when you reboot your computer after installing the plugin? Does everything still work ok?

If you do see errors, please be sure to tell us:

What version of MacOS and Safari you are using
Exactly what you did to see the problem
Can you take any steps to correct it? Restart safari, for example?

I'm having problems staying logged in, I click the sign in link, I can see the url changing (to account.nokia.com) a couple times. It seems to stop when I see "Good to see you" in the Ovi bar, but right after I click anything that needs the login it complains that I'm not logged in.

The only thing i can think of that's causing this is that I updated to safari 4 beta, then downgraded it later.

That and it keeps throwing the focus to germany, bug in the IP location system?

First off, I am very happy that Nokia is moving towards the mac audience.

I am having the same issue as fernando, I can't stay logged in, I am also using safari 4 but I have not downgraded like he has.

Second, while I was installing the plug-in, safari just closed without warning. I don't think that's right. Most of the time I have many tabs open and I could be writing an email while installing stuff, a warning would be nice, or asking the user to close safari would be a better idea.

Will start testing this right away.

Yay, the Mac's getting some love :D

The plugin installation was fine, no trouble there, although the lack of warning about Safari closing could be annoying for some (I expected it but others won't). The map download is quite responsive although satellite photos do take somewhat unacceptable time to download IMO (guess that's not related to the Mac though). The maps thus far download better than a certain other Map engine from a company beginning with G, sometimes on theirs you end up with this random square in the middle! Not had that trouble on Ovi.

Running 10.5.6 on an early 2008 Blackbook with Safari 3.2.1. Viewing satellite imagery does seem to give lot of work to the processor, my iStat tells me too. Restarting doesn't give any problems.

The IP location works ok for me; centres right above London (although it starts out in Germany or somewhere around there which is a bit disorienting for the first 2 seconds whilst it sorts itself out!)

I'm also having the login issue; it just logs out but stays on Maps :S

P.S. Mac + Firefox support coming too????

I played with maps a bit. When I zoom in under satellite mode I see green and light brown diagonal lines instead of the image, this is the 5th zoom from the last.
Also, I turned on education and other settings from the drop down but I don't see anything in the area.
I am looking at Munich, using safari 4 with the latest leopard updates.

I installed and tried the Safari plugin for Maps 3 but I'd like to get the full Maps 3 experience...

How can I get Maps 3 installed to my Nokia 6210 Navigator using a Mac only?
Does the Map Loader for Mac work with version 3 maps?

OK, here's what I've done and what's happened...
- I downloaded the plugin (OviMaps_1.5.17.0 1.dmg) about 5 days ago and installed into my up-to-date-version of Safari 3 with no problem. I'm running a MacBook Pro Dual Core with 10.5.6.
- Upon opening the page the maps opened in Italy (where I am currently located).
- After signing in there was a quick sequence of URLs flashing by then finally settling on two different URLs, (sometimes the URL ends in ".../servcies/" sometimes in ".../intergrated/").
- And that's where the trouble starts. As soon as I click on favourites, it immediately logs me back out. On one or two occasions it held long enough for me set a couple of favourites, which still appear whenever I can get that far. But most actions anywhere on the map trigger an immediate log out.
- Sometimes, but not always, I get a little pinkish bar that says sorry you have to be logged in.
- I have tried logging in from the Ovi main page, but it doesn't make any difference.
- I then took the opportunity to upgrade to Safari 4 Beta, went through the same process, but with the same results.
- I have since deleted the plugin, then I downloaded a new plugin and noticed that the version was upgraded to "OviMaps_1.5.19.0 1.dmg". Unfortunately the problem remains.
- The only difference is now the maps open on Berlin (before trying to sign in).

Thanks for trying to make this work, and thanks for caring about us Mac users. I'm excited to use it once the bugs are out.

Yeap, the logical point to start Mac integration in this field would have been to create a way to install Maps 3.0b without turning to Windows...Otherwise all this seems a bit wasted.

No issues with installation.
No issues with operation of the maps - pan/zoom/search all work well.

Problem:
- click "Favourites"
- get a "Sign in to OVI" dialog pop-up
- click "Login to Ovi"
- get redirected to Nokia Account login
- enter username/password
- returned to maps.ovi.com/services, but I'm not logged in
- click "Sign in" in header
- appear to be now partially signed in "Good to see you" appears in header
- click "Favourites" and see my favourites pop out
- before I can do anything else the favourites panel disappears and I'm logged out

I installed it and used the admin account/password credentials to install it, but the plug-in still wouldn't work. I had to login with the admin credentials and install it, then login as myself and install it and then it would work until the next boot.

now it all works as expected so far - no more logging-out after pressing "favourites"

10.4.11 has safari 3.2.3 update also, does it work in 10.4?

Hi,

10.5.7 and everything's working.
But... i want to synchronize my maps with my device (N82), so i must have nokia maps 3.0
a) isn't possibile to upgrade to maps 3 from 3 without windows? we are still waiting for ovi for mac!
b) my licenses will still valid with nokia maps 3? how should i manage them?

Likewise, just updated to 10.5.7. Safari 4 Beta. Seems stable. Log-in log-out issue appears to be fixed. Synchronised with Maps 3.0 on my e71 just fine. It's a beautiful thing.

So, on the last version of the plugin (2.0.something), some controlls are using the Ovi bar on the top of the screen. You guys can't do that, Ovi sites have to be consistent in what goes in the bar, and every other site has little icon shortcuts for other ovi services.

Sure you can fit Find Collections and Routes somewhere else.

Safari 4Beta, OSX 10.5.7

One major problem is that maps won;t show route. I add start and end points, but route won't show up no matter what i do. Kinda makes the maps useless :)
When i sync route date with phone, it works fine (on the phone).

Also, there seems to be some visual/funcional glitches, although i can't tell for sure, since i don't know how it is supposed to work.

On a related story - phone app always uses the GPRS, even if i set WIFI as default. Not worrying at home, but it might be the dealbreaker if i want to use it in another country (i'll better rent standalone TomTom, than risk unexpected GPRS charges).

I used Ovi maps for the first time.
I use Safari v 3.2.3. MAC OS 10.5.7

I click on Routing. In the origin A: I enter 201 S. 4th St. San Jose 95112

Ovi maps puts it somewhere in Gulf of Guinea.

Once entered any address, i can't figure out how to edit it except trash it and then re-enter the whole address again.
Its not finding businesses also correctly.
For ex: Enter Namaste Plaza, Sunnyvale CA in Ovi maps and Google maps and you see the difference.

I want Nokia to succeed, but this has completely disappointed me. You need to improve a lot in a quick time.

Any ya, i had installed the plug-in before doing all of the above. Plug-in installation went smoothly.
But one glitch here, i think. It automatically quits Safari without any warning or message.
I think you should give a warning that pls close the safari browser. else if someone is doing another important work in another tab, then that also gets closed along with that.

thanks for your bug report. The issue with the Gulf of Guinea is a known issue with our Safari plug-in, and it's something that should be fixed in one of our upcoming releases.

Improving the performance with Safari is one of our big ticket items at the moment, and we will be releasing some updates soon.

I mapped a cycling route in Ovi Maps, the synced it to my mobile (E75). I did that on a PC and it worked fine. Now when I'm at home using my Mac (OSX 10.4.11, Safari 4.0), Ovi Maps Routing doesn't work. I install the Safari Plugin and it says installation OK, but when I try to get back to the route, Ovi just offers to install the plugin again. I installed it twice and still no luck.

Get these software/coding issues sorted, Nokia. Seriously, if you don't people will just use Google (because Google WORKS)

Just letting you know that I used to be able to create routes fine. But now I get the Gulf of Guinea bug all the time.
I can find a location in "Find Location" but I can't find a location from the Routing tab.
I can create a route via the following method. Go to collections and click on a location and click "Add to Route", then go back to collections and click on a location and click on "Add to Route" - Voila! Now I have a route.

I like this first cut of the Ovi Maps Mac client, but have noticed a bug. If I'm browsing somewhere in the world, and I click on the "Collections" tab, the map automatically goes to the first item in my collections. I don't think it should do this, because I then automatically lose track of what I was looking at before.

Also, the Traffic feature is very nice, however it would be nice if clicking on a traffic segment's start/end markers would show additional info (like when the data was updated, etc...). I realize this one is a feature suggestion and not a bug report. *edit: I see this is already in the Windows version, so I'll just sit tight until you add it to the Mac version*.

All in all quite nice!

I can make routes now!! I can also save them and sync them to my phone!!! Thanks, this is fantastic.
Now I would like to be able to send a route to any phone running Nokia maps and have it come up like a text message, then when you click on it, it automatically opens Maps and opens that route on the phone :)

Just to note, when I go to the maps website for the first time no information or map is there at all, the only thing that shows up is my username. Then I click on "My Account" then click on "Maps" again and then it works.

I can not get an interstate route in Australia to work on Windows or Mac.
I can never get Callington, SA, Australia to Mildura, VIC, Australia to work no matter what I do!
I think that no inter-state routing works because I tried some other interstate destinations, I do a lot of interstate travel. It usually stops with "Calculating Route" showing in grey or it says that route calculating failed.
SOMETIMES local route calculation works.
I went to a Mac and a windows computer which didn't have the maps plug-in installed, hoping that a newer version of the plug-in may fix it. Both computers were the most up-to-date computers, Safari 4 OS 10.5.7, and Vista with Explorer 8. I still could not get a route.

I try to use the web service all the time - I love being able to kynchronise with my phone!

The plugin for Safari installs without problem, but it doesn't show up in Safari's "installed plugins". And when I visit Ovi Maps I get the proposition to install the plugin - routing doesn't work.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 and Safari 4 on a Powerbook G4.

And an other thing: Before I log in, the map show my home town zoomed in; but after logging in the map changes to an Europe view centered over Germany... Why?

The plug in installs without a problem and the Routing works fine, even for long distances! It is very responsive except for 2 things:
1) Zooming is choppy when it auto zooms out after calculating a long route, E.g. Adelaide to Sydney.
2) Adding a location from my favorites to a route pauses for a long time when I first go to do it, all subsequent times work fine. Maybe the favorites could pre-load so I don't have to wait when I am halfway through doing a route?
I only mention those 2 things because you ask in your initial post.

Thanks for working on this and I look forward to using this service when I go on holidays!

It used to work fine for me in 10.5 but now it doesn't even come up in the list of plug ins in 10.6 and it keeps asking me to install the plug in. Also the top right corner of the screen shows I am logged in but when I click on favourites the favourites pane is asking me to log in.

Nokia what the hell is going on?! I've been waiting for months(!) now to get the Maps updater for Mac! This is really starting to annoy me. At least take down the "Mac support coming soon" disclaimer if you don't have any intention of serving to mac users.

Hi nib2000, I gave up and used a windows VM to get Maps installed, as waiting for the Mac version was too painful.
The Maps loader does work once you have installed Maps 3, although it is clunky as all get out.
You download a zip that unpacks into the directory it is in (i.e installs there!). The UI is "pretty" but slow and still does not allow caching of map data (ie you need to re-download it everytime!

If you re-launch Safari in 32-bit mode, by selecting get Info on Safari in the Finder and then enabling 32-bit mode the Ovi Maps plug-in works fine.

The Ovi Maps plug-in needs to be re-written for Safari.

Map Ovi Plug-in will not install. The install procedure completes successfully, but the plugin is not listed in Safari-Help-Installed Plug-ins (although the file is in the Internet Plug-ins folder) and maps.ovi.com will not recognize that it is installed I am using an iMax 27' i7, OS X 10.6.2 and Safari 4.0.4.
