Nokia Internet Radio (beta)
Tue, 2007-12-04 07:48
Yesterday, Nokia officially announced:
Discover and listen to radio shows broadcasted over the internet with the Nokia Internet Radio service now available. The application can be downloaded for free from http://www.nokia.com/internetradio and will also be embedded in upcoming Nokia S60 3rd edition devices.
It's really good, go try it!! (warning: be
very careful with data transfer charges)
As the app is still in beta, you might wonder: why isn't it included under Beta Labs?
Well, it was a conscious decision. Nokia Internet Radio is very mature as a “beta” already, and therefore your feedback wouldn't have had as big of an impact as with other Beta Labs applications. In essence, the case is similar to
Nokia Multimedia Transfer 1.2 Beta for Mac, which we didn't include to Beta Labs website either.
At Beta Labs, we promise you a chance for
seeing your suggestions come to life. And I believe we shouldn't dilute this promise by including too mature items. Of course, I'm happy to post a quick link to such items, with some juicy insider info, through this blog.
What do you think, does this approach sound fair?
Ps. regarding Nokia Internet Radio compatibility, see the
heated debate in All About Symbian, tamed by Mr.Litchfield's enlightened guess:
On the compatibility issue, I think it's a case of "we've tested it on these devices, others may not work (yet)"
Comments:
Nokia Internet Radio supports Shoutcast Playlists, for example to get Virgin Radio
Go to http://shoutcast.com/directory /index.phtml
Search for virgin radio, right click on the ‘Tune in’ button and select ’save target as’ (or ‘download linked file’ if using a mac)
Now transfer the download .pls file to your phone via bluetooth and open it from your inbox, you can then save the stations to your favourites.
Ratkat,
Shoutcast Playlists only works with http:// protocol. Do you (or does anybody...) know if there is a program for symbian that play a radio with mms:// protocol (like mms://stream-parc01.terra.com. br/mib98fm )?
It's available only for N82, N91 and N95 :(
huh , it works ok on my 5700 :D
does not work on E65 (as listed ...) :-(
Works well on my N95. Tried it with WLAN and WAP, and only the former worked.
Ha - my fault! It works very well on my E65! Great!
Just take the binary for N91 and listen to the internet radio station. Thank you very much!
:-D :-D :-D
haven't tested yet.. but absolutly cool that nokia releases a non-third party wifi radio :D I'll be checking it out sound. thanks!!
edit: ehhh.. I only have the podcasting feature :(? 2bad.. As a e-serie owner I realy notice that it all gets published on the N-serie first :$
I tried it on my N95 with WLAN and work very well. But 1.FM baroque is wrong :-)
Is this based on the S60 Internet Radio app? http://opensource.nokia.com/pr ojects/s60internetradio/index. html
This is working great on my N73, think LCG Jukebox might be getting uninstalled from my phone.
Thanks Nokia, just another great FREE application from the team.
Why would you ever want to replace your phone with another make, when Nokia are bring out top quality application like this. Keep the good work up guys.
Suggestions for the next app could be a great OTA sync tool which syncs, contacts, calendar, photos, etc..
Nokia apps installed on my N73:
Nokia Conversations
Nokia Audiobooks
Nokia Internet Radio beta
Nokia Team Suite
Nokia Web Server
Nokia Maps
Nokia Barcode Reader
Nokia Wireless Presenter
Nokia Share online
Oh forgot, suggestion for improvement in the Internet Radio app would be that any additional stations added could be place in a folder rather than the favourites and the ability to edit the added station, as I made an error entering one and couldn't change it.
Great, so it works on my E61 if I download the N91 version, probably N82 that I've tried has a different symbian.
It seems odd to me that the left and right buttons are displayed top left and bottom left instead of usual bottom left and bottom right.
Other than that it's the best radio app I've tried so far.
Maybe adding officially E61 to the list wouldn't hurt.
I agree with gerrymoth; the only but very major problem is the fact that you cannot edit manually added stations. It is frustrating to write everything again if you make a mistake or the url for station changes.
only swiss station are working on N95, tried about 80% of the rest and no other is working
Wishlist: support for premium (paid/login) content at di.fm (e.g.) and support for WinAmp Remote (Orb).
Would it be possible to adjust the buffering (optionally, for long network delays)?
I emailed PlayRadioUK when I noticed they never had their Play Xmas station in the "Station directory" and they replied saying they have now requested Nokia to add it.
Ho, Ho, Ho!
Emailing Virgin Radio and few others to see what reply I get?
Great app! Works very well with HSDPA on the N95.
However, it does get some hickups when I run the Sportstracker in the foreground at the same time.
Also, it has some problems with reconnecting after it has lost the connection (comes up with a Connection timeout error)
It works on my E90. I use WLAN. The only thing is that I have not found volume setting anywhere? Volume is too loud, but how to adjust it??
The application apparently can't handel URLs which include passwords in the format: http://username:password@local host/stream.mp3
The same URL works perfectly in Winamp and without the password it works with Nokia Internet Radio
Tommi: This works good from a technical point of view on the E61 (thanks!)
However the soft keys are hosed. It thinks when using the N91 version that the screen is rotated 90 degrees. So the left softkey text shows up in the lower right of the screen and the right softkey text shows up in the upper right!
(HINT: the lower right softkey text is STILL the left button, the upper right softkey text is the RIGHT button).
Hi all,
Don't know if the developers of this app ever reads these posts and I don't know what it would take to get it working, but...
Could you please please please make it compatible with Orb!
As it is now, the app opens the playlist but it can't seem to connect to it.
The Real Player can't handle playlists at all and is basicly a pretty darn bad player when streaming.
Whish there would be support to stream the radio over uPnP to my stereo. A2DP would work of course. But alas I don't have that...
Works ok on my E61i except that the softkeys are reversed. Just wish this would have support for http authentication so that it would be possible to listen to subscription based radios. An auto-retry in case of failed connections (timeouts etc.) would also be nice, now the application just gives up on such.
It's great !!!!!!!!!!!
please provide more polish stations
I can finally listen to di.fm on the go. I love you guys.
@eickmeyer: that sucks, i want to use my premium di.fm account!
Been testin it for a while, works great, exept one thing .... it interrups the music for an incomming call, but doesnt start afterwards ... pretty annoying when listening to music while riding a bike, I always have to stop, unlock, press the "joystick", lock, and start driving again ... everytime someone trys to contact me ...... even if i dont answer.
execpt this litte thing it is very very FINE :D
tested on N95-8GB (V11.0.026)
It works on my N73 using gprs/edge (I used the N91 file option). However, I can only listen to http:// streaming radios. If I try to add a mms:// internet radio, the program doesn´t let me save the address.
Will there be support to mms:// internet radios in the final version?
Does someone here know if there is a program for series 60 9.1 3rd edition that allow to listen mms:// streaming radios?
I love it!!
Now i just wish my oper. would sell me flat rate!
I love it!!
Now i just wish my oper. would sell me flat rate!
thanks!!
PS: maybe some small app for PC to add / edit radio stations and upload to the phone? even xml based list ?
I'm waiting for internet radio application that support Basic access authentication like http//username:password@stream inghost.com/stream.mp3
I have used to listed premium internet radios and there would be really high quality stations only if I can use my premium account. Without this feature, the whole application is almost useless for me ;(
( DI.fm premium 64k ACC+ or 192k mp3 )
If you could add an "alarm clock" function to it so it could wake us up in the morning to the tunes of our favourite radio station, that would be AWESOME !
Works great on the outer display of the e90 - volume can be adjusted by pressing the alt-v (-) or alt-b (+) on the inner keyboard.
Thanks! I've been waiting for this for *along* time. One note: I can't receive calls while this application is running. This might be because I'm using the unsupported e61i. Either way, I'll take it!
good program, gui is fancy but clean, sound quality is excellent. if i had one criticism it would be that it doesnt play real streams which i think is a shame as it would be a nice integration with the inbuilt real player. just a thought....
N93i with wired headset, sound quality great. N93i with nokia BH-503 bluetooth headset, sound quality awful!!!
I have successfully downloaded the Internet Radio on my N95, but when I open it from applications I get the options to browse for stations but when I select it, I get thrown back into applications. Any idea on why this is? Any option I choose when in the Radio function ends up with me being chucked out into applications folder.
I use WLAN connection, which has no problem when using internet.
I'm kind of late, but i wanted to let you guys know that this application isn't accessible to blind people using a Cell Phone Screen Reader like Talks by Nuance. I made a similar comment yesterday on one of the Audiobooks Applications Posts. But if you could let your programmers know that it would be awesome to have an internet radio player even if you can't see, it would be exciting!
I'm writing now only to say that Core Codec Player - version 1.1.2 - played a mms:// internet radio. I went do Menu > Open URL... and write mms://media.itatiaia.com.br/It atiaia and it worked! Probably other links will work too, but I didn't test yet.
I hope it helps who have same problem, and I hope Nokia add mms:// support in the final version of this good application.
This is working great on my n95 8gb! However, if i wanted to add a station not found in the directory (like Ministry of Sound Radio) - how do i do it? Bec if i just add station manually by doing http://www.ministryofsound.com /radio/radioplayer/
it doesnt work.
How do i add manually a station?
Hmm - the N76 version doesn't work on my (AT&T/Cingular USA) N75
Should I try some other versions, or is the N75 not supported? I'd be surprised!
For Flickr, I was able to use the N76 and the N95 versions of the app.
I turned to her and began to lighting her. She hissed, her expertly lindsay lohan nude pic gallery exclaiming from maim to side.
love it. But missing a feature that would really make it useful for me. I like to listen to the radio in bed over wlan and it would be really useful if you could add a sleep timer, say 5 to 60 mins, then we could fall asleep listening to the radio and not wake up to a dead phone, battery :-)
I know you can plug it in but to be honest my N95 gets quite hot after a few hours with wifi on permantly and, as is, I don't want to fall asleep and have the internet radio going for 7 hours +!
It would really make this app a great all rounder!
Keep up the good work!
only works the first time i install it - from then on it quits every time i try to launch it - have to reinstall to get it going again - once only - then starts quitting again!
This is wicked! Can finally listen to nonstopplay.com on my mobile connected to the mp3 socket in the car!! :)
Works great on my E65. Just take the one for the E91. Thanks!
Would love to see mms:// stream work. I've been contemplating to buy any nokia model that can play the stream. I don't think an iphone can play this too.
It's working (almost) perfectly on my E61. Only problem is that it reboots my phone every now and then. Did someone noticed it? (maybe it's a problem with the phone itself since the official mobile YouTube also crashes my phone (A/V issue?)...
Aside from that, great app!!
Hi,
I confirm that E65 is playing with great success SmoothJazz.com radio thru Nokia Internet Radio.
Alex
It can't play premium radio streams... :(
How or when will it be able to do that?
As a side note:
I'm preety sure that who can afford to buy a WiFi/3G Symbian phone and also can pay a fat monthly subscription for unlimited/huge transfer limit... this person will be preety much inclined to use/pay for premium content...
Make the program able to pay premium content. If you can't make that for free, make it as a premium, some people will probably pay, I will.
Does BH-503 work with other bluetooth device with the same bluetooth standard Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
Can somebody please fix it? The Baroque station is wrong on the internet radio. Does someone know how I can fix it? or someone knows someone else has the power to change it? like the nokia ppl?
It's good .. but it does not support real player streaming...so i cant listen to bbc and a lot of others
also does not support mms
and lastly why is there a limit to the url of the radio station you want to type in, there is like a limit to the number of letters you can enter thus making it impossible for me to enter the whole address...
Hmm, it doesn't support .asx files either. So please improve comptability, most online news sites I use use .asx or .rm, or would you disagree?
Really superb!!! Works perfectly on my N73. Nice interface, excellent performance, 100% stable......I hope to see mms:// compatibility in the final release as this format becomes more and more popular.
Many thanks for your excellent work!!
This internet radio is almost great, but really isn't because of the lack of support for http authetication.
It's been mentioned once or twice, but could anyonen give some sort of a date when to expect support for http//username:password@stream inghost.com/stream.mp3?
I would be a happier man if this was supported.

Anyone have a link to the file for the N95 8GB?
The link on Nokia Europe is dead :o(
Hi,
NIR reboots my E71 when i try to switch stations while the current station is still being streamed. this does not happen if the current stream is stopped and another stream is opened.
Also, is there someway to use NIR as the tone for alarm???

I have just downloaded it. It works perfect.it installed within 5 mins..and i have already tried stations frm the UK, Pakistan and New Zealand..it is gr8...must have..

We all want an application that support Basic access authentication like: host/stream.mp3
http://username:password@local
I have a E51. Internetradio works fine. BUT one can not add URL's. After entering URL and a name for it one can not save it! I have tried I think every key but no, it do not save.
I have a E51. I have InternetRadioUpdate31_106.sis now installed. However, it is not possible to save ex. rtsp://rm-live.sr.se/broadcast /p2.rm The Internet-Radio must have http:// to beginn with. Please fix this so we can save 'sr.se' public radio in our NOKIA phones.
if you can't get your internet radio working try restarting your phone after downloading it. That's what happened to me.
mms suipport would be very good to have. I have it on my Windows based HTC phone
Still no Basic HTTP Authentication... :(((
