Major update for Nokia Sports Tracker beta: web service added

Darn, I missed the scoop, as Eseries.org and All About Symbian broke the news already. Yeah, it’s true: significantly improved Nokia Sports Tracker beta is out. And it’s good.

You can try it at http://sportstracker.nokia.com/.

We haven’t updated the Beta Labs page for Sports Tracker yet, I’ll try to get it done tomorrow. However, feel free to start sending us feedback already now!! It’s still in beta, and the team is actively improving everything based on your feedback.

In the meanwhile, check out the presentation by Jussi Kaasinen, one of the main guys from the Sports Tracker team: (starts from 5:42)

  1. This service is really, really impressive. I can’t believe it is free. Garmin offers a similar service but it is subscription based service and not half as good as this one. I know because I paid $95 for their service :-( Well, never again - I am sticking with Nokia Sports Tracker~!

  2. are they using the bulit-in GPS Modul???
If yes it is batter tehnthe GPS Modul from the N95.
Why you ask?? He use the GPS in the House and the N82 find the satellite.

Ah the N82 turn theNokia Sports Tracker display ;-)
I like the Nokia Sports Tracker because it track the speed on “Autobahn”[like hayway in US but you can so fast you wont] so i can show my family haw fast they drive.

Funny the Staps recoder in the new beta version

I can not wait to make a hands on ;-)

  3. Nokius, The N95 gets a signal inside buildings forme fine. As long as your on the top floor and theres not a metal roof!

infact now with a-gps, its much faster. normally around 15-30 seconds, but it a couple of times its got full lock in 10 seconds even in a building.

I just went to download! to get this new version, but its still the old one? Tried the sportstracker link posted above, and the download links dont work yet.

Anyone got this new version yet?

  4. Fantastic addition to an already great app.

One suggestion for the download page: The way you have categorised the client versions doesn’t look right… There are 4 S60v3.1 categories and you have to look at the supported devices in each to find the correct one for your phone. It would be better if there was the normal ‘pick your phone model’ selection rather than going by the S60 version and firmware.

  5. v1.63 now installs fine on e61, but when i try to launch it gives error

can someone at nokia beta labs investigate this?

  6. I agree, this is really a great app and the step-meter is a cool new functionality. Maybe you will get the “bone exercise” meter also built in. It’s basically calculated based on step.

The world is waiting for a ling to Bluetooth pulse meters and recording those. After that SportsTracker will be perfect!

No, you can’t. Currently, it would cause too much maintenance work for me. I do want to add such, however, as soon as we can figure out a low-maintenance way to have such links (so that the barcodes would always point to latest version).

Do you have any plans to update the software so that it actually works on an e61? My e61 software is 3.0633.09.04, which I believe is the latest version available.

I really want to use NST.

  21. Nokia Sports Tracker has some really greate features. Although I personally think it might be better suited for hikers, bikers, cyclists, or drivers than for runners I’d like to see how this can be evolved - especially around community features like challenges, e.g. doing the same route as another user, only faster. Nike+ comes to find who do this really nicely.

  24. Hi,

I use the Sportstracker on my N95 when I’m running and when I’m racing, its excellent.

I use an external bluetooth GPS as having the keypad open on the handset is not a good idea.

I’ve found that the Belkin I-Pod Touch / I-Phone Sport Armband holds the N95 perfectly and even has space for a key.

Used it for the first time on a cross country race on the north kent coast on 13/01/2008 and drowned the phone in a water filled ditch, I now place it inside a double sealed freezer bag.

Excellent product, what’s in the pipeline for the future?

Ive installed sports tracker to my N82. But I have a problem registering for web services through pc. It says “application error” when submiting the web form. Any one have any idea.

  28. Hi,

I have also been having problems accesing the web service for nokia sports tracker.

I have registerd for the service with my phone and when I try to log in to the webservice I get an error saying I need an activation key. I have never been sent an email to activate my account, so I next click on the Lost Password link and enter in my email address and it is not recognised. So I enter in my username (itsmoirob) and it gives an Application Error and to email helpdesk@sportstracker.nokia.com
I have tried the email address but it is not recognised.

I have also left some feedback regarding this, but wanted to see if anyone knew any other way to resolve this situation?

    Thanks

  29. I haven’t used Sports Tracker yet, as I’m eagerly awiting the delivery of my shiny new E90 at the end of this week. However, I’ve spotted it may have a use for helping populate OpenStreetMap, the open source map project, as I see from the manual at sportstracker.nokia.com you can export tracks as GPX files. I intend to save data about the local cycleways as well as my rugby club and upload them, thus keeping in the spirit of the “Sports” part of the sport tracker. 8-)

  31. It would be good if the skiing activity autopaused when you gain altitude for more than a few second. At that stage you are on a lift.

    Comment by Colin Ferris — February 19, 2008 @ 3:11 pm

  32. Neil, you can change GPS positioning methods from phone’s settings. Press application key and choose ‘Tools->Settings->General’ and then ‘Positioning’ item (last in the list). At ‘Positioning methods’ enable Bluetooth GPS and disable Integrated GPS. Start Sports Tracker and choose ‘New Workout’. Bluetooth GPS device scanning and pairing should start automatically. Choose your GPS device; that should do the job.

“Photo could not be positioned automatically on the map.
You can always select Set location, and click the correct location on the map.”

I checked the time stamps from GPX file and EXIF data in pictures and they match. So those photos should be possible to position automatically. Has anyone with PC-to-web upload had similar problem?

Also, for some reason the “Start time” in “Workout summary” was changed from the original 19:28 to 20:28. In “Edit this workout” it was still 19:28.

  44. Yes, great app, but it doesn’t work on my mobile.
I have N73 ME, SW version: 4.0727.2.2.1 (04.07.2007) RM-133; GPS LD-4W. For now I don’t updated SW version to 4.0736 because I wait for next one, 4.0750 (for now it’s not available for Eastern Europe).

The problem is SportsTracker it not record any movement, its display speed (?!), but the GPS data, longitude and latitude
it is blocked. I have tried different methods to solve this problem, reinstalling application and remove all configs (I hope!), delete GPS settings; none of the above seems to work. If you want to see my “workouts” (0km! in 1h 3min 31s and 51min) >> http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=116382 & http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=116381

On the other hand I have other applications, Nokia Maps, Location Tagger, Google Maps, ViewRanger Demo and bliinGPSXS that work very well.

The question is: I’m doing something wrong (what can I do wrong?!)or it doesn’t work on my SW version?!

    Thank you for your help.

  46. Hi there - love using sports tracker and have used in on many occassions. I am currently getting a General Error when I start Sports Tracker and I am not able to upload any work outs to the WWW site. This is happening on both an E90 and an N95 8GB (both using the latest firmware). Any suggestions? And love the application! Great work!!

    Comment by Matt — April 15, 2008 @ 7:06 pm

  47. Regarding #46 have since done some more testing and seems to be only causing a General Error when I use an E90 / N95 8GB with data files that have been transferred via the Nokia PC Suite Backup/Restore feature. If I start fresh with a new memory card then I do not have the General Error (and of course no older, previous workouts are listed either). Therefore problem is partly fixed but I would like to know how to move my old workouts to this new memory card so they are available for review? Any suggestions?

    Comment by Oddvar Mikalsen — May 4, 2008 @ 7:53 pm

  52. After a week of experimenting with my new N82 and Sports Tracker I’ve made a few discoveries! Firstly, even without assisted GPS the N82 is just as good for outdoor use (in my case cycling) as my Garmin Edge - in fact, the GPS receiver is less likely to loose the satellite signals in overcast or tree-sheltered conditions. Also, I have had no trouble with vibration even on fast descents on roughish mountain roads, and the modified Brodit mount held the N82 in place just fine.

As I don’t need A-GPS, I tried using the N82 as a GPS alone, ie with the profile set to Offline. After a ride of over 4 hours I still had 5 battery bars left, so used this way my problem with short battery life is solved. Anyway, I don’t want or need any phone calls whilst training or in a group ride, so running offline suits me fine. And, there is plenty of battery power for a return to the general profile for any emergency calls for support vehicles if needed.

I have the very excellent Digital Clock power saver, so while riding I had the time of day visible. However, it struck me that it would be easy to have a Sports Tracker screen saver displaying one or two Sports Tracker fields instead - perhaps current speed, average speed, distance, time, time of day, etc. Even better, perhaps the power saver could let the user configure what fields to display on the power saver. This power saver would save me even more battery time, as I wouldn’t need to activate the screen to see my current speed, average, etc.

So, a Sports Tracker power saver which automatically replaces the Digital Clock (or whatever else is running) when tracking is what I need (with return to the default power saver on stop tracking), and ideally Sports Tracker settings to allow me to autoselect the Offline Profile when tracking (also returning to General on stop tracking). I reckon that I will get around 5-6 hours tracking, maybe more, from a full battery when used in this way.

    Is this sensible/feasible?

Had no problems uploading my files to the Nokia Sports Tracker site, which is similar to MotionBased and Garmin Connect. I find the SportTracks software (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/) much better than any of these, though, and it has the advantage that I can access and analyse my training log offline. At present I have to export my Nokia files as gpx for import to SportTracks, and this works fine until a direct load becomes possible.

    Comment by Alan Westwood — June 1, 2008 @ 3:57 pm

  53. It is an interesting program but I have two comments.
The first one is that as soon as I open the program it automatically starts a GPRS (or 3G) data connection.
I’ve checked that only few Kb are exchanged, but I can’t understand the reason why during all the tracking time the phone needs to be connected. In my opinion the connection is only necessary at the end if I decide to upload the file to your web service. In my opinion the above mentioned connection, plus the use of BlueTooth, reduces a lot the charge of the battery.
The second comment is concerning the tracking of the route. When I’m using the bike in the streets of the town and I turn left or right, the track on the map cuts the corner of the cross. This fact is probably due to the logging frequency of the GPS points (I suppose that the frequency is about 8 – 10 seconds). I would like to suggest Nokia to give the possibility to set, through the menu, different frequencies for the logging of the GPS points.

On returning home I discovered that I had left the General Settings / Access Point in Sports Tracker as my home wireless router (normally for tracking I set this to none, as I run the phone offline). After correcting this, ST returned to normal functions. Hope this helps. Regards, Alan.

    Comment by Md. Abdur Rahman — June 13, 2008 @ 10:53 pm

  57. To see your current latitude and longitude, just start a workout then go down two pages on the display screen. You should see a page with course, speed, latitude, and longitude. Alternatively, go up one page to see both current latitude and longitude on the satellite available screen.

    Comment by Alan Westwood — June 14, 2008 @ 10:53 pm

  60. Still finding Sports Tracker great on my N82. Have discovered that I can get battery power for at least 4 hours from full, even with the backlight permanently on so I can see the screen at any time, as long as the Offline protocol is selected with integral-gps only. Main battery drain seems to be the phone function, so just suspend it to get a great gps.

However, have found a fault with the manual pause when cycling. If during a ride I select Options and Pause, there is no Resume button afterwards. The top of the menu is Stop, so I have to start a new track then combine them later.

Easily resolved - just use the autopause and don’t touch the Options, and everything is fine. Needs to be fixed though!

    Regards, Alan.
