Nokia Beta Labs Contributor of the Month, February 2008: Geoff
As Nokia Maps 2.0 beta launch was the obvious highlight of Feb 2008 here in Beta Labs, I asked the Nokia Maps development team to nominate the Contributor of the Month. Seems that it was an easy task:
“Geoff seems to be the frontrunner in the quality of the comments.”
- one manager from Nokia Maps team“Geoff! Definitely. I don’t even need to check, I remember his name by heart.”
- another manager from Nokia Maps team
Therefore, I’m honored to nominate Geoff as Nokia Beta Labs Contributor of the Month / February 2008.
Congratulations Geoff!!! I’m glad that the Maps team chose you, as you have been an amazing contributor in other threads too. I will contact you personally and ask your physical address, so that we can deliver our humble Secret Nokia Maps Gift Pack to you.
@Geoff: congrats bad boy! You troubled some waters there:-)
@Tommi: “secret (…) gift pack”? wow. What the hell could be?

Congrats Geoff.
Horia - It’s clear that the Secret Gift Pack will be instructions for how to get Maps 2.0 running on the Nokia 8110 bananaphone.
It may only have 9600 GSM and a black & white screen, but it’s clear from so many other contribitors that Nokia should make old hardware continue to work with all the latest software ;O)

Thanks very much Tommi for your kind comments.
It’s good to have had the opportunity to offer feedback and contribute to the excellent Nokia Beta Labs project, and in particular to Maps 2.0.
Mobile mapping really is the next big thing in the mobile world, as Nokia are saying, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the finished Maps 2.0 looks like, and using the new RTTI Traffic information service once that’s working and available.
I really think that the Beta Labs idea has the potential to transform Nokia as a company. If Nokia can combine its proven ability for great technical innovation and high hardware quality with a new and continuously improving commitment to developing and harnessing its relationship with the customer -as it’s begun to do through Beta Labs - that will be a truly unbeatable combination!

Not sure if this is a good place to add this -
I have been using Maps2 beta for a few days
I walk everywhere, and I am perplexed by the applications need to place me on a road, even though I have told it that I am on foot. I think that it is even placing me on the wrong side of the road. Does it know about direction of travel and which side of the road I should be on?
I walked across a 400m pedestrian-only bridge today and saw my location stuck on one side of the bridge (where the footpath intersects the last road) then suddenly jump across to the other side.
Interestingly, the traffic light indicator seemed to be saying there was a problem - even though the Garmin I was holding in my other hand was tracking me with a demonstrated accurac of about five meters the entire way. Both units held in the way described by their manufacturers to maximise the view of the sky.
When I say “on foot”, shouldn’t snapping to a road be absolutely turned OFF?

I have a N82 and want to go back to Maps 1.0. Please help! The 2.0 maps lack a lot of detail the 1.0 maps had. And what were you thinking with that stupid search box at the bottom! The N82s screen is small enough without losing that 10%. Also is there anyway to make the text any more invisible? It would be nice to be able to find cities in the zoomed out view. At least in 1.0 you had little gold dots for places like Beijing. Any idea what happened to the roads, cities, airports etc. in third world counties? You beta lab guys should spend a couple of hundred bucks and buy a Garmin to see how simple this could be. So far I think you dropped the ball in 2.0.
Good luck
