“Conversation” application launched at Nokia Beta Labs

conversation.PNG

Beloved beta users,

Let me introduce the latest gem of Nokia Beta Labs: Conversation, a neat little messaging app that allows you to follow your conversations, organized by individual contacts. In short, the app provides the long-awaited threaded SMS functionality for S60 - see requests here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, etc.

Try it out, and give your feedback to the development team!

Download here.

After installation, the application will appear in two places:
1) in application grid
2) as a new tab in your Contacts application

How do you like it? Will you take it into daily use? Would you recommend it to a friend? What did you like, and what did you hate? How could we improve it?

Write your thoughts either (a) to the feedback form or (b) to the comments section of this post. Everything goes directly and unfiltered to the R&D team.

Note: this is a standalone application, and therefore won’t be integrated into S60 platform in its current form. However, your feedback goes also directly to the team who is working to improve the overall S60 messaging experience - including the actual messaging app. Any improvement suggestions welcome!

  1. Link fixed now. Sorry. Shouldn’t write in hurry… Thanks Horia, regul8or, Hugo, and Johannes (I removed your dead-link comments, because I want this page to look cleaner as the R&D team is reading and referring to your feedback. Hope you understand.)

  2. Will be available also for N95?

    Comment by uamadei — September 21, 2007 @ 12:39 pm

  3. Yes, as the page says. Works perfectly on my N95.

    Comment by Tommi Vilkamo — September 21, 2007 @ 1:09 pm

  4. Installed it to my 6120 C. Seems to work ok.

I like it already! Very handy to use and the space to write replies reduces the clicks needed to write an answer.

  5. My comparative analysis of this application versus the built in SMS application on the Palm Treo, the iPhone and a Windows Mobile application called Textr can be found here: http://www.intomobile.com/2007/09/21/conversation-beta-nokia-is-finally-integrating-threaded-messaging-into-s60.html

    Great job developers!

  6. I’m not able to install ‘Nokia Contacts Services Support Package’ on my e50. It says that the installation is unsupported…

    Comment by Christian — September 21, 2007 @ 2:04 pm

  7. On my E61i (latest = first firmware) it exists on the main screen after i click “open” the message. Too bad, I’ll remove the app.

    Comment by horia stanescu — September 21, 2007 @ 2:06 pm

  8. Sorry Tommi, promised to test.. Seems to work fine on E51. Hopefully this is used as a basis for future S60 UI work.

    Couple of technical nitpicks:
    - why separate versions for 3.0 and 3.1
    - why too SIS packages

    Comment by Jukka Eklund — September 21, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

  9. sorry guys, my vault. Now it works. At first I tried to install it directly with the phonebrowser from your webpage. That don’t work. No problem at all if you download it via pc and send it over to your cellphone via bluetooth. Nice app by the way. Will test it…

    Comment by Christian — September 21, 2007 @ 2:13 pm

  10. Cristian: the app requires a relatively new S60 software branch to run on. That’s why we didn’t include some S60 3rd edition devices, and recommended updating the software.

Have you updated your SW lately?www.nokia.com/softwareupdate

You can check the SW version and date by typing *#000# on idle screen.

Horia: there were some known issues with Eseries devices. It wasn’t tested with E61i, so thanks for telling.

  11. Really cool app! Work fine on N95 at first sight.
I think, it must be integrated into S60.

But may be more better place for such tab is in Messages app, not in Contacts?

    Comment by Samokhin Viktor — September 21, 2007 @ 2:34 pm

  12. I love the concept, and the application integrates nicely into the phone.

IT crashes every time I open a Text msg on my E61.

    Comment by mrcreativity — September 21, 2007 @ 2:34 pm

  13. I would recommend adding an option, allowing you to change the order of the conversations for each contact, so you can have newest txts first, rather than last. It is how Gmail does it and what most people are use to.

Other than that - nice little app - good job guys and congrats on the promotion and stuff ;)

    Comment by Rupert P — September 21, 2007 @ 2:36 pm

  14. Hi Tommi. I was just about to put exactly the same problems that Stefan Constantinescu writes in his review. So just +1 to all of Stefan annoys. The big font problem is really a problem in the whole OS as you use the standard api to show messages. I know there’s lot of devices with ~2″ screen sizes, but the font size in contact list or this message thread view is huge… So just to other team there at nokia/s60 please, where ever in the os add an option to change systems font sizes. Perhaps one smaller one and also, why not, a bigger one for people with visibility problems.

    Comment by Sirul — September 21, 2007 @ 2:41 pm

  15. Works fine with my N95.As viktor said the option should be included in the messages app and not contacts. Also is it necessary that i should have sent messages enabled to have my replies recorded?

    Comment by Ravi Shanker — September 21, 2007 @ 2:42 pm

  16. I’m also a E50 owner. I was pleased to know about the availability of this software but unfortunately I’m still running the stock 6.41.3.0 firmware and don’t want to update since the new one is plagued with a HUGE bug.

I only hope Nokia will release a bug fix for their last E50 firmware, otherwise it will be no Conversation for me (I installed it but it doesn’t work, unable to run it) :-(
Cristian: What’s your firmware version please ?

    Comment by hermes — September 21, 2007 @ 2:46 pm

  17. Just installed it, i recommend it to all users. Really nice stuff.

I just wish it would run faster on my N95, it feels a bit sluggish.

Personally, i’d prefer to use it on my messages tab, too.

    Comment by Denis — September 21, 2007 @ 2:49 pm

  18. Installing it! installing it!

very nice of you to keep doing this kind of apps and hearing the public!

Maybe S60 should advertise more this kind of things, like sending a message to registered users sayig soething like “go there to get more software” etc…

    Thanks

    Comment by Alexandr3 — September 21, 2007 @ 2:49 pm

  19. It is so great to finally have a native Nokia client for threaded sms!!! I do have a a concern though and this pertains to some of the apps on the BetaLabs site. Is it necessary to keep reinstaling the Nokia Contacts Services Support Package?

    Comment by Darla — September 21, 2007 @ 3:05 pm

  20. Some on these are already addressed by Stefan, but here are my first thoughts (they might result other problems):

-Make the texts smaller like it’s possible in normal messages view
    - It forgets what you have written in bottom of the screen, if you check the last message
-Could the messages writing area expand as you write to example 4 rows?
-Clicking draft could open write field straight
-Neglect this number from conversatio -option and show neglected. For example I have messages from security systems, bank account information etc.
-Time of last message straight in first view after number of messages (atleast if not in mode on my first suggestion)
-Start new conversation from this message -> hide older/show older

I have to admit I haven’t tested this app very throughly, but at first glance I didn’t find these features…

    Comment by Heikki — September 21, 2007 @ 3:20 pm

  21. > Is it necessary to keep reinstaling the
    > Nokia Contacts Services Support Package?

No it’s not. It’s the same package as Gizmo is using.

Maybe we should have said it in the web page…

    Comment by Tommi Vilkamo — September 21, 2007 @ 3:27 pm

  22. 1. Reading Text:
I experienced same as horia stanescu above. On my E61i, whenever I try to open a messag, the app exists. However, its nice that the text message scrolls of its own accord, so I can actually read without opening each message.

    2. Sending Text:
Sending works fine. I simply typed in the text field and sent.

    3. Adding Contact Icon:
Adding contact icons worked without flaw

    Comment by Yomi — September 21, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

  23. Awesome awesome awesome!

But yeah, I agree with stefan, it needs smaller fonts, a way to fit more conversations at one screen, and a better way to distinguish between sent and received messages.

    Comment by Fernando — September 21, 2007 @ 3:36 pm

  24. Will definitely download it later - just from looking at the screenshot of the Conversation View, my initial impression is that it uses a comparatively large amount of screen real-estate for the icon, the date, and the empty space that follows from the “standard” S60 list types.

Perhaps using a list with custom cell layout to show more text and less date in one line (e.g. two wrapped lines of text, and just time/day or date of the last message below the icon) would be more appropriate, even if it slightly stretches the strict interpretation of the S60 Style Guide.

The goal should be that the need for actually opening a messages in an ongoing conversation should be minimized, to be as close as possible to “chat” experience.

Perhaps the visual cues for sent/received messages (left/right justifcation?) could be made a bit stronger than they probably are right now.

    Comment by Marcus Groeber — September 21, 2007 @ 3:55 pm

  25. Cool app and very nice for everyday use. Everything seems to work fine on my E61 BUT, the application shuts down every time I try to open a message.

  27. Installed and working fine on N95, N76 and E61i.

    Comment by Darla — September 21, 2007 @ 4:26 pm

  28. This works really well, and does what it says on the tin.

It’s not quite perfect though, and there’s a few changes I’d recommend.

    1) Install to a new tab in the Messaging app, rather than the Contacts App. Ideally I’d see it being an alternative/replacement SMS inbox.
    2) Use more screen real estate and a smaller font to show each message in its entirety, rather than just the first line.

    Other than that, excellent.

    Comment by Owen — September 21, 2007 @ 4:32 pm

  29. Unfortunately does not work on my N80 with firmware version 4.0623.41. Just does nothing, even though I rebooted after installing it, just in case. Real pity.

    Comment by Jay — September 21, 2007 @ 4:55 pm

  30. Does Nokia totally not support S60 2nd Edition anymore? I mean, my 2nd Edition is not -THAT- old. Come on!

    Comment by Neil — September 21, 2007 @ 5:16 pm

  31. Jay: Exactly like I said before. Doesn’t work on my E50 either due to an “old but less buggy” firmware.

    A pity indeed.

    Comment by hermes — September 21, 2007 @ 5:16 pm

  32. The application is horrible. You can’t even ready full messages all at once. Have a look at
    http://www.symbianwave.com/product.php?id=smschat_s60

Symbian Wave’s SMS Chat program has is right…

    Comment by James — September 21, 2007 @ 5:20 pm

  33. I’m in Singapore, and sms from telcos might prefix the country code in front of the sender number (depending on whether you’re on the same telco as the other person). Thus recipients I choose from the phonebook and sms that I reply to are grouped under ‘recipient name’ and ‘+(country code)(phone number)’ instead of just 1.

    Comment by acidz — September 21, 2007 @ 5:37 pm

  34. Nice application. Works fine on the E90 on the external and the internal screen.

    Comment by Olaf — September 21, 2007 @ 5:46 pm

  35. WEll, this is what i have as a feedback for you guys.

    1) The font issue. It’s not only “converstions” problem. Multimedia computers should have more custom fonts, and font sizes, not just like FP1 phones have.

    2) Bigger diference between sent and received messages

    3) Some strings weren’t translated

    4) An alphabetically sort option.

    5) Now a bug, I tried to delete a message and it kept displaying the “deleting messages” pop up but nothing happened. I hit red button and went to that screen again, and the message was still there.

    That’s it for now

PS- I’d like to see some kind of option that allows me to go to the program whenever i receive a new message. Like if it was the default message inbox view.

    Comment by Alexandr3 — September 21, 2007 @ 5:50 pm

  36. It does generally look like a good program. My suggestions for improvement are similar to those that others have given: it definitely needs stronger cues as to which message was sent by which user, and being able to see the whole message would be beneficial (probably best as an toggleable option to expand messages).

    Comment by Christopher — September 21, 2007 @ 5:56 pm

  37. Does nothing on my American E70-2, latest firmware. App just sits there, doesn’t launch. No extra tab in Contacts. *sigh*

    Comment by Noah — September 21, 2007 @ 5:59 pm

  38. My E61i also crashes when i try and “open” a message…

    Comment by Gabriele — September 21, 2007 @ 6:20 pm

  39. WOW… and now I cannot delete the messages: I only get an eternal “deleting messages” box!! Nokia Beta Labs: go and hide yourself!! :-((

    Comment by Gabriele — September 21, 2007 @ 6:33 pm

  40. @gabriele
Remove the application and then restart the E61i , all ahould be fine by now. I’m sure that in a few days we’ll have a compatible version.

    Comment by horia stanescu — September 21, 2007 @ 6:42 pm

  41. I have the same comment as Jukka. Why separate 3.0 and 3.1. I just downloaded 3.0 version and install it on 3.1 device (N95) and it works fine.

I thought Nokia has promised binary compatibility after 3.0 release (at least you mention it a couple of months back in your blog).

    Comment by Antony Pranata — September 21, 2007 @ 7:07 pm

  42. To Hermes: my E50 has the latest firmware I think: 07.13.0.0 from 26-04-2007 RM-170.

From which huge bug are you speaking? The only bug I notice is that if you speak with someone about ca 30-45min the phone makes a reset. I think this is also a huge bug. :)
    Greets,
    Christian

    Comment by Christian — September 21, 2007 @ 7:12 pm

  43. Gabriele, I was able to delete the messages from the threaded sms window without a problem (using n93). I haven’t tried sending and receiving messages yet so I’ll post again if theres anything wrong on my end.

I agree with Owen on installing the app in the messaging box instead of the contact.

    Comment by Dee — September 21, 2007 @ 7:32 pm

  44. Pretty nice app indeed.

But, this application should have full message (conversation) view like Symbianwave’s (SMSChat)app does.

    Comment by Sim — September 21, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

  45. Hi Tommi,
is it compatible with E65? It is not mentioned in the download page.

    Comment by Luís Marques — September 21, 2007 @ 8:36 pm

  46. Thanks for your replies! :-)
The only way I could delete messages was moving them form the internal memory to the memory card (without copying them) and vice-versa.

Another bug: it seems to be in conflict with the “blog entry” function of the Nokia Web Server, since I get a “blog entry closed aplication” or stuff when I switch on the phone…

    Comment by Gabriele — September 21, 2007 @ 8:51 pm

  47. Christian: I have the firmware version 06.41.3.0 on RM-171. Many people are complaining about a bug which affect the display of the name of a caller or sms sender; eg: depending on the way you store a number, with or without the international prefix, the name of a caller will be displayed but only is phone number if that same person sends an sms, or vice versa (only number while receiving a call but name in messaging app).

Don’t you have that bug ? If not were do you live (how long are the numbers in your country, with and without prefix) ?

That bug is a showstopper for me, and since there’s no fix from Nokia, it seems I cannot use Conversation either…:-(

    Comment by Hermes — September 21, 2007 @ 10:19 pm

  48. Just another “crashes when trying to open a message on E61 with latest firmware” data point.

    Comment by kriegspiel — September 22, 2007 @ 12:11 am

  49. Great app! Though I’m afraid I’ll have to join the “crashes-when-attempting-to-open-message” bandwagon:). And yeah I’m using the E61 with the latest firmware.

    Comment by John — September 22, 2007 @ 12:40 am

  50. Great beta app guys. Right idea, just a few tweaks:

    1. Fonts (guess u heard this already)
    2. Deleting messages. I think this occurs on my N73 when I delete a message in the usual ‘inbox’ then open the Conversations app. The deleted message appears but cannot be deleted again from the Conversations app.
    3. Sound this really be a Contacts app,, or can it replace the inbox? Not sure about this one, but it is something to consider.

But seriously, Way To Go. You guys are listening, and that is great. What an A1 community we make.

    Comment by Mark G — September 22, 2007 @ 3:13 am

  51. Also a Palm user who loves threaded sms, this is one i was really looking forward to using on my e61i.. I am a heavy texter with lots of contacts (350)..

Tried this, installed it.. Huge hit on performance of my e61i.. I have around 350 contacts and opening the address book takes longer.. selecting the Conversations tab or via the installations menu it takes a long time to load the conversations.. for a heavy texter with lots of contacts, i found this to be cumbersome..

it has also crashed my phonebook a few times telling me i dont have enough memory when it is the only app that is open and i dont have a lot of apps installed on my phone, most apps I install on my memory card..

    other suggestions would be:
    - make the font a little smaller as it is a big too big..
    - maybe word wrap rather than scrolling..
    - rather than integrating to the Contacts app (being a tab there), maybe integrate to the Messaging app (a tab here instead)..

i have uninstalled it for now and will wait for an updated version when hopefully it works better with my e61i (looks like i am not the only one having trouble with it on the e61i)..

    Comment by pandresmedeiros — September 22, 2007 @ 5:01 am

  53. Noah: I also have E70-2 US version, and the application will not launch. I do have latest firmware, but in my case it is v.2 … while owners of European version of E70 already have v.3 firmware as I have read in other forums. Why are we left behind??

Otherwise I like the idea. I owned Treo 650 before and loved their SMS app.

    Comment by Samy — September 22, 2007 @ 6:09 am

  54. hi luis marques,
Why would you want this app on the e65 when it has already the version of teamsuite that has the communications log feature. I sure hope the development team is talking to the guys working on the e65 teamsuite.
Come to think of it, this app would be a better fit as a tab in contacts, if it resembled the communications log more in features and functions. In its current form, i feel it would fit better in the messaging app, as many people have already mentioned here.
    Cheers

    - the layout of the chat needs to be worked out so that it will look nicer. ex:smschat, PALM treo built in thread sms
    - i cannot read my previous chat FULLY, cause the space is not enough [yet]
    - Smileys Support
    - Should be A built in application on the next symbian phones!!!

    * It exits if I try to open a message
    * I cannot open a contact

So, I’ve unistalled it and I’ll wait for an update.

I think its Ok to have it as a tab in contacts (I’m checking the messages with a contact, so it’s the natural place)

  60. It crashes on my n80ie with the newest firmware. It does open, but when I press left and right, it goes ‘out of memory’. I tried to reboot, but it didn’t work.

A shame though, I kinda liked the idea.

    Comment by MOC — September 22, 2007 @ 9:56 pm

  61. Very nice application, I’d like it to be a part of the standard S60 package in the future.
    Things I liked:
-> threading - received and sent msgs regarding the contact located in one place
-> possibility to write a reply right away
-> indication of the type of msg - received sent

    Minor bugs to work on:
-> If I write a reply, using the pencil (quick reply functionality), the message in the regullar messaging application is being saved without the contact name - just the number. (when the reply functionality of conversations is used, the message is saved in the regular messaging app in the proper way)

    Proposed changes:
-> better indication of sent and received messages in the thread. I liked the idea of green and blue arrows on the yellow envelope, but maybe the whole envelope could be of green or blue colour? It would be clearer that way
-> indication of the undelivered messages (based on delivery reports)

On the whole the app is great and I simply love the idea of Nokia Beta Labs. I believe it’s a very smart move, if properly used might lead to great market success.

    N73, latest os version.

  62. Very useful for short text message exchanges, but please don’t stop there! (How do you compare with Textr?)

I would like to see such capabilities interoperate with mobile voice interfaces, including:

    - Speech message input and speech recognition for retrieval

    - Speech commands for retrieval

    - Text-to speech retrieval options

    - Enable message delivery from business process applications (automated, not just people contacts)

    - In general, make it part of the Unified Communication/Unified Messaging world.

I am sure you are thinking along these lines anyway, but I would like you to lay out directions for this technology, not a just a big surprise!

If you are in agreement, let me know and I will be glad to write this up in my column.

    Respectfully,

  65. Have not tried it yet, but based on the pics alone, I wonder do users really want to see the time the message was sent down to the second for every single message in history? :) I for one would be much happier if showing the time and date was optional and by removing them one could see more of the message.

  66. Crashes every time when trying to open a message (Nokia E51).

    Comment by Jukka Eklund — September 23, 2007 @ 8:11 pm

  67. First looked fine as I already sent through email form, but now experiencing a major problem:

I don’t get notified of new SMS anymore! By coincidence I noticed this when opening the inbox yesterday to look something up - I had 4 new messages, but no notification/indicator was shown at all, the same happened this morning with anothzer new message.

Deinstalled the app, hopefully everything works now. Otherwise the app looked great as a beta, but that bug is an absolute no-go for me (and I assume it has something to do with Conversations - consuming some kind of notification event - because that’s the only thing I changed when this problem started to appear).

Using N73, firmware 4.0726.2.0.1 (don’t even get me started on this firmware…).

    Comment by jennifr — September 24, 2007 @ 9:03 am

  68. This is definitely a good start! Hopefully it can be integrated into the OS in the future. It’s useful when I’m having a back and forth conversation with the person. If its just casual texting though I wish it was integrated. I only have my last 10 sent messages saved, so my sent texts in the convo disappear once they get bumped out of the last 10.

    Comment by Joseph Jison — September 24, 2007 @ 9:06 am

  69. Hmm…deinstalling Conversations did not solve the problem, removing the Contacts Services Support didn’t solve it, but then I restarted the phone and now it works again, I get SMS notifications like before. So I can’t say for sure, but I think one of the two components caused the problem for me, maybe you can look into that.

  70. Conversations works just fine on a N73ME with 4.0272.2.2.1, so jennifr, perhaps try updating the firmware. I think it’s worth it, as the app really nice and useful.

  71. On behalf of the Conversation Development Team, thank you for all the feedback you have sent both to this blog and to Betalabs mailbox.

We want to give our respond to some of the features and errors related to application you have reported:

    1) Non compatible issues: There are some challenges with certain devices and software versions. Usually it is a good idea to upgrade the software to latest version using Nokia Software updater. Remember first to create a backup of course.
The non compatible issues are related to some changes to platform. The change allows creating these extension applications as Conversation and Gizmo. For example Nokia 5500 and some other older S60 3.0 devices can not be supported.

    2) UI and fonts: We tried to create similar user experience as with other messaging. So that’s why we do not have any smiles etc. Also we have to use the system fonts.

    3) Integration to message center: Not supported in the current platform versions, so only way to provide the functionality integrated to phone UI is to utilize the Contacts.

    4) Search conversation: The search box is already used for reply box, so search functionality can not be implemented in the screen. But you can change the sorting behaviour in Settings from Time to Name based.

    5) Cyrillic support: Sorry, no plans to support Cyrillic characters. But keep sending feedback and we will try to affect this internally.

    6) E-Series devices: We have not tested the application with E-series devices. We will try to provide a better working installation file for E90 and E51 users in the future.

Also tip for all the users. Remember increase the number of stored messages from Messaging settings to create better conversation experience. By default outbox size is 20 messages. Messaging > Options > Settings > Other > No. of saved msgs.

Why cannot you achieve it? Yahoo! Go 1 had it and so does Windows Live Suite for Nokia. You are Nokia, shouldn’t you be able to do it?

    My suggestion -

    1. Can the “X Message Received” dialog on the Standby screen directly open up the Conversation windows if you choose to?

  73. Is it possible to add T9 contact search to the contacts tab of the application? You know, the one Windows Mobile devices use, where you type 2539 and it filters out contacts that start with ALEX or AJEX or any other combination of letters from 2539 and/or have 2539 in the phone number? I’m sure this’d make a lot of people happy and the app would be used simply to place calls too :)

  74. @Samy, I have no idea. Half the time you can’t even find the E70 on the Nokia USA websites — my father-in-law was in the market for a Nokia and tried looking it up to no avail.

I’d love to hear if the new v3.x firmware for the E70 works with this app, tho.

  75. Regarding the search functionality - no 5.

How about implementing the contact search within the conversation main screen (by just typing the words - like in regular contacts) there is no reply box on that screen…

When you are in a conversation with a particular person the search is not that crucial IMO.

Also feedback link is broken on top of page, software version check is *#0000# not *#000# :-).

  79. While I understand Nokia needs to preserve similar style and feel to some extent, saying “UI and fonts: We tried to create similar user experience as with other messaging. So that’s why we do not have any smiles etc.” seems a bit sheepish. Go and challenge the System and the “Big Guys on 10th Floor”! Be brave! You are in the door already, innovate; no, INNOVATE! :)
To put it a bit more seriously: should not the application’s specific purpose and needs dictate some of these issues (e.g. font size and how much of the message details are shown), rather than the S60 convention?

In any case, thanks for the responses!

  80. Here are my suggestions -

    1. Delivery Reports - Currently the delivery reports are displayed as unread messages in the convesation window. You cannot open these messages nor can you mark them as read. There should either be an option to turn of the delivery report display in the conversation window or an option to erase all deliv reports.

    2. Mark as read - Currently, you have to open the message to mark it as read. But while in a conversation, many times you recieve 1 or 2 words messages which can be easily read in the message scroll. Here, a mark as read option would be useful.

    3. Deleting Messages - I tried to use the delete message option on a Deliv Report. It took ages for the deleting message to go away. There was no Cancel button either. Finally, when i could not wait any longer, i kept the phone away. And when i checked later, the Deliv Report was not even deleted.

    4. Too Large Icons - I felt the icons are a bit too big and clutter the screen. We could easily do with smaller icons.

    5. Font Size Customization - For my taste, the font size was bit too large, and distracted me from the messages. But it may be different for the others. So an option to the effect of choosing the font size would be welcome.

    6. Differentiate between Sent and Received messages - In the initial conversation screen where all the messages with a particular contact are listed, the only differing sign is the small arrow below the message icon. We all know that what we have messages over here, so we could do away with the huge message icon. Instead, what we need is the Arrow icons signifying whether it is a sent message or a received messages.

    7. IM like options - Currently, we are shown conversations with all the contacts. There some of the contacts i do not want to have conversations with. Please allow us to close the conversations with the selected contacts.

There are the suggestions i could think of as of now, as and when i think up of more, i shall keep posting them.

  82. Nice enhancement to the contacts app. Installed and work accordingly in my E90. The streaming of message on the outside screen is great. But when press to open the message, it just exit the contact app. This app definately improve productivity. Keep up the good work.

  84. Like i said in the feedback, great app. Missed this on nokia since 3310.

The only thing that is not working for me:

    - Everytime i exit the app I have to reload all messages by selecting a contact and seeing its propreties.

    - Because i have a lot of sms (in my country sms are free) the info of total messages from contacts is not accurate (for ex, to one of my friends it shows 407 or 499 or 470 or 520…)

    - I can’t have it running for long, since it gives memory error, wich takes me back to problem n. 1

    Keep up the good work

  85. As previously reported from other E61i users, attempting to open a message crashes the app. Also, attempting to delete a message or conversation does not appear to work.

On the plus side, it does appear to work as well with Good Contacts as the integrated text messaging does.

Overall a nice application and I hope to see improvements for the E61i folks. I just switched from a Treo 650 and love everything about the E61i much, much better than the Treo _except_ for the integrated text messaging, which is very poor in comparison. The Conversation app will go a long way toward closing that gap as soon as it’s working a bit better.

    Comment by Doug — September 26, 2007 @ 8:49 pm

  86. The idea of this app is very good. Good on Nokia for listening to the consumers about their needs. My hats off to you guys.

However, as many people are saying, the fonts are just WAY too big to be used as an efficient threaded messaging app. As Viipottaja said, break the S60 conventions, the app should dictate how the fonts etc. are utilised. In my N73 I can choose to have my inbox view as one line, which is nice and small and can fit in quite a bit more messages into one screen without having to scroll. Please give us that option in a future update to the app.

Also, please let there be an option for it to be used as the default sms app. And, again, break the S60 convention and use it under the messaging tab, for after all, it is a messaging app…

The large fonts is seriously a deal breaker for me at the moment. With the large fonts it is not achieving the purpose of a threaded messaging app.

  89. I love the app!

    Nice work guys!

    Couple of suggestions though:
    1) It would be very helpful if there would be a search facility in the conversation tab. Although it is sorted by user per recent message, it would also help if we can also for search contacts, just like in the contacts tab.

    2) It would also be cool if it is also integrated in the message app since it is where you ( at least me ) look at the text messages receeived. Or if a new text message is received when in standby mode, it iwould be great if we could directly look at the conversation tab from the sms application instead of going to the contacts app again.

    3) It would also be great if there is an option to view message from the inbox only not include the messages in the folders. Usually what I do is move the old messages ( archive them ) in folders in messaging. It is a bit annoying seeing them in the list of messages eventhough they are old and archived. I also wish that you could filter the messages by received and sent.

All in all, it’s a great application. Can’t wait for the next release. Thanks!

  90. The one really critical thing missing from every threaded sms program I’ve tried is this: Merge multiple contacts’ messages into a single view.

I routinely communicate with my wife via SMS, but here’s the difference: I send her an SMS to her phone, but she replies via the service provider’s website, so I receive the reply from a different number than I send to.

I would see this a valuable for business people, or tight groups of friends who want to see the conversation thread of more than just “me and one other person”.

The ability to select multiple contacts, and assign a group name, or simply use the existing contact groups to view grouped conversations would be invaluable to me.

Oh yeah, and add the conversation view to Messaging, not Contacts, duh!

Oh and is there some way to keep the threads cached? Having to wait while the app re-builds the lists of conversations every time I open the app is annoying. That delay means it’s often faster to find a message just by scrolling through the Inbox.

And let me hop on the bandwagon and reiterate the big problems with the app on my E61: Font is too big, wrap messages onto more than one line (scrolling text is silly and too slow), and stop crashing when trying to ‘open’ a message.

All in all, this seems to be a good first attempt. I’m very glad to see Nokia coming out with this app. It needs some work obviously, but if these points can be taken into account and fixed, you’ve got a winner here.

  92. Had it installed on my E61. It crashes when I attempt to open a message. It gave me an error - something to do with the phone memory was full. Then I realized that I had 1000+ text messages in memory. I suggest that the application cache the messages since generating the list over and over again would mean it would be a memory hogger if there is a large number of text messages already in memory.

  96. Since installing this app it has severly slowed down access to contact information: when drilling down throug a contact to get to their number, address details etc it takes approximately 30 seconds for the information to be displayed, during which time the phone is unresponsive.

apart from this it is a great idea and I would love it if it worked.

This one negative completely outways the benefits and I will be removing this a.s.a.p!

  99. When a contact has two or more numbers you don’t get messages from different numbers to same thread. You get two threads and they don’t actually even show the name, but only related to one number. The other thread(s) is/are only represented by a number, not by a name under which, the number actually is in your contact book.

This particular app, as such, probably won’t be developed for long. It was a research proto. Instead, other Nokia teams are working hard to improve the actual built-in S60 applications, and they are listening your feedback.

In the meanwhile (before the built-in apps get upgraded), we might release other protos for you to be evaluated through beta labs.

  108. I have an N95 with the latest firmware - and there is a bug in this app with Sent multimedia messages.
It misreads the name of the sendee, trunctaing it, and creates xtra converation entries for these truncated names.
I’ve reported it on the Beta Labs feedback, a few weeks ago, and receivced no reply.
This does not inspire confidence in Nokia’s interest in listening and responding re: its beta labs applications, and this is disappointing.

    Comment by geoffg_n95 — October 16, 2007 @ 1:47 pm

  109. geoffg_n95: sad to hear that you were disappointed. I guess we need to define some kind of clear policy and expectation level for Nokia to respond to your feedback. As we have cut out the middlemen (in setting up the direct feedback channel to Nokia R&D teams), the quality of responses goes inevitably down. The individual reading your comments is typically the product manager himself, and he just doesn’t have time to answer to most emails.

    This requires some thought.

  110. Good job on the Conversation application. Few items can be improved though to make it useful. I used threaded SMS on iPhone and Treo so actually used both versions. I like Treo SMS threaded chat better. It is neat and can fit more messages onto the screen. Is it possible to have the Conversation also as default SMS app? It is too many clicks to get to it at this point. If it can be something like Treo version or iPhone version it would be awesome.

    1) sorting: I think it shud be customizable. Like i cud move my wife’s messages to the top and then the next priority etc.
    2) placement: although it wud be nice if it were in the messaging (like an extra option of conversations, that wud simply group the inbox, outbox and sent items as it does here) but this option, where it appears in the contacts should not be removed. i think it makes more sense here. however, there should be some form of integration to the messaging app as well.

It works perfectly on my E50-2 and i am using it from today so ill post if something else comes up.

It also would work better if when entering a conversation we could be able to see the whole message instead of waiting for the motion sms to run a display the text. Also, it woldb be nice ti have other advanced options like, font type selection, or a special theme. Well, thanks anyway, this is why treos are still the best sms and e mail phones.

  132. Great app. Have been using it for some time now.
Fonts and everything else is fine, HOWEVER: need cyrilic support please! otherwise the quick reply is pretty useless.
Also it takes a rather long time to open, but thats ok i guess.
Overall great application. Would love to see it embedded into phone software in the next update or so. Its way more useful than mobile TV or nokia maps (on phones without GPS).
    Thank you.

  133. this is a great app!

the icons in the conversation view are hard to distinguish. the little arrow pointing up or down isn’t really clear - it should be bigger and bolder.

also, when i hilite one of my responses, i should probably see my photo/icon and not the remote’s.

    again, nicely done. :-)

  134. Nice app, makes reviewing SMS easier and aids quick spotting of messages requiring a reply.

  135. Hi Tommi,

Loving the app but as many have pointed out there’s quite a few little things that would be nice if you could change.

I’m a software developer myself, fancy releasing the source? I’ll have a play with it and see what I can come up with.

The main thing for me is the text size, and some clear way of showing sent/received.

    Regards

    Chris

  136. Yes, please release the source, so that we can take a look at why it does not work on so many devices.

  137. Is Conversation broken on N95 21.0.016? After i upgraded phone software 2 days ago I am no longer able start Conversation. The message “Unable to execute file due to security reason”
Guess the new software is more restrictive in some way, probably access to adress book.

Is there any way of getting pass this situation?

  140. Conversation worked fine for me (if a little slowly) on my N95 8GB before I upgraded it to the new 20 firmware level.

Now it installs ok but when I click on the icon, nothing happens.

That’s a real shame as it’s a great uncomplicated app - unlike 3rd party apps.

Can you let me know as soon as you have it working pls?
