Nseries PC Suite 2.0 re-launch (significant improvements done, thanks for your feedback!!)
Nseries PC Suite 2.0 is back with a vengeance. During the last two months, the team has worked extra-hard, achieving significant improvements:
* Improved and more user-friendly installation: web installer - no need to download every time the whole package, only selected applications
* Nokia Photos integrated
* Single-click sync for more user-friendly synchronization
* Significantly improved stability
Download here. And please tell us what you think!!
Good application. I like it much more than the classic PC Suite. And good job with the “install what componets you want” Web downloader.
Comment by Bogdan Galiceanu — November 20, 2007 @ 4:04 pm
After accepting the lisence the install freezes for a minute, then continues just fine. Windows Vista Ultimate x86 on a fully speced out thinkpad T61.
Comment by Stefan Constantinescu — November 20, 2007 @ 4:29 pm
I canceled the install already. Was taking way too long to download and install things. I’m on a 24 megabit per second connection. You should really offer two options for people. One being a huge file for offline installation and another this web downloader.
Comment by Stefan Constantinescu — November 20, 2007 @ 4:32 pm
I agree with Stefan. It’s better to have those 2 options as this would make it possible to install without -needing- and Internet connection.
Also, forgot to point out in my previous comment: those who wish to try this app should make sure they uninstall all instances of the old PC Suite and reboot their PC first. I had some trouble because I forgot to do this.
Comment by Bogdan Galiceanu — November 20, 2007 @ 4:57 pm
I’d also like to mention that I’m not a fan of having 5-6 entries in my Windows Programs list to remove. Personally, I prefer one-click install/uninstall.
On another note, I can’t get it to authenticate my N82 via bluetooth.
Comment by Ricky Cadden — November 20, 2007 @ 6:07 pm
I was really looking forward to playing with this, but alas, I can’t. The loading splash screen comes up and flickers like crazy, then I get this: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/3052/capturese0.png
It’s a clean install, on a clean install of Vista. I’ve re-installed twice with no luck. I’ll try it on my laptop later, hopefully that will work.

Err, what happened to Messaging and Contacts Editor that are part of the regular PC Suite?

One thing I can’t figure out… Why the hell wouldn’t you include the ability to send/read txt messages (same way as regular pc suite)??
I have no idea why NSeries PC Suite wouldn’t have this…
Comment by Angus — November 21, 2007 @ 3:45 pm
One question: why?
Why Nseries and regular, “vanilla” PCS? Wouldn’t it be more logical to have S60 (what about E series) PCS and regular PCS, if we really have to have two versions?
Comment by Hole — November 21, 2007 @ 8:56 pm
Thank you so much for Nokia Photos! I have to agree with Angus though… bring back the Messages function.
Comment by Darla — November 21, 2007 @ 9:13 pm
Tommi, when you will introduce this 6.85 version of the regular PC Suite which can be found on your site?http://nds1.nokia.com/NOKIA_COM_1/Microsites/BetaLabs/applications/apps/Nokia_PC_Suite_rel_6_85_11_1_eng.exe
Comment by Leonard — November 21, 2007 @ 10:59 pm
The Messages function is important. Where did it go?
Comment by Kazutoyo — November 22, 2007 @ 1:12 am
I have a big dislike for apps that need .Net to run because .Net is slowing the PC. So making apps that run without .Net are very much appreciated.
Since I am very curious by nature and for now there is no alternative: Is the PC Suite compatible with the this weeks released MS .Net 3.5?

Hi Leonard, PC Suite 6.85 is in closed beta now, meaning that it’s distributed only for a selected beta tester group, and the feedback and bug reporting system is open only for them.
I can’t comment about the target launch date, sorry.
Comment by Tommi Vilkamo — November 22, 2007 @ 11:37 am
Any word on the messaging feature Tommi?? It’s extremely an extremely handy feature to have..
Comment by Angus — November 22, 2007 @ 11:43 am
I’ve left feedback via the app, but felt I have to comment here too. Having installed this, I have two suites as the old PC Suite wasn’t replaced. I’ve now removed this, but Lifeblog no longer functions! Is Nokia Photo a replacement for Lifeblog (it seems to b=do the same thing)? If so, is there a migration path from Lifeblog, and what software will be required on the phone? I don’t want to lose my previous timeline stuff in Lifeblog on the PC…
Nokia is sending out very mixed messages with this suite, and I’m easily confused!
Comment by Alan S> — November 22, 2007 @ 1:49 pm
Well, I’ve had the installer running for almost 4 hours now (with all options ticked for download), and it’s not done yet. It’s at Nokia Music Manager now, going really slow downloading the different packages. I know my connection surely isn’t the problem, already tested it, it’s only the NSeries PCS installer which is downloading this slow. I’m running Vista Ultimate (32bit), although I doubt that’s why I’m experiencing this problem.
Anyone else having the same problem?
Comment by Daniel — November 23, 2007 @ 9:43 pm
Yes, we have heard about some people having problems with download speeds in web installer. We’ll investigate this first thing Monday morning… (I’m purely guessing here, but might be that we have used some download infrastructure that was not scalable enough to meet the demand.)
Comment by Tommi Vilkamo — November 24, 2007 @ 11:39 am
Hellloooo Tommi…..
any word on the messaging feature?? or if there’s the option to install that component??
Comment by Angus — November 24, 2007 @ 12:25 pm
Anyone has a problem displaying devices list on Windows Explorer? I have Windows Vista and my device is not in listed in Windows Explorer at all. Try to re-install it; but still the same problem.
For now… I have to roll back to the standard PC Suite (6.84), which is much better (in my opinion) in term of usability and performance.
Comment by Antony Pranata — November 24, 2007 @ 10:28 pm
Tommi
Please please please….
We’re open beta testing this for you guys, so do something really simple for us. Tell us what it is we’re supposed to be doing with it!!
It’s missing apps like there’s no tomorrow (SMS, contacts, calendar) and Photo Manager looks like another take on the Lifeblog concept. But WHY? What is different? What are we looking for here?
Ok so it kinda works as is but what’s the point? I’m not gonna use it ‘cuz it has no perceived benefits to me (unless I’m blind and can’t see the obvious, like many others here).
Love to help, but N-Series PC suite 2 beta is right royal screw-up. Sorry.
oh BTW - Why does the download manager attempt to download & install a client for my N73, when the phone subsequently refuses to install the client as ‘not compatible with this phone’. Doh!
Comment by Sboy2010 — November 25, 2007 @ 6:16 am
Nokia Photos is great, but isn’t it just Lifeblog rebadged?
It seems to add no other significant functionality other than completely breaking my Lifeblog database.
Now I can only sync with Nokia Photos and NOT Lifeblog!
Installing this suite has messed up 3 years of Lifeblog entries and I can no longer import into Lifeblog!
Comment by Marc — November 26, 2007 @ 3:18 am
I had the same problem with this beta: importing with Lifeblog stopped working. However, I found that uninstalling Lifeblog and reinstalling it from nokia.com/lifeblog fixed the problem. And all my old pics and SMS are still there. I hope this helps.

Well I’ve got to say it… I think the lack of reply with regards to the messaging function is nothing short rude…
I hate to say it, but it will make me think twice about buying another Nokia product again (The fact that they’ve superseded a perfectly functional piece of software with a newer, less functional version is dissapointing…)

Sorry, I’ve had a busy day. But I just forwarded this question to the Nseries PC Suite team, let’s see what they say.
> “I hate to say it, but it will make me think twice about

That’s fine for me - we’re living in a free world. But I don’t fully understand your logic, as nobody is forcing you to use this. If you find the availability of Nseries PC Suite 2.0 beta offputting, I wonder whether Beta Labs is the right place for you…
Comment by Tommi Vilkamo — November 26, 2007 @ 4:03 pm
Fair call Tommi…
Don’t think I was using logic when I made that initial post (it’s 12:15am here and I’ve had a bit to drink.)… And in all fairness (to Nokia and yourself) it is something that is missing in the current Nseries PC Suite release (still something I was hoping would’ve been included in version 2 though).
I do still find the initial lack of reply to the messaging feature a tad disappointing, it’s been the fourth (and my third) mention of it over the past week or so, and you’ve responded to other comments in the meantime.
Comment by Angus — November 26, 2007 @ 4:20 pm
Most of the apps refuse to install (they only report “Failed”, that’s all the app tells me).
The parts that did install: One Touch Access, Music Manager, Application Installer, Content Copier, PC Sync, Get Connected Wizard, Connection Manager
The parts that do not: Microsoft Windows Media Component, Nokia Nseries PC Suite, Nokia Photos, Nokia Nseries Video Manager, Nokia Download!, Nokia Software Updater
Where are the error messages? Where is the log file for the installer? How am I supposed to know what went wrong here?
Comment by Noah Mittman — November 26, 2007 @ 9:43 pm
How about a Linux version?
Comment by Terence Eden — November 27, 2007 @ 12:40 pm
OK, I was able to get the applications to install (had to run the individual installers separately, however the Web Installer ran it was not able to launch the installers, this was NOT a problem with Standard PC Suite 6.8x), and now Nseries PC Suite is running. “Explore your Nokia device” does not work — it just opens up the My Computer window with no phone connectivity — and the Update Manager says it cannot connect to the Nokia Update Server and then tells me to check my settings. However, the settings for the PC Suite have NO internet settings at all, so I have nothing to check.
Comment by Noah Mittman — November 28, 2007 @ 2:31 am
I dearly miss the ability to type text messages on my pc using the new PC Suite application. With the older versions I could still do that. Am I missing something or is it not possible? Also I’d like to have the Contacts functionality back.
Comment by Dennis de Lange — December 1, 2007 @ 9:24 pm
I’d really like to see the ability to text (SMS) from the PC Suite application return too.
Comment by Andrew Jensen — January 2, 2008 @ 11:44 pm
I guess I’m a bit puzzled here, why did you create an entirely new application instead of taking the approach of enhancing the existing PC Suite? I just installed PC Suite “classic” 6.85.14.1 this evening, and after starting it up for the first time it immediately informed me that there was a new Video Transfer applet available. I told it to go ahead and the installation went painlessly. So it looks like the “plain” PC Suite has a good plug-in architecture with support for on-the-fly updating/install of components - why not leverage this and make the N-series specific goodies part of an “N-series” applet (or several applets)? That way users can continue to use the well-tested features of PC Suite classic (such as Messages, as already has been mentioned), while also being able to enjoy these new N-series features. I’ll admit that this approach may not look as pretty as what you’ve got here, but a 300MB download? Come on, you’ve gotta be kidding me!
I suppose it would make it a bit tricky to do the beta, as you (or rather, the PC Suite team) would probably need to make a special build of PC Suite with changes to limit the N-series applets to this build of PC Suite while they’re still in beta…

Hi everyone, i tried with N82 and it is not working with download and some problem with other app like NSU it says phone not supported can somebody give some feedback
Comment by Rajesh — January 7, 2008 @ 4:22 pm
Will the option to synchronize Windows Vista calendar be added to the application as it now possible to do this with Nokia PC Suite version 6.85??
Comment by Martin — January 8, 2008 @ 11:47 am
I also wonder why to invest on multiple parallel pc suite sw thingies when the existing ones are far from perfect. (if we would be beta testing a next generation pc suite sw then I would understand but this seems to be a thing separately for N-Series devices.) I actually wonder why the PC Phone exists too… I would rather see one slick “computer companion” sw for my family nokia phone(s) that handles the content syncing between computer and phone in proper manner, phone feature access from desktop computer, device firmware updates and app installations. This thing shouldn’t be bloatware like all current pc suites seems to be. One sw should work with multiple users too with different phones. And of course the same sw should be availble on all major operating systems: win, mac and linux syncing natively to commonly used SWs.
Comment by Fooba — February 20, 2008 @ 7:51 pm
Dove into the new relaunch of this after the bad start to it last year. Its slick looking and easy to use but I am finding the photo app (which is awesome to use) a real memory hog. Also agree with comments on the message application it is a real bonus on the regular suite but not being part of this app is odd. I now have to use the web browser format one now. This is odd as the photo app turns this into a one app suite but taking out the message function and we are now back to needing to run 2 separate apps to use the function of the phone, odd really, when nokia seem to be building the monster one function super suite. Smash Nokia PC phone and this together and then you might be getting closer Nokia. Oh in the future add ngage options to it as well
Comment by speleokip — February 20, 2008 @ 10:09 pm
Why in “Explore your nokia device” there is no my nokia device? And I had some problems with it
Actually I like its interface more then Other PC suite but I will use it then you fix the NSeries PC Suite.
Comment by ram — February 23, 2008 @ 10:38 am
Where is the Nokia Phone Browser? How can I access my Phone memory now? Ando for what is the “Explore your nokia device”? Just opens the Explorer with no nokia device.
Comment by TigertheGambler — February 26, 2008 @ 8:05 pm
The new Nokia Photo application has one big disadvantage compared to the old Image transfer application: Nokia Photo stores images always to the “My Photos” folder which is annoying. It would be good to have an option where to transfer the pictures to as I do not use the “My Photos” folder on my computer. The old Image transfer application from PC Suite 6.85 had this option.
Moreover I miss the Phone Browser from the previous version (same problem that ram had).
That’s why I uninstalled PC Suite as I would not consider it “graduated” if this simple feature is missing. I hope PC Suite 2 will be improved soon.
Comment by Joe — March 12, 2008 @ 4:13 pm
Graduated?!
Did you fix “video freezes after ~35 min of playing” movies, converted by Nokia NSeries Video Manager? (1.1.10)
Comment by olza — March 12, 2008 @ 7:46 pm
Like some others, for me “Explore your Nokia device” does nothing except open an explorer window. Where’s my phone memory? I’d really like this fixed

Where can I find an offline installer? I wish to install this on my work PC which DOES NOT have an Internet connection!
As nice as web installer is for some situations (ensuring the lastest version), it is extremely limiting in A LOT of other situations… which is why most software typically offers the alternative offline installer download..

Hi there…does anyone seems o take a long time downloading the pc suite? i’ve left mine overnight and it was still downloading the first application…do i have to do anything beforehand to make the downloading work???? or my laptop is too slow not enough ram??? i’m using window vista but shouldnt think thats a problem. Please help as I have aborted the download four times after leaving it for a night to download

Another one here for the ‘where’s my nokia device’ crowd
Nothing shows up in Windows Explorer, regardless of what usb mode I select…
Not good, nokia, not good.

I’m also having trouble finding my nokia device in phone browser. (Explore your nokia device).
It only opens ‘my computer’. I’m using N82.
However, it does open contents of my old 6230i.
Great job guys, finally we have one app that communicates with both S40 and S60 devices.
Only the ‘explore your device’ feature seems not to work
When can we expect a fix ?
Comment by Nikola — July 15, 2008 @ 12:11 am
July 2008 - “Explore Your Nokia Device” still just opens an empty Explorer, no Nokia device there.
