Why use Google Maps on the website and the Nokia Maps on the phone

Why this disparity?
Nokia uses different maps for Nokia Maps, another set for Sports Tracker / Friends View and the Sports Tracker website uses google maps.
Makes any sense?

It has been requested a lot of time, but please use the same set of maps for Nokia Maps and the other Nokia apps. Why does sports tracker have to store a separate copy of the maps in its own folder on the phone.

Please come up with a central caching for the maps, which can be used by any of Nokia's apps. That would make more sense.

We've discussed this quite a bit in the past with no answers from the NST team.

Why use the GoogleMaps API on the ST website which uses Nokia's Navteq competitor, Tele Atlas?

The only logic I can apply suggests it must have something to do with an old business arrangement/commitment.

If SportsTracker would use a mapping API outside of their own Navteq brand, then I would hope for something along the lines of a community edited OpenStreetMap and not Google's.

Maybe it's just me but, . . .

The maps site does state "Powerd by Google" in the left hand bottom corner of the maps, but in the bottom right hand corner it states "Map Data (c)2009 TeleAtlas" whic is the same maps used by Nokia Maps 2.x (Uses both TeleAtlas and Navteq). So maybe they aren't that different after all (same map data , just utilising google's mapping APIs). Comments?

Sports tracker on my phone is Navteq, and the maps don't have all of the roads in my town on it, I'm rural. Google uses 'MapData Sciences' which has all of the roads in my town on it.
For Australia at least they are two different sets of maps... However that is just 'down under'

Good morning.

The brands of map data and map APIs are a bit confusing. Each map APIs incorporates unique and/or collection of different map data resources. The Google API seems to use the most comprehensive data variety of all those available, the largest of the bunch being Tele Atlas.

Using Google as an example, scan the globe at different resolution (altitude) levels and you'll notice many data providers. The same can be seen with Microsoft's API. OpenStreetMap starts off with basic available map data and gets the community involved in editing. CloudeMade has yet another interesting API.

Nokia Maps, which I use quite frequently and regrettably haven't spent any time in its forum, is most confusing to me only in their use of both Navteq and Tele Atlas copyrighted material. Not only because they are direct competitors, but that Nokia actually acquired Navteq.

Tele Atlas made a five year deal with Google last year to provide map data. In a way, does this not make Google and Nokia actually competitors?
