Nokia Location Tagger beta launched

Guest blogger: Antony Pranata, one of the primary forces behind Nokia Location Tagger
locationtagger.PNG

First of all, I would like to thank Tommi for giving me an opportunity to be his guest blogger. My name is Antony Pranata. I am currently working as a software engineer at Nokia. Some of you may already know me as the Screenshot guy or S60Tips.com blogger.

Why am I blogging here? Tommi has an idea of letting the team who develop the beta application to “talk” directly to the public. That’s the reason why I am here. I am part of the team who develop the Nokia Location Tagger application (thanks to Maarten) that we launched today.

That’s for the introduction part. Now, let’s talk about business. :)

Today, we proudly announce a new application for Nokia Beta Labs, Nokia Location Tagger. What is it all about? Nokia Location Tagger is a small application running on “selected” S60 3rd devices that allows you to tag pictures captured from Camera application with geographical coordinates from GPS. The tagging process itself is sometimes called geotagging or geocoding (see also this article at Wikipedia). Technically, the location information is stored in the EXIF header of your pictures (.jpg file).

What can we do with the tagged pictures? You can upload them to the photo sharing sites, such as Flickr, Panoramio and Picasa Web, so that your friends know where the pictures were taken. If you want to keep them private on your PC, some photo organizer applications, such as Picasa (combined with Google Earth), are able to display location information. Please read the instructions at Nokia Location Tagger web page.

locationtagger2.PNG

Just to give you a little bit of background, location tagging is planned to be a seamlessly integrated part of Nokia experience. Before we reach that point, we decided to release a standalone application to give you a sneak preview. We would like to hear your thoughts already now. What do you think about the product? Do you have any problems using it? What features do you want to have? Even if you don’t like it, please also tell us. :)

Note that Nokia Location Tagger will not be the final solution of Nokia experience. In the future, we will be “integrating” the user interface of location tagging into Camera and Gallery applications (no longer as a standalone application).

Enjoy tagging your pictures!

@Massimo: How did you upload your picture? Are you using Nokia Share Online? If yes, which version are you using? You have to use version 3.0 because the older version doesn't support geotagging. Also, did you re-size your pictures before uploading? If you did resize, there is a possibility that the GPS data lost.

flickr should be able to recognize GPS coordinate. You can check some sample pictures here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/nokialocationtagger/

@Paul: Have you activated geotagging import on your flickr? By default, flickr won't import any geotagging data due to privacy issue. Go to http://www.flickr.com/account/geo/exif/ to activate it.

I think Nokia are moving in the right direction when exploiting the GPS on the phone. I tried it yesterday and it works wonderfully in a non-intrusive way (I like the small icon that shows in the camera viewfinder). I uploaded a couple of photos to flickr and it showed them correctly on the map.

A couple of comments:

1. When I go the Settings on my N95 8GB the values are not centered in their fields, they're a bit low.

2. I'd like to see the Satellite Status added to check GPS quality.

Keep up the good work!

Great app! Actually I expected location tagging to be in the camera of GPS enabled Nokias from the beginning, but better late than never.

I hope, that in the final implementation enough attention is paid to the privacy aspect of adding location information to the pictures. If you put pictures of home and other things to the internet and forget the location info into the pictures, you could as well reveal your home address, your daily routines etc.

Great application. Seems to be similar to the Psiloc Photo Tagger, but that application failed to work on my N95 8GB.

One feature request: Could you make the tagging work for pictures in the gallery as well? (Start location tagger, open gallery, select picture, tag picture.)

I used it, uploaded geotagged image to flickr using latest version of share online, but it doesn't get mapped on flickr. Lat & Lon is visible in EXIF data, though. "Import Geotagged Pics" in flickr says I don't have any. What am I doing wrong?

Hi again Antony. I did some tests yesterday and NLT is defo slower than Maps at locating me. NLT feels like Maps did when it was first launched and before getting assisted by network.

I don't know if it has ANYTHING to do with this, but I am in Norway and on the Telenor network. I'll try it on a different handset today to see if it is hyperlocal (ie in my hand).

Apart from this, it is all working like a baby! (apart from the waking up at night wetting themselves bit)

I also experienced this. The Tagger took for ever to get a GPS-lock so i started Maps and it got a lock after a few seconds. As i'm in germany its not a norwegian problem.

Apart from that its a great app andsomethin i wanted since the start.

About E61 and 6110 compatibility, the team is investigating. We might have promised too much in the "should work but not fully tested" compatibility list...

Should the software use the Assisted GPS? For me it doesn't and it is enabled (yes I double checked). Getting a fix without this is kinda hard. It will take at least 5 minutes and the software stops searching by default after 5 minutes...

Good software, working well on the E90.

Is there a way to disable the short GPRS-connection on program startup (I think it is the AGPS thing)?

I've got no dataplan so I've to pay for any GPRS-data.

Thanks

#15 Antony Pranata Tue, 2008-01-29 16:14

@Martin R.: Yes, the GPRS icon is for A-GPS. You can actually disable A-GPS if you don't want to. Go to Tools | Settings | General | Positioning | Positioning Methods.

Hey Guys,

the Software is working well on N82. Maybe you add 30 minutes to GPS timeout.

But what I am realy missing is a to flickr comparable support for Picasa web Albums.

Thanks, finally it's here :)

Anyway, now that you have this working nicely, would it be easy to adjust the program to be able to tag photos afterwards too? Just take a .gpx from sports tracker and compare it to timestamp of a photo, then change the exif? And why would anyone want to do that? Take a card from your camera and put it into cardreader of your comp.. err phone and do the tagging.
At least I would use it :)

Nice software. But how about, u embed the Lat Long and Time and Date on the picture it self. That maybe useful. For now, to know when a picture is taken is seeing the metadata or date created. If the file is edited, the information is lost.

My wishlist would be to use A-GPS data as the approximate coordinates of where the picture was taken, for non GPS devices. I am quite fine with a few kilometers radius accuracy for geotagging pictures taken with my N81 or N93 for example.

Keep going.

Great work guys! I've been waiting for such a tool for a long time. It neatly fuses with the camera program and I need not worry about starting it every time I want to take a picture. The NLT greatly enhances our options to post our images to the web and to locate them.

It has been suggested to add the satellite status to check GPS quality. I think that's a good idea, it would probably be sufficient to just display the number of available satellites next to the small symbol that appears in the camera. Or maybe show the number of available satellites on a red (no GPS), yellow (satellites found but no lock) or green (satellites found and locked) background.

Keep up the good work! This goes to ALL the people at the Nokia Beta Labs!

Apple is using Wi-Fi positioning (www.skyhookwireless.com) with 1-2 second time to fix and it works indoors - two big areas where I see the GPS falling down. How can I geotag pictures in my flat, at a pub, in a museum - places where GPS flat out doesn't work - or if I have to wait a couple of minutes to get a fix? I hope you guys look at this from where and how users take pictures, not just where and how they take them WHEN GPS WORKS.

#29 Antony Pranata Wed, 2008-01-30 15:51

@Rocco: WiFi positioning is indeed an interesting thing to look at. There is always advantage and disadvantage of every solution.

WiFi positioning depends heavily on the reference database. For example, skyhookwireless.com solution currently works only in North America (although they're planning to roll out in Europe and Asia as well). It also works well on populated area only.

But yes, this is something interesting to look at.

@nayigeta: There are many comments about having support of cell-tower signal for pictures tagging. This will work for non-GPS devices as well as in situation where GPS signal is weak.

Installed and works ok on n958GB.

Minor comments:

1. GPS fix is slow and patchy (may be GPS issue) see enhancements request A.
2. UI in settings issue font does not fit dialog correctly
3. UI in settings issue dialog has now header and so appears to have a Main and Logs setting option.

Enhancement Request

A.Could you provide an option to tag with last know coordinates. when in camer app maybe 'last known' could be indicated by blue icon and be used to address patchy/slow gps and whenn indoors! While not ideal quite often an approximate position is better than no position!

B.In the log app could you add a properties option which would allow for viewing and maybe even editing coordiate info and maybe even adding other tags!

C.consider adding/integrating this app EVERYWHERE you can i mean it would be usefull to remember where i made voice recordings and where and when I added new contacts ie where i met people! hey while i'm at it i would love to know where i was when i recieved certain text messages or phone call.! ha ha The future has to be in CID for incomming calls ie not only showing caller ID but also Coordinates of caller but maybe that's a bit much for now ;)

D. Definately integrate into Maps app!

E. I know it's not your area but google/picasa google/panoramio online addin would e good for share app!

cheers

I tested Location Tagger with Nokia 6120 classic. The connection to my external GPS was OK. But no connection to the cell phone camera.
I hope that it is possible in the next release.

For all Navigator 6110 users currently left in the rain:
have a look at Photo Tagger from Psiloc. Works nicely and even renames the photos based on the current cell's name.

Still looking forward though for 'Location Tagger' to support the 6110 as well…

Hello,

I'm a reporter with the online journalism news website Journalism.co.uk. I came across Gnooze and would like to feature it in a new series on our site, in which we invite developers of pieces of technology or websites and web services that we think are of use to journalists (our readership) to effectively 'pitch' their ideas to us.

If that sounds agreeable to you, please could you send me your responses to the questions below:

1) Who are you and what's it all about?

2) Why would this be useful to a journalist?

3) Is this it, or is there more to come?

4) Why are you doing this?

5) What does it cost to use it?

6) How will you make it pay?

Feel free to submit any additional information, photos or videos, as we can run these with the piece. If you have any questions about our features, please get in touch.

Hope this is possible,

Laura Oliver

Hi. The program is great.
The only problem I have is, that pictures taken with the GPS coordinates are not recognised by flickr, even though I've set flickr to allow geotags to be used.

I know that the tags are stored in the picture by looking at the exif date. The geotagged pictures do work on locr.com though.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or is anyone else having the same problems.

Thanks,
Massimo

Great idea, but I it would fantastic to merge the project with the Sports Tracker functionality. By matching timestamps with the track data you could geotag pictures made (and uploaded to the memory card) with a separate dSLR, not just the built-in Camera app.

The last co-ordinates within 10 minutes of clicking a picture is taken, in the case of unavailability of co-ordinates. But what if you are indoors for a party where the gps doesnt work at all. Capturing moments of the party with the location tags and then checking it out in panaromia would be awesome. My suggestion: Say you are going for a party:

open the location tagger app. when you are in apartment, stand near the window where you can lock onto the satellites and get your co-ordinates. Once you have the co-ordinates, give the option of saving the co-ordinates with a tag name to identify which co-ordinate is for which place (just like for landmarks in Maps). Now introduce an offline mode. This is done so that the app doesnt look for satellite and waste battery when you already know that there is now way you can get a gps signal inside the appartment.

So for example you are near a window and lock on and get your co-ordinates. Name the co-ordinate as 'Gaurav's Home'. Now using options: Get into offline mode. (For the camera icon of location tagger during clicking a picture you can give it a different color, like pink or something). Once in the offline mode (in the location tagger app) choose the location you want, in this case, Gaurav's Home. Now open the camera, you will see the location tagger icon in pink, indicating offline mode. Happily click pictures with the right co-ordinates in the EXIF. Upload your party pictures and rock !! :)........

Second suggestion: I live in India and application for seamlessly integrating photos is 'vox'. Can you guys work with panoramio and provide the seamless upload option? The interface of panoramio is very clean.

What's the relationship between this tool and the feature that allows Sports Tracker users to upload pictures to their training diary? Those pictures seem to be geotagged, too. Do both applications add their own tags?

· To top · Sign in to post comments.
#53 Hugo Mon, 2008-01-28 11:39

Harri -- I think Sport Tracker just matches up the timestamp of the photo with the known location, they don't embed the geotag in the EXIF. It'd be good if it could though.

#54 Tommi Vilkamo Mon, 2008-01-28 11:46

Hugo is right. Sports Tracker doesn't write the location data to the EXIF header of the picture files (at least not yet).

It'd be cool if it only activates when the camera application launches. I get the impression Autostart is on the phone startup? That way, it wont use GPS and battery constantly trying to launch, and saves having to load it manually.

I'm sure once integrated this will be the way it works anyway, but it'd still be cool - Thanks for this guys, Nokia continue to impress me with this kind of stuff. To think, i spent 3 years swearing by windows mobile until i get my N95... Ohh dear. :P

It seemed to work a lot faster when I had my GPS started with Nokia Maps first, which makes me think that Location Tagger took me back to those first weeks of disappointment with the N95 GPS.

#59 Antony Pranata Mon, 2008-01-28 15:52

@Liam Gladdy: You are right. The "auto-start" feature is for the phone start-up.

About the battery, actually Nokia Location Tagger has an "automatic turn-off" feature. If you don't use Camera application for a while, it will turn off your GPS module automatically. You can set the duration for the timeout from the Settings menu (2 mins, 5 mins or 10 mins).

Let's say, you choose 5 minutes (the default one). This means if you don't activate Camera application within 5 minutes, GPS module will be turned off. Next time, you activate Camera application, it will be turned on. Then, the timer will start again for 5 minutes.

· To top · Sign in to post comments.
#60 Antony Pranata Mon, 2008-01-28 15:56

@Pål Bråtelund: That is the problem with GPS module. It takes a while to initialize. You can activate A-GPS feature on N95 (your firmware should support it). A-GPS normally help to lock the position faster.

Actually, you don't really need Nokia Maps to activate GPS module. You can just bring Nokia Location Tagger to the foreground so "activate" your GPS module.

But I agree with you that the GPS module takes a while to initialize.

Another issue - I had this on sitting in my office (as its intended for integration I assume its designed to run all the time). After 5 minutes it gave up searching which is fine because theres no chance in getting a lock in my office :) What I don't understand is when I start to use the phone again it starts searching - surely the app can't be designed to use gps the whole time its switched on - my batteries would barely last an hour! Shouldn't it wait until a picture is taken to look for a lock again?

#64 Fernando Mon, 2008-01-28 16:14

Looks good, I just want it integrated into the camera app, but you already said you were doing it. Maybe put an option in the gallery, that takes a old pic and tags it with the current location. So you can just tag a pic if you forgot to tag it when you took it, but you are in the same place it was taken.

· To top · Sign in to post comments.
#65 Antony Pranata Mon, 2008-01-28 17:12

@Pål Bråtelund: That's a bit strange. The API used to lock GPS position is the same. It is also the same API for third party applications (available in S60 SDK).

Anyway, I'll try to investigate this further.

Great idea, and something i've been waiting for. Unfortunately it seems to have no effect on my Nokia 6110 Navigator. I can start the app and it gets a GPS fix, but activating the camera doesn't show me an icon, and the pictures aren't geotagged. I know the 6110 isn't officially supported, but given that it's one of just 3 phones with built-in GPS i was hoping it might work anyway.

thanks for the effort anyway.

@Gaurav: Thanks for your comment. Support for indoor positioning is already in our top priority because many users are asking for it. We are still looking into it; for now I can only say "stay tune". :)

Hi all, we're in the process of releasing a new beta version of Nokia Location Tagger.

It has many bug fixes, support for more devices, improved usability and "Show on map" feature. :)

The plan is to release it next week (i.e. week of 24-Feb). So... stay tune.

Tested the location tagger on a N95 8GB using a bluetooth GPS (Holux brand), and it worked. However, when starting the maps application after taking a few pics the phone reebooted.

Hi there, Is there any way to send the captured image that has been tagged to another Nokia S60 GPS enabled phone and open the image and see imediatly either on Nokia Maps or Google maps where the picture was taken. I think it was new Garmain phone that had this option in their new phone.

Antony,

great apps, good work. I see that Beta 2 provides one of the most requested feature: Show on Map. (Jakarta map, BTW, is great).

I also notice that the Log gets cleared up after I restart the Location Tagger application, so I lost track of the photos that I tagged. Probably this will get fixed in the future integration with Gallery. So we always know what we have geo-tagged.

Salam dari Indonesia!

Are there plans to allow the tagger to automatically tag images which don't have a gps lock at the time they're taken? I.e.

1) Take Picture
2) Tagger Searches for GPS
3) Tagger gets gps within X minutes and tags photo

Without it I can't see this software ever being useful, I mean - who can wait five minutes for a lock before taking a picture?!

@Alex: We'll be supporting Nokia Maps soon. We just need to do some paper work to get it out to the public. Yes, there is licensing agreement with the maps provider that needs to be done. Just stay tune for the next update.

Thanks for the reply Anthony! Can't wait till that feature comes out :D Seeing as I'm being picky I guess I should also mention it seems to be rather easy to accidentally close it at the moment. And there seems to be no way to see if its using GPS other than switching to it, which seems to activate the GPS?

I have just installed Tagger on my E90 and I would like to know what the format of the Lat/Long numbers is. It looks like this 24 5711.93 an I need to change that to a format that Google maps understands.
Also the Exif data shows 0:0:0 in the GPS Timestamp field.

I've got a problem with the Nokia location tagger in combination with my N82 and Share Online 3.0.
I uploaded a tagged photo via Share Online to flickr. Unfortunately, it shows the wrong position on the map.
The same picture tagged and uploaded with ShoZu shows the right position on the map.
As I have taken the photo, Nokia Maps (on my mobile) pointed at the right position on the map, therefore the GPS
coordinates must be OK.

You'll find examples here,

Any ideas what the problem is? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Antony
We are just launching a new website http://www.london5151.com were visitors will be able to download over 14,000 geotagged images of London streets and PoI's. My question (apologies in advance if already answered elsewhere) can a geotagged image (I assume you are using the standard lat/long fields in the exif header) be used as a navigation destination in the maps app whether it be a user generated image or (for example) one of our images downloaded to the device.

Thanks in advance

Tim

@Tim: You web site is great!
Unfortunately, it is not possible yet to use image as destination for navigation.

Hi Antony.

Have you made up any thoughts on how to preserve geo-data when image is sent by MMS? Wouldn't it be possible to scrape the EXIF for lat/long and add it in the message text, a bit like sending places from Maps?

That would sort a lot out for us that has "Send your tips and images to us"-services (like newspapers and TV-stations).

Hi Antony

Thanks for the quick response and nice comment. You said 'it is not possible yet' does that imply that it will be added to maps at some point? OK I am biased as we produce geotagged content ;-) but being able to use geotagged pictures (whether our content or user generated) as PoI's for navigation seems such a logical step. BTW Navman supports geotagged pictures and Garmin has announced support on their nuvifone.

@Tim: I cannot comment further on that. It is definitely a useful feature to be able to use geotagged pictures for navigation or stored them are landmark.

#87 Antony Pranata Wed, 2008-04-02 16:42

@Pal: It is a problem because currently MMS application discards the geotag information. It was also the case with the previous Nokia Share Online (2.0) -> which has been fixed in version 3.0. The solution for MMS would require firmware upgrade because the application is on the ROM. I'll forward your comment to the "right person".

How to post in on this site ?

Super. I think preserving geodata with the MMS will be crucial functionality in the future. If my friends can invite me to a cafe by sending a photo from there - and I can pick it up in Nokia Maps and find my way there - now, that would be something :)

Anything labeled "NEW" and/or "IMPROVED" isn't. The label means the
price went up. The label "ALL NEW", "COMPLETELY NEW", or "GREAT NEW"
means the price went way up.

i'm not having any problems tagging things per say, i get the icon and it does show the lat long co-ordinates, but when i want to see where the tag is on a map on my nokia 6110 this application “fires off” the built in los angeles map purchased from route66 store (in the navigator program)is there a way to make nokia maps(stored on my memory card) the default mapping program ? i currently have 1.0 (not the beta)

I have only two remarks on this application
1. I would like to have an option of using the last known coordinates however old they are. Or to adjust the last known timeout to several hours. This would be useful when taking pictures in the disco or in appartment ore somewhere indoors. Having to get out before taking a picture makes it difficult to use.
2. I would like to disable the feature of turning the GPS off after few minutes. This is not good when another application uses the GPS in the same time.

Nokia Location Tagger worked perfectly with Flickr.com and was able to cross post to LiveJournal and Facebook. Flickr even auto posted the GPS location on the map. The application worked falsely and integrated with the camera without a hitch. Exactly what I was looking for and worked perfectly. Great job!
