Introducing Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta

Guest blogger: Martin Ramsin from Nokia Maps team

I am proud to announce the Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta!

maps2.PNG

“Drive” is what we call the new and beautiful car navigation feature. It looks great and is easy to use while driving: change “views” by clicking left or right, select functions from a “grid” menu. The Drive interface is transparent black and the turning arrows dynamically show the exact angle of the turn. Check out driving time and average speed for your journey and plan multiple stopover routes.

I’m very excited about a new feature that we call “Walk”. It lets you find your way in the city when you are on foot. It is easy to use and discreet (no voice instructions). Small “breadcrumbs” are shown where you have been walking so you easily see what direction to take. “Walk” is included in the navigation license for car navigation but can also be purchased separately. If you have already purchased car navigation with older Maps version, you will now get “Walk” free of charge!

The beta offers satellite maps in 200 cities worldwide. Satellite maps can be turned on when browsing the map and also in “Walk”. The satellite maps are downloaded over the air and are saved automatically. Next time you start Maps the satellite maps will be there, no need to download them again.

The search is much, much improved. It is now as simple as typing part of street names or a place in a search box. Search results are listed by category (addresses, cities, restaurants etc.)

Places are personal. You are now able to save places as favorites, create collections (folders for places) and even save your routes.

What else? Better 3D mode and overall faster, better, and more beautiful :)

Upgrading to Maps 2.0 Beta is easy. You can continue using your old maps and licenses. It is also possible to upgrade your map data using the new Map Loader (also provided from beta labs). You need to run the Maps beta once first in the phone before connecting to PC.

Grab Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta while it is hot and let us know what you think about it!

Note that since this is a beta, some less important functions may be ‘limited’. We are still working on the traffic feature for car navigation. We’ll keep you posted when that gets available too.

Tip 1: Shortcut keys in the map

  • Use * and # keys to zoom in and out in the map
  • Use to 0 key to go to “My position”
  • Use the 1 key to change map modes (2D, 3D, Satellite, Hybrid)

Tip 2: Shortcut keys in Drive mode

  • The “grid” (options menu) layout imitates the keyboard. Items in the grid are also accessible directly through the keyboard.
  • The same shortcuts are also available in Walk

  1. Looking good, but missing the navigate to contact option. Correct?

  4. BTW on Nokia N95, updated without any problems

  5. So the free “Find route” option is now gone? Or is it just very well hidden?

Also, does the new UI take more space from the map screen or am I just imagining things (hard to compare with the old version)?

Feature suggestion: put sat status and download counter on transparent overlays on the corners of the map space, and then pop out the search box only if I start typing.

  6. tried to install over the older version - the same error as in case of #2 (device is E61i)

    Comment by nbelousov — February 11, 2008 @ 1:17 pm

  7. Jani: 6110 has Route66 maps not Nokia Maps, so try to install the .sis meant for devices without old maps app.

nbelousov: E61i is S60 3rd edition, not S60 3rd edition fp1, so Maps 2.0 Beta does not support it.

    Comment by Anssi — February 11, 2008 @ 2:14 pm

  10. First findings: Nokia Maps looks more mature now and working with it seems more easy and intuitive. Navigating though is still odd sometimes. It seems maps are not accurate or navigating over it is strange. Nokia Maps still makes me take turns that might be shorter for a bird, but not for a car. Still have to take three left turns to get to my home while just going straight on is only 50 meters and allowed. I wonder what criteria it uses to calculate the quickest way to a navigation point. It makes me go to places that just not seem logical and absolutely not the quickest way.

  14. Just tried on my N95 :

on first start, it asked me if I want to connect to update license information (or something like that), I said yes. After a little time, it tells me “3 days trial activated”. What ?!? I do NOT want start my trial now… the message didn’t tell clearly that trial will be activated…

Then I tried to search for an adress, select “Walk to”, then after some disclamers the map show up with the message “Calculating route”… I let it 10 minutes calculating route, but no results (yes, I had a GPS fix ;)

    I’ll retry later…

  17. Not sure if there is an official place to submit feedback on map data, if there is please let me know.

The maps for Guernsey, Channel Islands seem to be using TeleAtlas data which seems to be highly inaccurate, incomplete and nowhere near good enough to be usable. I know that Navteq do have useable maps so I am not sure why you are not using them, since they are one of your sources.

  41. Is it possible to get the beta version working with an N73? I’ve been trying even though it’s not listed as compatible and had mixed success (it’s installed, won’t open).

If this version is completely incompatible with the N73 is there any chance of a compatible one in future or is the end for us ‘old school’ users?

  42. N82 came bundled with 3 months of free navigation. After upgrading Maps 2.0 said I have a 3 DAY trial?!
I had tens of days left and the FAQ states I can get it from Options. I got no note “xxx-day license activated”, I get “Update: Update completed”.

-Did I just loose tens of days without warning?
-How can I see how many days there are left?

  45. I’ve found a bug here on my E90. When I switch application to internal display, key order is not right. I see Exit and Options on the right side of the display, but the key to use Exit does not correspond to it but to Options and viceversa.
When I use Nokia Maps with the internal display, the UI is too much slow.
    * and # to use Zoom does not work properly with internal display. I see # is - and * is + but when I press * the zoom is - and when i press # nothing happens. * works without “Maiusc” and # doesn’t work without “Maiusc”. Anyway with Maiusc+# zoom is step-by-step, this means I have to press everytime I want to zoom Maiusc+#, so it’s not continuative. Zoom-bar does not work too in communicator mode. GPS-Signal is still empty also when position is recognized, but I cannot navigate because it says “it’s waiting for gps-signal”.

I am using n95 8GB and just install maps 2 beta seems to work fine. Regarding uninstall it seems to work fine too.

    Here what i did:

    1. Menu (switch button)
    2. Application
    3. Select Maps and Press C key
    4. Just follow the instructions from there.

Or maybe it is just my lucky day :)

  59. Hi,
    Early impressions:
    1. Full marks to Mokia Beta Labs for providing this beta for testing via this site.
    2. The one-box search doesn’t recognise UK Post Codes. Please will you fix this, as the UK post code is the single most useful search criterion for UK navigation. For example, house number and postcode is equivalent to a full address, and can be eneterd in 7-10 characters plus spaces.
    3. When I search, it shows places that are many miles away, under “Walk” search results. Why is this - is it a bug?
    4. It now seems to find People in the search, from a data source on the web. However, it does not know about me, even though I’m listed in the phone book. What is this data source, used to find people? We need to know that in order to know what to expect that it will and won’t find.
    5. I’ve read all the documentation provided at this site, but there is plenty in the new version that I cannot find described or explained anywhere. Can you please provide more documentation somewhere, as without this it’s hard to test it and know what it’s supposed to do!
    6. Before I first used the new version, I downloaded the new maps to my memory card, using the new maploader 1.3.5. It worked OK, until I went into settings, and “Check for Map updates”, which said that my maps were not up to date and deleted all my map data. This must be a bug.
    7. On the plus side, with the new version, the routing is different (probably better!). I’ve just been taken a rather complicated but quick and completely new route to a destination I’ve often been to using the old version.
    6. Unfortunately I find the new drive interface less clear, and less attractive than that for Maps 1.0. Most of the sybmbols and indicators are much smaller, and seem designed for a device with a bigger screen than the N95. The direction indicators on the map on the old version, in 3d mode, were shown “above” the road, which was great and made them really stand out. On the new version, in 3d mode the turn indicators are flat on the road, and so don’t stand out and are much less clear and interesting as a result.
The black background colour in Maps 2.0 is less attractive than the pleasant blue of Maps 1.0. You describe the black as “transparent black” - but it is not transparent it’s opaque. Transparent would be better.
I think you need to provide some options to the user, to choose colours, and sizes of text and symbols.
    7. “Favourites” has far smaler text than the old “Landmarks”. This is too small, and again, you should provide options for people who need it bigger. (Also, please provide documentation about how you expect we will use “collections”. What’s this for - is it another kind of category (.e.g. Work Locations etc)?
    8. It’s a pity that you hide away the “fastest” and “shortest” options in settings. It should be easier to switch between these, whenever you use drive, as at different times people want different settings, and you need to be aware whenever you use “Drive” of which setting its currently using. I’ve been caught out sometimes with a very complicated route because it was still set to “shortest” when I wanted “fastest”. When you select “drive” it should show the currently selected option, such that you can either leave it as it is, or change it. This would be an easy but big imrpovement to usability.
That’s all for now, but I may have more later.

    Comment by Geoff — February 12, 2008 @ 3:08 am

  60. I am currently living in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and frequently use the navigation feature when driving around in Malaysia and Singapore.

The new version 2.0 seems very much improved and I was looking forward to an improved navigation experience as well. I am surpriced to find that the navigation feature for Singapore/Malaysia has been removed in the update. Will navigation for Singapore/Malaysia be included later and if so also during the beta period ?. I know that the “Walk” navigation probably need quite some additional information, but could it not be possible to have “Drive” navigation only then for Singapore/Malaysia as is already possible in version 1.2 ?

Furthermore after the update (without any problems) I decided to erase all my maps and then downloaded them again using maploader 1.3.5, just for good measure. I found that the map files were smaller in size, which I concluded could have been due to better compression or similar, however I found that this was because the detailing has been decreased. Many streets in Johor Bahru have been removed, including my home address, and Singapore only show streets with blue background and not the nice detailing of green areas etc as in version 1.2. Maybe a bug?.

I rolled back to version 1.2 and downloaded maps again and then re-updated to version 2.0. By doing this I then had the “old maps” again, but still missing the navigation.

For now I am back with version 1.2, but hope the Singapore/Malaysia is included again such that I can start using version 2.0 :-)

  61. drop the search box, it takes up screen space. it should only display when you start to type. only briefly tested so far but when i did a search for my local pub (by name) it suggested a place with a similar name in Singapore, this was in the ‘walk’ result. thats probably about a 6000 km walk from where i am! it seems better in may ways so far but i really dont like the search box on display all the time.

  64. Good comments, Geoff [59]. Please, Nokia, take note of the UK Post Codes request. This really is the quickest, simplest way to enter and seasrch for an address. Much of the time British users will have a post code to enter.

Also agree regarding the interface changes and colour - this is a backward step on Maps 2.0

    Comment by Jezzer — February 12, 2008 @ 10:26 am

  65. My 3 yr. license is not accepted with this. When I try to enter license code it says something like “License is already in use”.
Can we clear the argument here?
Will we be able to use our prev. license with this? (I mean both drive & walk) or past license can only work as “walk” ?

  66. Has the free tool, calculate route been pulled then ? thats very disappointing if so

    Comment by PAul — February 12, 2008 @ 1:20 pm

  67. Very interesting update. Though seems to be not so easy UI as earlier version. Cannot see any satelite view (E90 latest firmware). The biggest problem is the very small text which is impossible to read in the car when you are driving. The speed figures etc should be diplayed MUCH BIGGER so you can read them without problems. Otherwise promising improvements.

    Comment by Nickem — February 12, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

  68. @levent:
I did not have to re-enter my 3-yr license. It was automatically accepted.

    @Paul:
I am also missing the calculate route function. Will this come back in future versions?

  69. @ Jan - looked at older posts seems others are missing too, it would be extremely disappointing if they pulled this!

  70. To calculate a route do the following:

Select a place. Add–> to route
    options–> add stopover
    Select a new place
Make sure the transport mode is right, or change it and go back to go back to the route
    Options—> show route

  73. Paul - no, I can’t see an option to do that.

I do remember that option but never used it… I only got my phone on Saturday!

    Comment by James King — February 12, 2008 @ 2:33 pm

  74. On E90:
    - VERY slow on internal large screen (Google Maps is fast and smooth, but internal Nokia developers don’t even come close…)
    - reversed buttons (as mentioned in other posts)
    - very small fonts = unreadable in car
    - downloaded data counter cut in half, bottom half invisible
    - somehow navigation does not work for Poland any more (it did in ver. 1) - you could post that info here, so I do not install software that breaks what worked before
    - automatically activated 3-day trial without even asking me

To summarize - this seems like early alfa, not beta (never even tested on E90). VERY long way to go to even approach my TomTom on usability/interface/speed. Maybe on maps 5 this thing will be worth something…

  75. Why has the 3 year subscription been removed?..Other options are NOT available for the mapping.
The price for a single year is too expensive.

    Comment by Anand Patel — February 12, 2008 @ 3:19 pm

  76. Have to agree with some of the previous comments. This seems like alfa, not beta release, coded by in someone’s basement by a teenage kid.
    - On my E90 the buttons are reversed (they haven’t even tested in on the E90)
    - Data counter icon cut in a half, can’t see it properly (what a joke)
    - small unreadable fonts
    - simple navigation taken away
    - subscripton based navigation
    - search is a joke of all jokes. It could not find my bank which is 2km away from my house, instead it found another bank 10 km away!

What a lame excuse for an app. I wonder what the Nokia boys are smoking. What idiot will pay subscription for navigation on a garbage product when you can just purchase tomtom, garmin, route 66 and use it forever?

Memo to the coders: go have a look at proper software such as tomtom, garmin.

  83. Well, call this software Alpha release since it does not deserve to be called beta. Shame Nokia. Navigating is unreliable, completely unreliable. Today I plotted a trip of about 200km. I could not get Nokia Maps to place me on a road. “Not on a road” was in my screen. Though it seemed the route was calculated. Driving about 2km and let Nokia Maps plot a route home was no problem. Recalculating to my destination 200km further on gave the same message: “Not on a road”. Sorry, this navigation software is a complete buggy peace of crap. Not worth one Dollar.

  84. Interesting new release, using it in the UK on my Nokia E90.

Is there an official beta forum I can participate in so I can submit bug reports etc. on a more formal basis?

I’ve participated extensively in beta programmes for other (unrelated) vendors in the past.

    Comment by Ben Rose — February 12, 2008 @ 10:12 pm

  85. To add to my previous post, zoom-in barely works on E90 internal screen - Shift + 8 = * - not very comfortable. Zoom-out does not work at all, so you better zoom in wisely :)

And I think this is not a good idea to use at least 10% of screen estate for “always on” search bar, useless 99% of a time. Most Nokia phone screens are small and low res (320×240 is a step backward from E60/70).

This should definitely be an Alpha release, I am pretty sure it was never tried even once on E90 - the flaws are just to obvious.

  91. Further comments following my earlier ones at#59 above:
    1. A usability bug which is a very significant annoyance remains from Maps 1.0 - please will you fix it in 2.0 - as follows: When selecting Addresses from Contacts, on pressing search, it refuses to search unless a Country name is entered every time a selection is made, and has no default. The Country name is a long list and takes time to select. This is very tedious. Please change this so that if the country name is blank, it uses the last used, a default, or the last country detected via GPS.
    2. On a related note, please add “From Contacts” to the main Search page, instead of under “Options” within the Address Search. There is room on the Search page, and the ability to search from contacts is an obvious plus for a phone-based Navigation product, over a dedicated product. So don’t hide it away like an afterthought that takes more keypresses to use - put it there on the main search page.
    3. There is a bug when using Routes, that crashes the N95 and causes it to reboot itself.
    4. On the the “Route” page, the entry labelled “Drive is misleading. This in fact takes you to Route settings, and should be labelled accordingly.
    5. Whereas the new GPS indicator now provides more signal strength information, it’s hard to see, especially when driving and it’s against a light map background with full signal strength. A much simpler, more informative and easier to read indicator would be to show the number of satellites, like Google Maps does. One digit is all that is needed.
    6. Instead of having to press Options key to go to commonly used functions, like “Show Route”, wouldn’t it me much neater to offer also a shortcut of using the greeen phone button as a “Go” “Select” or “Yes” key, like for example you can in the Messages Application? This button could be very useful yet is surprisingly neglected by application developers.
    7. The “Route Info” facility is a nice new addition, but:
    a. On the N95 there is a highlighted rectangle over “Trip distance” (which can be moved using the cursor) but which is much too light coloured and makes it very hard to read to information it covers.
Also, the cursor movement is not properly implemented - you can only move using the right and left on the joystick and not up and down.
Further, the select button does nothing - you have to press “options” to access “Reset”. Please change this so that pressing the select button brings up the question “Reset?”. This would be much more intuitive.
    b. It provides information which would be most useful at the end of the journey - BUT it is only available in drive mode, and as soon as you reach your destination, drive mode ends and the Route Info option is no longer available. Please will you change this so that the data from the last “Drive” is retained and can be accesses, and ideally saved or exported (maybe in CSV format) to another application such as a Spreadsheet or Expenses log.
    8. The “Maps Tutorial” option on the N95 does nothing.
    9. I’m pleased that other people have endorsed my comments in #59 above, especially the postcode issue in the Search box. I can’t over-emphasise the importance of providing this for UK users. Google Maps does this - so I’m sure Nokia Maps developers can compete with Google’s people, and provide the same functionality!
    10. The convenient keyboard shortcuts only work in Drive mode, because when not in drive, it defaults to Search box input. Please provide an option to toggle the Aearch box open and closed, and when closed, provide the keyboard shortcuts that aren’t dependent on Drive mode - for example 2d-3d toggle, day-night toggle, volume, Route Info (see 7 above) etc.

  98. map 2.0 is very good,i love it! but some features could be better or are missing:

-when i choose the walk feature, most times there is not the possibility to walk through pedestrian streets, if the programm calculates the route it shows a longer way around the pedestrian zones, it should calculate the direct way
-walk feature (the feature i only use beacuse i have no car) Time to destination is not very exact (it would be great if it recalcs depending on the walking speed and stores the middle walking speed)
-there should be a description of the path (next streets to destination and so on) to choose….as a list or so
-there should be different driving or walking styles , walk fast, middle, slow
-voice commands for the walk feature would be also great
-would be great, if you could choose the way of calculating the route like fastest way, shortest way, directly way
-maybe a flag it function to store/save locations i pass
-maybe a possibility to store home/work

  110. Well done for an excellent product.
I successfully installed the update, and updated the maps and licence on my N95 with no problems.
I use the satnav feature a lot while driving so was pleased with the improvements made. The new Blocked function for recalculating a route is very useful, but for safer driving it should be directly mapped to a grid key and not put in a sub menu.
The satellite status indicator is much more useful than the previous versions as (I presume) it shows the number of satellites / fix quality.
I also tried the new Walk feature and found it useful - it would be good to merge this with the Sports Tracker application.
A ‘must have’ upgrade if you’re an N95 owner.

  111. “Nokia sees that location based experiences, such as mapping and navigation are to be a fundamental platform in mobile devices going forward.”

Nokia should sort this out then.

I’m afraid it hasn’t persuaded me to replace Google maps on the active standby shortcut, not by a long way. It’s still too slow and the map is quite ugly, not nice to use at all.

Also why restrict “my location” to GPS? GPS rarely works, at least on N95. Google maps finds the location within a couple of seconds through the NW - accurate enough at least to save having to manually go to wherever you are at to seach for things.

    Comment by Peter Nielsen — February 14, 2008 @ 1:14 am

  116. Not a bad job, keeping in mind that it is a beta. I particularly agree with the majority of comments made by Geoff in #59 and #91.

Some issues I have noticed (Using N95 8GB latest FW):

    1. When searching, the predictive text function is not right. That is, there is no way that I can see to select a different word. If you type in ‘he’ but wanted ‘if’ you don’t seem to be able to change the word using the (*+) key.

    2. Search also returns some strange results. If I have a GPS fix on my location and search for Mongolia (looking for Mongolian BBQ restaurant) I get the following results;
FAV: Shows 4 results but they are really just 2 I have saved and then duplicated by the search. It should easily be able to tell that the 2 search results are the same as my saved landmarks.
WALK: Shows 2 results, however, they are not the 2 landmarks I saved. Moreover, they are not walking distance being 17,200km and 17,900km away and they are overseas! At least I will have built up an appetite by the time I get there.
Guide: shows 7 results ranging from 8,700km to 18,000km.
PLACES: Shows 25 results. 4 of those are in Australia (where I am) ranging 325km to 1,000km away. The rest are overseas up to 12,200km away.
Clearly those sorts of results are ridiculous, by foot I would not want to see more than maybe 5km and maybe about 10-15km by car and I think that would be the extreme.

    3. I don’t like the fact that I cant scroll when navigation is going (unless I am missing something here). I find it useful to be able to scroll ahead when stopped in traffic to get an idea of where I am going or sometimes to decide if I want to choose an alternative route. Obviously this functionality was take away because the left/right cursor is used to change views, however, I think the click to view option is fine.

    4. I haven’t had a chance to check the maps in a large city but the maps in the little town I live in have gone backward. In Armidale, NSW, Australia, Lynches Rd continues to Kellys Plains Rd and did so on the previous maps but not these. Proctor also continues to Lynches and Judith does not break. As they are in this version, it reflects the old map from about the 1950’s. a quick look in Sydney and Brisbane seems to indicate that the maps are current, there also seems to be more, and more accurate, POI’s for both those cities.

    5. its not clear to me how Fav Routes work. Already stored in the Fav routes folder is ‘Drive [no motorway]’ but I did not enter this nor can I see how to add to it. Maybe I’m blonde.

    6. We also seem to have lost the show route option that previously existed, again, I found this useful for planning. Maybe its still there and I’m having another blonde moment.

    7. I would love to know what specifically ‘Fastest’ ‘Shortest’ and ‘Economical’ mean. When I navigate to a point in my town the ‘fastest’ option is a very strange route. This is perhaps something to do with the street errors I mentioned above but the previous maps still showed a better way if I selected alternate route. Using either ‘shortest’ or ‘economical’ showed exactly the same route and is certainly a route I would choose but not the best. Again this might be to do with the map errors mention before.

    8. I’m not yet sold on the ‘Walk to’ thing yet as it just seems to plot a ‘Drive to’ route. Maybe it should plot ‘bread crumbs’ in red and white ‘bread crumbs’ for the actual walk. Example: if I plan a ‘Walk to’ from one side of a park to the other it just plans a route around the block instead of going through the park.

Overall I think it’s a promising improvement and it will be very interesting to see the next beta. Perhaps we have been spoiled by the very good beta applications we have had of late but this version seems more alpha to me. I hope my comments help.

  120. Nice application….needs tweaking here and there.

Regarding TRAFFIC INFO, why not use the build in FM radio of most phones to get the TMC info that most navigation systems use, instead of this data heavy RTTI system you’ve implemented now.

A TMC option would be free to use and not dependable on downloading data.

I would like a possibility to easy delete unwanted (superfluous) items in Favourites and Addresses

    Comment by Ole — February 14, 2008 @ 6:35 pm

  122. @Jake[120]: “…would be free to use…” I think you’ve stumbled on the impediment there. Technically, the FM receiver in the phones may not be able to interpret TMC data. Practically, that’d be removing one more source of income for them. They charge for every little aspect of this application (and on a subscription basis, too)! Using basic navigation over the lifetime of this phone (~3 yrs?) costs more than the phone itself.

  128. Though Generally speaking Nokia Maps 2.0 is a pretty impressive application, including pretty neat UI features, there are quite a few things to be improved as well. For instance, speed, especially scrolling across the map (and it’s not just loading the tiles, I mean smoothens of the UI more). Also I would wish, that Nokia would go trough Garmin’s iQue Pocket PC application for reference, for instance, their “3D map” feature is really well implemented compared to Nokia’s. For instance I don’t need the clouds Nokia is giving on the upper part of the 3D view, but all the space on the screen is important.

Another thing, which could make Nokia Maps really stand out, would be inclusion of some, atleast some simple, topologymap features in detailed map views. It shouldn’t be too hard, and make map much more usefull for a pedestrian use. Another cool idea, which I really would like to see, is one where I could search for other Nokia Maps users… or I could select certain Nokia Maps users to be shown at the map. All the hardware for such feature should be allready there, so why it’s not included, it’s so obious and cool?

  135. I’ve used it now for 3 days on my Nokia N95 classic coupled to a Garmin GPS 10.and these are my findings:

Installed fine and downloaded and installed the maps for the middle east without any difficulty.
I like the interface, i find it clear and informative.

What i really don’t like is the fact that when navigating it zooms in too close so i can actually see on the map what the next turning is. What i would really like to see is auto zoom to allow the zoom level to automatically change to allow me to see my current position and the next turn, but still allowing me to manually override the zoom level.

It is still not possible to set the map to show direction up it will still only show north up unless you have set a route.

Some of the instructions are a bit bizarre. In particular the instruction ‘at the next possibility turn left’ Why not just say take the next left?

It would also be great if as well as telling you which turn to take it tells you a sign post direction. e.g. take the third exit signposted Airport.

When you purchase the navigation option in the Middle East it still does not show you correctly what currency you are being charged in.

  140. I was really disappointed when I noticed that the 3-year Western Europe navigation license I bought some time ago is no longer valid. Ditto for the Eastern Europe (Baltic countries) license. Do I have to purchase all these countries again, separately each, and do it again after one year?

  142. On my N95 8GB the zoom is not working properly, or is this feature? While navigating it just zooms in or out for half second and then flips back. I cannot hold the zoom level I would like.
And why changed the licenses? I would like to have West-Europe in one package, not buying each country, plus traffic included…

  143. Hi!
Can’t be true that Nokia releases something like Maps2.0. It’s not even close to beta quality… It’s more like an early R&D version made by summer trainees.
    In E90:
    - exit and menu buttons are mixed on the PDA side
    - I cannot use navigation at all! If I’m using Search/Address, it let me to exit or look at the user manual only. There are no other alternatives available. I cannot use navigation or look at the location on map, for instance.

The one who is responsible on releasing Maps2.0 must reconsider his position and responsibilities carefully! Releasing that kind of R&D version is very irresponsible and harmfully for the company.

  144. Hi,

I tried using maps 2.0 on N95 while driving I also had navicore system running. My experience with both this system in use simultaneously is:

    1. Navicore however old (software version from 2005) has more data than the Nokia maps 2.0, I was looking for Ilmakuja (in Finland) this street has been existing for as far as I can remember.
    2. Application of Navicore to let user search for a street without requiring the street number is an excellent feature and should be added to Nokia maps2.0 as well

    3. On the application side the color and design on Nokia maps 2.0 looks much better than old version

    4. Fix is faster in my experiment than even navicore

    5. One feature which should be added is to automatically position to my current position (rather than asking for the user to select a option or press a key)

    6. Map’s 3D mode view is very good with blue sky visible in the background.

    7. Search option in the main view is a good addition.

    8. Why is country and City first choice (user is interested in street address first and this should be made as the first option)

9.On the navigation side Nokia maps 2.0 seems to be ahead (a little ) to Navicore.

Good work in improving the experience with Nokia maps2.0 but it is still not upto what it should so keep up the good work and do little more and you will reach very good stage.

  152. MESSAGE TO MAPS 2.0 BLOGGERS - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING.

PLEASE don’t WASTE this opportunity to input into the development of Nokia Maps 2.0.

In particular, please READ the KNOWN ISSUES list and Nokia’s FAQs, AND PREVIOUS POSTS before posting - and please, if its been said before, ask yourself whether its necessary to say it again. If you want your own post to be read, take the trouble first to read what others have already posted.

    In particular:

    1. PLEASE STOP POSTING COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE MAP DATA. The KNOWN ISSUES list says “New map data (upgrade via the new Map Loader) is also still in beta and, for example, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are not drawn correctly.” So please don’t waste space in this blog continually complaining about it. Especially saying the same thing over and over again e.g. New Zealand, Pakistan etc. Enough already!

    2. E90 users - there’s clearly a big problem for you - but please don’t keep posting the same complaints over and over again. I’m sorry that you people have got a raw deal, but these problems appear to be isolated to particular devices such as the E90. Others have got a usable, testable product in MAPS 2.0 Beta.

Having said this, it is NO CREDIT to Nokia developers that they have not yet made ONE SINGLE RESPONSE to this blog, more than a week after it was launched. If they had acknowledged the E90 issues in the blog, or in the “Known Issues”, it would have saved a lot of wasted time, and given some reassurance that this blog is actually being read by Nokia. The current appearance is that it is not.

NOKIA Developers - do you have any interest in showing, even in the smallest way, that you ARE listening?????!

    Comment by Anon — February 19, 2008 @ 12:08 am

  153. Following on from my comments at 59 and 91 above:

In Favourites “Places” does not remember the sort order setting, and defaults to “By distance”. This is the least useful setting, It makes it hard to find the location I’m looking for as they move around the list depending on where I am. Also why would I want mostly to go to my nearest places?? A-Z is afar more useful sort order (as Maps 1.0 worked), that way the order stays the same and you can make sure frequently used places are near the top, by changing their name to put a number at the start.
    So please:
    a. Make it remember the sort order - whatever was last used.
    b. On the Favourites page there’s lots of unused space - use it to allow the user to add some quick “speed dial” shortcuts like “Home”, “Work” etc, right there on the favourites page, so that these can be selected quickly with minimal key-presses.

Also, for phones that have Voice commands, please enable this inteface for MAPS 2.0. It should be easy to do, as the capability is already there in the phone’s firmware, and it would add a lot of convenience to be able to give a voice command to select say “Home” or “Drive Home”. Rival products do this.

One annoyance is that there’s no longer any quick way to find out how long a jourmey would take when indoors where GPS won’t operate. Going into “Routes” is a lot more long winded. Please provide an option when in DRIVE mode, to select the start point, for when there’s no GPS signal, to provide a quick way to get an summary of the time and distance for a journey.

Finally, I get a lot more “Not on a Road” messages now - where it refuses to calculate a journey because I’m in a car park. Then when I get to the road, I have to wait for it to calculate before I know which way to turn - not good, especially if there are cars behind me! Maps 1.0 was better in this respect - it calculated from the nearest road, and very rarely said “not on a road”. Please restore this way of working. (Afterthought - I suppose this might be a maps data issue).

P.S. I agree with previous posts that the “Walk” option needs to recognise walking rights of way, for example across squares and through parks. Without this, it’s of limited value and a bit of a gimmick - which would be a shame, as it’s an obvious use for phone-based navigation.

  161. Further to my comments in #116

    N95 8GB latest FW.

    1. I really miss the fact that I cant scroll the map when I am navigating. I actually forgot how much I do this until a trip over the weekend. Why do I do it? If I am driving and I need a petrol station I generally scroll to the next petrol station (POI) to see if it’s Caltex (my account is with them) but now I have to wait until I approach the service station (if its on the route) which can be too late on a motorway. If I’m not on a motorway the service station might be a block or two away, in this instance I would be forced to stop my trip, stop navigation and then scroll to see if it’s the right station. I realise I could search before I make a trip but it doesn’t always happen like that. The same applies for ATM’s etc Please bring back the option to scroll while navigating, back. I’m happy to just click the button to go to views.

    2. I also realise that the maps data (v2.0) are known to have issues, however, when scrolling through a map it is very slow and not very smooth.

    3. Zoom in or out does not work while navigating.

    4. It would be great if we could just go to a website and choose the maps we want instead of having to use Map Loader. As with most Nokia software that requires a web connection it fails to prompt for a proxy password. I’m not just talking about beta products either. Let me tell you it takes a long time to download a major city over a GPRS connection. Its 3G when I get there but that’s too late.

    5. The cost of navigation really is over the top. Maybe KFC, or similar, could subsidise the cost of navigation with a BRIEF pop-up alert when they are being approached during navigation.

    6. Even though it is beta I think some sort of documentation describing new features, or changes to existing feature, is required.

It looks as though it will be a great product when it gets to release. Keep up the awesome job that you have been doing in Beta Labs. I really feel for you with all the ignorant raves from those who don’t know what beta release means. Maybe you could make people pass a quick test before being allowed to download lol!

    Comment by Mark — February 20, 2008 @ 2:37 am

  162. I have been using it constantly in Mexico, and it has worked great. I believe it is a good upgrade over the previous version, just think that the internal screen of the E90 is not used to it’s fullest.

I also believe that the feature to have the route in text only for navigation was great to have. I hope that makes it to the final release.

Another small issue that has happened in real use situations is that I’ve pressed the “hang up” button by accident, and maybe it is a good idea to change that. It is not too convenient to be lost and then press that accidentally.

And finally I second post 158

“Include the ability to download satellite images via map loader.”

That would be great. Thanks for letting us post the feedback here.

    Comment by Artemio Urbina — February 20, 2008 @ 4:50 am

  163. Firstly, I can’t comment on the Maps 2.0 as I found out too late that I can’t load the Beta on my E61! However, I was impressed by the screen shots, and listed improvements. The comments clarifying some things have made me doubt some of them. First, cost seems to be an issue (and no, I don’t want to advertsing pop-ups to subsidise it!), but if a full map of Europe isn’t available then that’s a big no. (I have my doubts about the existing maps, as it couldn’t find a route from the UK to Sweden!).

But one small point, Nokia: please don’t use the term ‘ZIP code’ - that’s a US-only acronym. Please use a generic ‘postal code’ or ‘post code’.

I was hoping to get a new Nokia phone soon that would allow me to use Maps 2.0, but I’m not so sure now.

    Comment by Peter — February 20, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

  165. For Hong Kong the language used is now Pin Yin. In previous versions (before 1.3) it was correct, i.e English conversion of Cantonese or localized English names. This applies to street names and many location names. Example, my steet was correctly shown before as ‘To Yuen St.’ which is how it is shown on local street signs, maps etc. The 1.3 and later Nokia maps now shows it as ‘Tao Yuan Jie’ which is the Pin Yin version. This makes the Nokia map virtually useless for local users and vistors since the names don’t match the local convention.

    Comment by Doug — February 20, 2008 @ 5:07 pm

  166. One more comment. If you receive a call while navigating its no problem to answer the call but you don’t get the option to switch between handset and loudspeaker. Obviously you would want to use the loudspeaker because you are driving.

  172. Following on from 59, 91, 153:

    1. There’s a Bug in the “Move” facility for stopovers. When selecting the place to move the location to in the list, pressing the joystick centre button does nothing - you have to press the left option “Select” key on the N95. The centre joystick button needs enabling as a “Slect” key as well - this would be easier and more intuitive. I found myself pressing the joystick button and wondering why nothing was happening!
    2. Good idea to show “Drive” or “walk” in the “route” panel to confirm the selected mode. But why stop there? As well as showing “Drive” or “walk”, why not show “fastest, “shortest” etc. - .e.g “Drive shortest” or “Drive economical”.
Also, please put the ability to make these selections right there on the route panel - there’s space, and it would be easier and quicker.
    3. How about including a “calculate all” option, so that where the user is happy to wait, the phone will calculate time and distance for all three modes - quickest, shortest, economical, so that an informed choice can be made between these without having to keep re-calculating and trying to remember the results from the other modes?

  173. First of all the new look of Nokia Maps 2.0 is great. But I have a few of comments (I’m running Maps 2.0 on a N82):
    - Different languages in the menu (e.g. favorites and search are both in english instead of dutch). All the categories in the search menu are displayed in english. Hopefully this will be corrected in the next version.
    - In the navigation mode the font size of the speed indicator is too small.
    - I’m unable to display the sattelite map? I was wondering if these maps are included in the maps from nokia map loader?
    - The zoom function does not work well. When I apply zoom out it will zoom maximal.
    - I prefer a seperate gps status window (e.g. with signal strength bars).
    - Please Nokia enable the centre joystick as select key!
    - Remove the exit button in the main view. Since it is very easy to close the application by accidant.
    - I looks like if the gps postion update interval is relatively long. Sometimes it will take a second to move to the new gps position. Is this caused by the gps (hardware)?

  175. For E90 users who don’t know how to zoom in/out using internal display you have to remember first beta Nokia Maps. Left SHIFT key zooms in, right SHIFT key zooms out. Thats it, so easy it is. You can also use BACKSPACE to zoom out.

If you start typing to search field, you can’t use SHIFT key for zooming any more however.

    Comment by Cougar — February 23, 2008 @ 1:58 pm

  176. Following on from 59,91,153:
I’ve noticed a couple more bugs, as follows:
A serious bug for uk users whereby only the 1st 4 characters of the UK post code are used in the search. This means that postcode searches are so inaccurate as to be useless. The UK post code is the single most used and most useful search citerion in the UK, and it is very important that you provide full 7 character postcode searching, in order to have a competitive product in the UK, and to avoid having a lot of very disappointed UK users.
    2. There is a bug that incorrectly estimates journey times in the UK, as much shorter than they can be in reality - at least in the Manchester area. In Maps 1, the estimated time was reassuringly generous, so that you were likely to arrive on time even if the traffic was quite bad. In Maps 2, you’d need to be travelling by helicopter, or at least seriously breaking the speed limits on a clear road with no traffic, in order to achieve most of the estimated journey times.

  188. I love it, and thanks for your ongoing development work.

The only bug I’ve found is that when the displayed map is my home in Hong Kong and I search for “airport”, the results under “Walk” and “Drive” do not show Hong Kong Airport, but instead show airports in Thailand and Taiwan!

Also, when the displayed map is a hotel in Nuremburg (where I’m going next month), and I search for “airport”, it does not show Nuremburg airport, only Munich.

  189. Hi,
Does anyone from NOKIA actally answer any of the questions / problems posted on this blog ?
I have not seen a single decent reply!!!

i tried MAPS 2 on my nokia n95 (t-mobile uk) and everytime i tried to use navigate (and i do have the navigation option paid for) the software crashed back to the home screen.
i cant use it at all for what i need so i have now gone back
to MAPS 1, Which works great, i sold my PDA and tom tom to use nokia maps exclusively.
is there anyone / any where i can actually post a bug report too ?
Is ANYONE from NOKIA actually reading this ?

  190. > Is ANYONE from NOKIA actually reading this?

Yes. Quite a few, actually. Here’s one reply straight from the horse’s mouth:
    http://betalabs.nokia.com/blog/2008/02/19/nokia-maps-20-beta-%e2%80%93-after-a-week/

This comments thread is mostly a feedback channel for Nokia, not a support channel. You can write bug reports either here, or to the feedback form: http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/maps/feedback

Anyway, I agree that we should improve the feedback channel. I guess we should take Bugzilla or something into use for serious bug reporting and tracking….

  191. Again following 59, 91, 153 and 176 above:
    1. Unfortunately there are reliability issues when using this with the N95. Sometimes the program shuts down unexpectedly when setting up a route, and most inconveniently it sometimes reboots the phone while navigating.
    2. It does have quite serious problems at times when calculating routes, for example calculation of a route near my home in the UK comes out as follows:
Economical: 13.6 miles, 20 minutes; Shortest: 9.7 miles, 21 minutes; Fastest: 16 miles 22 minutes.
What do we make of that! “Economical” is faster than “Fastest”, “Fastest” takes longer than either of the other two, and “Shortest” is so much shorter than “Fastest” that even if it were to take slightly longer than “Fastest”, it might still be the best route.
    So:
a: The calculations are obviously faulty or unreliable at the moment, and
    b. This highlights the need for some improved intelligence about types of route when calculating. Either Maps 2.0 needs to inform you of the distance and time for all three options whenever you calculate a journey so that you can then choose the best compromise (my favoured solution) for that particular route, OR it needs some fuzzy logic to make a better choice of the best route so that it doesn’t for example send you on a journey that is twice as long in distance for the sake of being one minute shorter in predicted time.
P.S. 1. I know I’ve said it before, but the fact that Maps 2.0 currently only recognises the first 4 character of the UK postcode makes Maps 2.0 almost unusable in the UK. It’s exteremely frustrating to put in a full postcode that should pinpoint a location, and be given a location that is maybe two miles away! PLEASE fix this urgently, AND include the full 7 digit UK Post Code in the “one-box” search - which doesn’t recignise UK post codes at all at present - so for UK users isn’t a one-box search.
    2. Also, again I’ve said it before, but as there’s no reason for people to put a country name in their contacts for each person (unless the person isn’t in the user’s home country), MAPS really does need to assume a default when searching “From Contacts”. Currently it refuses to search until you’ve entered a country every time, which is very tedious and completely unnecessary.

  192. >i tried MAPS 2 on my nokia n95 (t-mobile uk) and everytime i >tried to use navigate (and i do have the navigation option >paid for) the software crashed back to the home screen.

Maps 2 requires requires firmware version 20.0.015. That isn’t available for UK T-Mobile phones, despite the fact that it was released over 3 months ago. You must be running Maps 2 on the old version of the firmware.

I’d encourage you and all other UK T-Mobile users to get in touch with T-Mobile and tell them to get this problem sorted out. You can contact them here: http://www.mobile-phones.co.uk/contact-us.htm

I contacted them myself and was told that discussions between Nokia and T-Mobile are “ongoing” and that it could be “quite some time” before the new version of the firmware is released.

Both Nokia and T-Mobile need to m
