Conversation for Nokia Eseries devices

Quick note: Conversation application just became compatible with Nokia Eseries devices. If you have Nokia E60, E61 or E70, you need to update your SW to the latest version (3.0633.09.04) to make it work.

Have fun and keep the feedback coming!!

  1. I installed the previous version a few days ago on my E65 and it works. So my question is what does this new update offer? And what do I need to uninstall the old version before I install this new one?

  2. just installed it on my e61. how come it does not scan my existing SMS log to create conversation entries. if that’s not part of the functionality, it really should be.

this release shows hope that nokia is listening to the users and will make the much needed improvements in the pim tools.

    cheers

  3. never mind, it just took a very long time to initialize.

  4. It looks like you have to update also E50 to make this application running.

    Comment by Jaro — October 22, 2007 @ 7:51 pm

  5. cool, here are the gripes:

-coversation index has got to be cached it takes a long time to generate when the application starts.
-there should be an option to sort convesations by name or by date; type name to jump to list item would be cool too.
-the incoming/outgoing message marker inside the coversation view should be more recognizable.
-in the running apps view the icon appears as contacts

  6. is there some kind of agreement in nokia never to mention the E65? this ALWAYS happens, not in the least with the firmware (although one is rumored to be in the works).

  7. Was this not previously compatible with e-series devices? I’ve been running it on my E61i since it was available…

  8. On my E61i if I moved to a message and selected it to open it would hard hang messaging. This seems to now not be a problem with this version. Thanks!

How about looking at the delivery report and merging that in each message (like put a small “d” next to the icon on the messages that get delivered) That is one of the coolest features in Blackberry phones…

Emoticons would be nice (even if the other users device may not decode them as emoticons)

Also since I installed this (first time around) or maybe it’s mobile web server, on occasion when I send a text even through conversation it gets sent, gets a delivery confirmation, all OK however their seems to be a blank message to the sender that is deferred stuck in the outbox… anyone else seeing this? (might just be time to reflash the phone and reinstall all apps!)

  9. NickP,

I also have this problem. Sometimes I also get messages saying ‘SMS already in use: Failed” (that’s just from memory, but it’s something like that).

Do you have this problem only when sending from the conversation app? I get it when sending from the normal method. I don’t remember if I had this problem before installing conversation, it’s quite possible it only started since…

    Comment by Joseph — October 23, 2007 @ 3:03 am

  10. Joseph: I had the exact same problem on my E90. I get the error message saying something like: “SMS already in use”. I get it when sending through the normal method. After I uninstalled Conversation the problem went away.

  11. Still no support for 3250?

    Comment by yuku — October 23, 2007 @ 11:27 am

  12. the other weird this is that logically this application should be together with messaging, not the address book…

    Comment by mike — October 23, 2007 @ 4:11 pm

  13. OK. tried installing the new version - it asks me if I want to replace old version with new one, I say yes, but old version cannot be removed. I go to the Application Manager and try to remove it manually, also cannot be deleted. What can I do?

  14. This app is a piece of crapware not worthy of the Nokia name on many fronts:

#1 - With this crapware installed I get the “SMS already in use” error message whenever I’m trying to send sms. Quite annoying !
#2 - When sending an sms from withing this crapware the name of the receipient doesn’t show in Sent items, only the person’s phone number. Even though this person is in my contacts. Hello ! What were the coders smoking ?
#3 - Who is the Einstein that decided that this crapware should be part of contacts? When a new sms comes in the messaging application opens up by default. This crapware should be integrated into messaging not contacts.

Who coded this crapware? Part-time grade school students in their parents’ basement?

  15. It was a short-lived application. Downloaded, installed, shook my head and de-installed. Some points:
    - who came up with the terrific idea to incorporate SMS chat into contacts? Must have been a real user experience expert. I could live with having it also in the contacts. But not connecting it at all to the messaging application is just bare incompetence. You receive a message, click the messaging dialog box away (since it is useless to go into the messaging application) and then open the contacts! Really amazing to contemplate the thought process of the application developer here.

    - Neat graphics isn’t all. Too little text is shown for no good reason. Really chat experience is not coming up there.

    - Why is it that the messages are scanned every time I open the tab? Is caching really that hard to implement? With hundreds of SMS, this program becomes virtually unusuable for actual ‘conversation’!

    - Adding actual features that are long missing from the message app would be good, such as emoticons (why again aren’t they in the built-in messaging in the first place???), better template support and short cuts for most used senders (again, why isn’t that part of the built-in one???).

So there is an opportunity lost again by Nokia. Must continue looking for others then to fill in.

  16. Jubei,

Turn the phone off then on again. Then upgrade/delete before doing anything else. (My hunch is that this works because you can’t remove the program properly while it’s loaded and running in memory).

  17. Wow! Why on earth were my comments deleted from this thread?

I reported a bug, complimented the product, and tried to help one of the users stuck trying to undelete.

Is any of that forbidden here?

  18. Whoops! Never mind. Two versions of the blog! (egg on my face)

  19. I have an E70 and would love to upgrade to the 3.0633.09.04 sw version, but when I plug in my product code (0538292) I am told that 2.0618.07.10 is the latest software for me. Will conversation run on this?

    Comment by Robert Collier — October 26, 2007 @ 7:26 pm

  20. Contacts doesn’t seem to work on my e60. I’ve tried it several times, but nohing happens. It just wont start.

And also for e60 software ver. is 2.0618.06.05 and the software updater says it’s the latest version. Is the problem in the .sis or my phone?

  21. A threaded SMS and messaging app is long overdue. This is an improvement and still needs some work. Thank you for creating it. Here are some suggestions:

    • Messages should be more chat style not the scrolling graphics
    • Ability to easily respond to email sent MMS messages to the phone account
    • Integrate with messaging application and plug-in so that it pops up automatically
    • Selectable fonts/colors

    Cheers

  23. Hello guys at Labs.

    Stop Xmas holiday now.

It cant be so hard to make conversation app for S60V3.

    And make it fast please.

  24. Hello All,

I would have to agree with the post by Simcard. I’ve reported this a number of times but haven’t had any contact or seen any updates.

    The download information says…”Conversation for Nokia E50, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E70″ but requires “firmware 3.0633.09.04, if available”

I’ve run Nokia SW updater numerous times and have found nothing that allows me to update my E62 Firmware let alone specific version like 3.0633.09.04.

    My device states:
    v2.0618.06.17
    10-08-06
    RM-88

Perhaps if you’re going to specify a mandatory requirement you should:

    A) make sure it is available for all the devices you include as “compatible”
    B) include a link to either the specific firmware or links to updates for each device.

  26. Does anyone have any idea how I can force my E60 to update to 3.x? It would be nice to be able to use this application, especially seeing as how its listed under “supported”.

  29. My E70 is unable to update to V3, would there be a chance that firmware 3.0 is made available to my phone in the future?

    Comment by Calvin — May 13, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  30. Nokia E70-2 devices (US/Canada version) will not work with this application because of their outdated SW. There is no SW update available for these, the 3.x update is for rest-of-the-world E70-1 device only. So don’t even try to download this on your E70-2 model.

  31. Just tested this with Nokia E65 with 3.0633.69.00 (06-02-08) firmware and after installation couldn’t get Contacts app to start. After unsintalling Conversation and Nokia Internet Services it started to work again.
