This could be done in conjunction with targets but maybe have some form of speech announements of speed, distance etc so you do not have to look at the phone.
To take it a bit further you could have a sergeant major type voice shouting at you if you are falling behind. "Move your lazy butt" etc etc. Voices and commands could be shared online.

If I was really silly I could share my journey home with the wife so she could track me. whenever I go near a pub she could type into the NST websire "keep walking". This would then come out of my phone. The possibilities are endless and often undesirable.
