I had a friend who wanted to know how to get from the University to my house by bike. It is a long and quite complicated bike trip, one will have to know exactly where to get on the various bike roads, or he will be lost. Been there, done that!
We both have a S60 phone, and I have the route on my phone, but there was no simple way to send it to another handset.
I would have appreciated if I could select and send a route as I can do with a photo or a sound file.
I used this option for the "Track a Heart" contest Nokia did in February. I realize it's NOT the idea you're suggesting, but until then, it works. Take a snapshot of a KML overlay in Google Maps and transfer it to your mobile via Bluetooth. Then you can zoom in and pan around the image.
There's a thread titled "Bi-directional synching of routes" which discusses the subject you're raising. I would love to see something like this very soon. In fact, I can't figure out why we don't have it already in light of Nokia's obvious interest in location based services.
