Last night I went for an 18k run and after 1hr 50min my phone died. When I started the phone had full bars. My phone battery is a new one and is less than 2 months old. I can't remember previuos versions of NST killing my battery quite so fast, and this was with power save mode on, so no lap bleeps.

For roundness of this discussion, my e61's battery performance seems to have been bettered with the upgrade to NST v2.05.
I headed out on my Sunday's long run looking for differences due to the upgrade, your comments on battery drain were on the forefront.
That run was over 24km at 2:31:34. Version 1.78 would normally take away one to two bars on the battery meter for a workout of such a duration. Version 2.05 took none! I had a full compliment of battery bars showing after my workout. This observation reflected similarly throughout a number of test workouts over the last couple days.
So... For my experiences on a 30mo old e61, using an external BT GPS appliance, I'm getting better battery performances.

Is this an issue with the use of internal GPS then?
Quite blatent that either bluetooth connection uses rediculously less battery than GPS , or the N95 battery is useless, or the e61 battery performance is amazing.

In fact, my 1500 mAh battery will not make it through an entire day without a refilling. This battery is really tired. I can't wait for delivery of my new phone.
Bluetooth doesn't seem to draw on the battery as much as I read about. Sometimes I forget to turn off Bluetooth when tethered to my Mac via the Multi Media Transfer Tool and the connection remains active for hours. No excess battery draining detected.
Active GPRS, UTMS, HSDPA, etc. connections take a serious chunk of battery life in my experiences. I noticed your workouts recently have been broadcast "Live" in NST. Perhaps you should try running without a network connection and compare the power pull.

Hi,
My regular Sunday morning runs are between 24KM (2 hrs) and 35KM (3 hrs) and I use my N95-1 with NST 1.83 and the internal GPS, I normally charge the phone fully and cold boot the phone before starting, the phone normally drops from a full charge to 2-3 bars left (admittedly I've never used the powersave option).
I also used to share my runs live for the same reason but the Sunday runs are across the North Downs and coverage disappears after about 5KM so I don't bother anymore, I also only use GSM to maximise battery life in general use.
I still had at least a bar left after tracking for 03:35 in the 2008 Dublin Marathon!
I upgraded to NST 2.05 on Friday and switched the powersave option on with a 60 second timeout. I ran 16K (75 mins) last night (again after a full charge) and the phone is still displaying all its bars.
I'll be doing a 35KM run on Sunday (around 3 hours) - I'll keep you posted on battery life (unless v2.06 has been released beforehand and changes the game).

And did you have the auto lap feature on and set to 500m?
Just want to check for as many similarities as possible. I must admit my phone is set to "Dual Mode", thus using both GSM and 3G when available. As you can see in my initial post I am getting nothing like the battery life that you are.

No, I don't live share anymore mainly because of power consumption and network coverage issues. That said, I have only just been able to update the phone from Orange's v13 fimrware which had none of the power saving features that were introduced in v20 onwards.
I'll try to compare 2 identical runs either 2 x 8.5 mile or 2 x 4.25 mile runs, both with 1 mile laps and powersaving on (60 seconds timeout) but the other with network set to both and live sharing on.
Won't be doing it on Sunday though, 22 miles or thereabouts...
I'll split my run up on Wednesday evening to try a few different configurations too maybe. I've contacted the NST Team via the Fan Group asking for any configuration suggestions. I'll see what they say.

22 miles sounds pretty painful. My max at the mo. is 18km. Only started back running at the end of January after 12 years off.

Doing the London Marathon in 5 weeks, so the Sunday morning trail run has become pretty important.
I run with a group that does a 15 mile loop across the downs pretty much every Sunday of the year depending on races, the number varies between 3-4 and 10-12.

I forgot to mention that the single largest battery drain comes from any application which actively searches for new connections or access points. Loads of RAM.
This includes the native tools and any app which may be running in the background.
HandyWi and WeFi are two very good apps for WiFi access point discovery, however they drain my battery so heavily I cannot use them actively. Sometimes an app can run in the background without showing itself as active. Double check ALL your apps so that you know exactly which ones might be running automatically when you restart the phone.
Since you're probably using other beta apps, installing-testing-removing-etc, I recommend using an app like Tasky to monitor your running processes. That way you can more effectively trace RAM hogs, finding your way to a more energy efficient configuration.

...any other free wifi access point that you can use in places like McDonalds or O'Briens.
I found that if I define an access point for these, use them, switch off Wifi scanning and then move out of range they constantly try to re-establish a connection (twice a minute for about 5-10 seconds at a time).
This has several effects:
1) wiping out the battery after a few hours
2) Wiping out your call logs
Doesn't happen if you just use the connection via wifi scanning
Tasky seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. I can't find it anywhere. I use JBakTaskMan (another freware task manager for S60 3rd Edition), which replaces the Nkoia default Task Manager.
Never use Wan Scan and only have home WiFi network set up.

I ran the three runs back to back (no powering up phone between). Just stopped to change settings and set up for next run.

Bewildered. Nokia battery power is a little wierd though pyBattery shows 100% until the phone drops 1 bar at which point pBattery shows 85%.

but then again, it connects to a small antennae orbiting the planet.
I have found, even though I have a 1.5K battery and internal GPS in my E71, that I like to bring my good ol blue tooth GPS receiver LD-3W along for longer hikes and the all-day bike trips. so I can listen to music, use GPS and never need to even think about the battery.
The blue tooth drains WAY less power than the GPS, and It makes a huge difference. It's as though I had second battery in my handset.
If you are like me, and like to spend full days on bike, I really recommend you get an external GPS.
For those who might think of doing so, here's what I have found:
If you use AGPS and e71 internal GPS receiver, set the AGPS server to supl.nokia.com
If you use AGPS and LD-3W in e71, set the server to h-slp.mnc007.mcc240.pub.3gppnetwork.org
This works for me. I have no idea why.
I have to say I noticed the my battery drained a lot faster than usual when I was out for nearly 2hrs on the bike on Monday.
I had full-1 bar and when I finished I had only 2 bars left.
I upgraded to 2.05 just before I left.
I won't get a chance to try again until early next week but to me it seems to be definitely draining more juice.
On a side note, does GPS filtering affect battery life? I'd assume High filtering would use more than having it off?
I wouldn't advise turning it off at all. You need it on and on high to get rid of spruious spikes and make the data recorded more useable.

As far as GPS filtering affecting battery life, its processes will add to the RAM load but it should be rather small.
One of the lead developers told me some time ago a brief explanation of the GPS filtering feature. I had mistakingly assumed that it functioned by changing the recording intervals to more or less frequent based on High or Low settings. Not true.
Its a simple algorithm which smoothes spikes as mbrett points out above.
Having it set to High, Low or Off, the mobile app still records the same one (1) second intervals. Power consumption should not change much, if at all, regardless of the setting you choose.

I should add that I haven't been able to prove the effectiveness of GPS filtering.
I've tried all the settings on the same route in similar weather conditions and I can't see a measurable difference for any of them.
Furthermore, I often sift through other publicly available workouts from other users looking for a workout profile which has some obvious output which is better than average.
For the life of me, I cannot find a workout without the same erratic spikes.

First run for me in a week in the morning, heavy cold and sore throat, glad its now rather than 2 weeks time.
22 miles will be my last long slow run before I taper, 15 next Sunday, 10 the week after and then FLM the week after that (with a few other runs in between).

Yesterday i run 1 1/2 hours (16km) with my N95-1. Battery was fully charged. When i returned the battery indicator still showed all bars. I've NST v2.06 and use the internal GPS. So no problem here with battery consumption. I think it's also better with the new version (from v2.05).

Horrible 22 mile run, last really long one before FLM, 3:05 and 1 bar gone even with the Nokia Push E-mail client running.
Well done to the research time for all their hard work on power consumption.

As I reported earlier I used the "share live" option last time and the battery was out after 30min.
This time I just had NSt 2.06 on on my N82 and I was listening to mp3 simultanously in the background and it worked perefctly! There was not even on dot of battery missing after 52 minutes of running.

I just thought I'd share my latest "ultra-test" for battery performance.
Almost four hour workout, listening to music at 60-70% the entire time.
Began with a fresh charge.
No Live sharing, powersave on, and I must have checked my progress at least 40 to 60 times (checking naturally activates backlight.).
End of workout saw a 50% reduction in charge. Pretty good.
I also took 4 calls which previously, on my E61, would have killed the battery almost instantly.

Power Save mode is default on. It can be turned on and off from within the workout. Once you have selected start ona workout if you go into Options you should see a Power Save sub menu in the list.
