Nokia Text Messenger beta launched (Windows Vista gadget)

textmessenger.PNG

Here’s a small - but really nice - treat for Windows Vista users (about 15% of Beta Labs visitors). Nokia Text Messenger is a Windows Vista gadget, with which you can view your latest SMS messages, and send new ones, conveniently from your Windows Vista sidebar.

It should work on all Nokia devices compatible with PC Suite. Just make sure you have 6.85 or later installed.

In case you are wondering about overlaps in Beta Labs application list, we are investigating different approaches for marrying your phone with your PC, including Nokia PC Phone, My Mobile Site Widgets, and now Nokia Text Messenger. What do you think about the latest approach?

  1. This is wonderfull! I wish the new texts would show up faster on the pc though - right now there is bit of delay - first the msg gets to the phone … then wait…. then on the pc.

  2. I really wish you guys’d either magically make this compatible with windows xp somehow or make an attachment/plugin for pc suite to do the same thing .
The current way of reading msgs via pc suite is a pain.

  3. Is this App only for Americans?
I (German) installed the app (Vista Ultimate), the folder C:\Users\DerGrinch\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\TextMessenger.gadget (installation folder) was created, in there a couple of files, but even after a restart, I can’t see the TextMessenger-Gadget in the gadget-list. A (english) Version which works also on German Vistas would be really great.

  6. I love the idea.
Ran into some problems with NSeries PC Suite, though, so I’m downloading the latest PC Suite to test that, but now that my PC is powerful enough that I don’t have to count every CPU Cycle, I’m sure I’d love this

  7. Bug : If you empty your inbox and get the message ‘Phone inbox empty’ you lose the create new message button. so you have to have at least 1 message in your inbox to create a new message.

  8. I’ve installed it on Vista HP 32bit with the latest PC Suite. Gadget appears on the sidebar fine but says “No Phone Connected” even though the PC Suite is functioning perfectly and can see my N95 8GB.

    Any ideas?

  9. You need to focus on

1: making exiting new apps that run on the phone

2: opening the protocols and interfaces, to enable all operating systems to coomunicate with Nokia phones.

Developing stuff running only on Window$ is a waste of effort in the long run

    Comment by Erling Jacobsen — February 20, 2008 @ 6:21 pm

  10. Works with my N95 and Vista Ultimate (with one problem). Though I’m surprised it’s not compatible with Nseries PC Suite (I tried with that and got an error upon installation). You should add support for Nseries PC Suite.
As it has been said, you can’t create a new message if your inbox is empty. That needs to be fixed.
Now, that problem. If I receive a message when the phone is connected to the PC, I have to disconnect and reconnect it to make Text Messenger display my new message. Otherwise, it just sits there as if there were no new messages.

  11. There is one major bug:

There is no way to access the address book from the gadget - you can only reply to msgs or type in the number of the person u want to msg.

It should load the contacts also in the program, and work something like how Gmail or Outlook works when selecting a contact - you start typing, and get a list of contacts matching what you’ve typed.

  15. with the s60 platform being so “open”, i’d really wish they would get some developers to make stuff like this linux. you can’t get more “open” than that.

  16. Awesome Application. BUUUUUTTTttttt.

I am using Vista Business. At the office. With a bluetooth connection, I need to walk away from my desk many many time a day, (not including lunch). And the Nokia Text Messenger Crashes Spectacularly, whenever I do. As well as not showing on the Visa SideBar, I have to go “Bring All Gadgets to the Front”.

    Great work :)

    Comment by bymoor — February 21, 2008 @ 9:22 pm

  26. The sidebar doesn’t show up on an international version of vista. The “problem” is that in de Windows sidebar folder: “c:\users\\appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\TextMessenger.gadget” only the en-US folder exists. On other locales, you have to copy this folder and rename it to the local you’re using. EG: nl-NL.
Now the Nokia TextMessenger gadget is available in the gadget collection.

If you could fix this in future installers it would be great.

Keep on coming those programs :)

  28. @Viran, all: If you want XP widgets check out Mymobilesite widgets. Pro: Widgets work in all Windows and Mac PCs, and connecitivity is not tied to local BT or cable. Con: You need to install also Mobile Web Server.

  30. People! This is a *Vista* gadget! Don’t ask for XP version, a Yahoo version, and for freakin’ sake a Mac version!! SHeez

    Comment by Q — February 26, 2008 @ 4:00 pm

  31. If people request xp/linux/mac versions it obviously shows a demand for it, and important info to the devs.

However for the XP guys - you can make this gadget work, by installing vaioXP build 2 along with Windows Sidebar. Do a google search for “make vista gadget work under xp” and you should find a fairly easy tutorial.

After downloading the gadget you need however to either modify the MSI package to allow installation under xp (not tested) or extract the contents and rearrange them to match the correct locations. You also need to run a “regsvr32 smsserver.ocx” for 32bit OS or “regsvr32 smsserver64.ocx” in the dir you put those files. After that it works like a charm also under xp (you WILL need however to upgrade PC Suite to at least 6.85 - important! - else the gadget will not connect.

I would like to add to the devs - a popup functionality would be absolutely excellent! (announcing that a new SMS has arrived!).

  36. If this gadget is not listed in your gadget list, you can look for it in the App_data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Sidebar/Gadgets/Text.Messenger folder and change the culture(UI) name from en-US to your own country’s code. For example nl-NL will get it work on a dutch Vista Version.

  43. This is why I hate nokia.

MyPhoneExplorer (http://www.fjsoft.at/en/) is the world’s greatest phone application for PC.

I have three phones. Sony Ericsson W880 and W890.
Nokia N82 (wich I used for three days before I gave up). Now my N82 is used for alarm clock at my night table only.

No, i’m not stupid or simple minded regarding symbian. The best mobile I’ve ever had is the N70 (though, it’s before I ever tried SE with MPE). Symbian v2 rocks. No signing, loads of cool applications. I actually sat on the toilet, gaming World of Warcraft (with no LAG(!)) on my PC w/ bluetooth dongle. (app: controlfreak).

Anyhow. My poing being: Why can’t Nokia just make a application worth using, with google cal phone cal sync, calls management, sms management, backups, contact lists, file transfers, profiles ++.

I’ve tried like 10 different applications for nokia. they all suck one another.

ps. sry for my bad english ;)
