I don't know what's the big difference from fp1 to fp2 that you say makes it impossible to make 4.x for fp1 devices like the n95, but some of the new features of 4.3 are really desirable for us n95 users, so could you please think of backporting 4.3 for fp1?
(and by the way, also hint FW ppl to release FW v31 for the n95-3 soon? :))
Hi MKR10001 and speedgrapher,
Unfortunately, the designers of Share Online took a dependency upon a feature of S60 v3 fp2 back in
version 3.1 of Share Online, and this has meant that no subsequent version can run on v3 fp1 devices.
So, I am sorry to tell you, that Share Online 4.3 will not be available for fp1 devices.
I apologize on behalf of Nokia. In the future, we are going to make a greater effort to make more thoughtful architectural decisions so that we don't automatically exclude existing customers this way.
Thanks,
Larry

To be honest it's a little painful to seen my N95 8Gb capable of running less and less Betalabs project applications as time goes by, but this is progress.
I may have many people dissagreeimg with me, but I would prefer that you didn't "make an effort to make more thoughtful architectural decisions" if these come at the expense of maximising the future capability of the applications. I would rather be excluded and getter a better product in my next phone that be included at my next phone's expense.

Im with you mbrett!
That is a nice to have but unacceptable decision.
My phone is not yet a year old and I paid much more for it than most phones out there.
You want to tell me that Nokia thinks it is not good enough to get your attention? that you want to spend you resources on other, newer phones which you will desert in a year or so?
Nokia treats its owners like suckers. Thanks for buying but oops - it's too old and we don't care enough about giving you new services and improving your experience. Like a used car - once you drove it, it's worth less.
Never mind the fact that Symbian S60 is slow and buggy. The fact that you do not support your faithful fans is just a shame. Time to learn something from Apple - where the iPhone gets better with time, with more features, with new OS releases. I think Nokia should stick with cheap phones for third world countries and spare folks who paid a lot for their phones the grief.
I'm sorry I have to say, I simply don't understand people who thinks nokia's decision on leaving fp1 mobiles unsupported is good. Even BB and windows mobile devices get new software (or new OS versions), but "real machines" like the n95 family gets blown away just because some people prefers to tell Nokia that they'll buy their new phones blindly just to get the new software instead of having some eco considerations and avoiding changing phones every time Nokia comes up with a new model. I mean, I'll change my n95 at some point, but, it's not even 18 months old! It'd be a crime against nature throwing it away so soon! Anyway, there's no real replacement for the n95 yet, so, what I'd have to upgrade to? Some inferior model just because it is fp2 or later?
You have an interesting opinion.
Being a former iPod user I am intreaged by you opinion of the all magnificent Apple products. During a 4 year period my wife baught me two ipods (two years between). I used these during most work days to ease the days. During this 4 year period I ended up with 7 different iPods as I had taken out extended cover on both (for a price). The first died and had to be replaced three times and the second died and had to be replaced three times. During these periods Apple lost my iPods three times. The last time they sent me a new iPod as an appology before finding my original iPod a month later and replacing that. All in all during the 4 year period my iPods spent more than 10% of their lives back at Apple being repaired/replcaed. If this is you opinion of quality you have me bemused. On top of this Apple do provide updates for their iPod models, but never introduce the useful updates as they save these for the next new model (unlike Microsoft with the Zune, who provide major updates to all models (BTW the Zune has better sound quality in my opinion).
When it comes to the iPhone, yes it has a lovely touch screen interface like the Nokia 5800 and the soon to release N97. Yes the iPhon did this first, but when I compared the iPhone with the N95 when it first released functionally it paled into in significance when compared with the N95's functional capabilities. Infact the latest incarnation of the iPhone is still functionally less capable than the N95-1. Have you not noticed the adverts for the iPhone try to sell it based on the fact that 3rd party developers have made 3rd party software for it. Is that really a selling point.
Where is Apple Sports Tracker.Where is Apple Maps. Where is Apple OCR. Where is Apple Mail. Shall I go on.
Betalabs is here to develop new applications for new technologies. I too have an FP3.1 phone in the form of the N95 8Gb, but accept that in the world of electronics this is not forefront technology Nokia have phones running on two newer S60 versions. FP3.2 is not the front runner anymore. the fact they are not back porting these "Experimental" applications to my older S60 version may help avoiding diverting focus from there real goal which is to make my next phone even better. When they do have the time / money and ability to back port some of these applications to my version of S60 I am appreciative as they don't have to do this. I have not yet seen an Apple Betalabs or Samsung Betalabs or LG Betalabs or Sony Erricson Betalabs, etc., etc., etc.

@mbrett, @yuvalz: Sorry I think the flame doesn't belong here.
-----------------------------------------
@mbrett:
Also, I'm sorry you had so much trouble with your iPods, I've never had any with my iPod mini or my 2 iPod touch devices.
I do own an iPod touch so I can tell Apple keeps the iPod touch with the latest available directly from iTunes. I don't have a BB myself but I know they've got upgrades, and the same goes for HTCs and other Windows Mobile devices... In short, everyone gets a longer life than the n95 family! As for the Apple Store, let me tell you there's lots of freeware there. What I don't like from the iPhone/iPod touch, is the fact you can't run anything in the background, though.
The aim of the betalabs is for nokia to define, and for what I've seen & read here, it's got nothing to do with filling your next phone with software that'll make your current one obsolete :)
I appreciate the lively discussion here, it's good -- but let's try to keep calm and avoid the flames?
(I'll also be really happy if some nice pieces are backported to 3.1, but I don't think "they don't have to" -- we're still a lot of s60r3fp1 users around that are not changing their mobiles yet, so I think Nokia has to know about that and consider supporting our mobiles for some more time.)
Appologies if I appeared to be flaming. This was not my intention (although upon re-reading it may not have appeared that way).
I merely intended to respond to yuvalz's post. Maybe I got a little too emotional about it. I used to be an iPod lover, but my experiences with apples, support system were slightly less than poor (not that this has made me bitter adn tristed or anything, as you can see in my previous post). The iPod 3rd Gen upto the iPod Photo failed a lot, lets say. I will admit that my iPod Video has been better behaved, but anyway.
I originally intended to make the point that Nokia have upgraded the N95 8Gb Firmware a number of times in the past year, although I asmit that you have to have the right "product code" to make the most of this. From what you say Apple are a lot better at this than they have been on previous models as it used to be common knowledge that any useful upgrades to iPods used to be saved for the next model and were never made available to existinmg models. It is nice to know this has changed as this was another main reason why I left the iPod brand behind.
I do not disagree that there are many freeware applications in the Apple Store, but if the best thing a hardware manufacturer can come up with the advertise there product is how many applications are available for it, to me, this is not good. Nokia have the ability to advertise their product in the form of the N95 8Gb as a functionally better product with a number of both freeware and paid for apps in their Software Market and soon to be OVI Store.
I will admit that it frustrates me that people crowd around the Apple iPhone because it looks pretty. At the end of the day Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but functionality is undeniable. Other than the touch screen on the iPod the N95 is a better phone in every other way.
Appologies I may have done it again. Appologies. Tried to keep it more observational and less emotional this time.
What I am trying to say is that a change from say FP1 to FP2 for the N95 8Gb, in my opinion, would not be provided by other manufacturers, which is something that people have complained about in the past. I would love for backporting to be done, but not at the detrement of the product for future phones.

Unfortunately FP1 supported softwares are getting less and less here in betalabs. BTW many of the new ideas and applications are going to develop touch screen devices since 5800 is released.
Im sure FP1 devices are capable of running every new software but when u dont programming based on FP1 features so there will be incompatibility.
i hope guys in betalabs wont forget we FP1 users.
I still love my N82 and i still prefer it to any new FP2 device! Im not gonna change my phone in anyways.;)
hi, that's fair enough, to be honest i only want it so i can get rid of the icon on the stand by screen. i don't use personally because i don't take that many photos that would be worth showing to people. if there's anyway the developers can make something to install on FP1 that will remove or allow one to remove the icon on the stand by screen, that would be great
thanks
Maybe if we got more support for this they would add support for fp1 just like with the Here and Now. It was the same with that app. First it was launched for fp2. Then when people started asking about fp1 first they said there isn't going to be fp1 support since it's dependency upon a feature of S60 v3 fp2 (just like with share here) . Then as more and more people started asking about fp1 they said they'll see but no promise can be made so that finally after a lot people giving the voice for this they made it. Maybe we should do the same for this one too.
