Nokia Channels updated to Beta5: bug fixes, new features, simplified user interface

Dear Beta Enthusiasts,

We are now please to distribute the latest of the Channels service – namely the Beta5 – which incorporates some significant new features as well as a simplified user interface.

First of all, the experience takes you directly into the tab view where All headlines is the starting point. We have added for you the Editorial channel as default, but you may subscribe to more content by selecting Add content from the options menu or by navigating left to the My contents tab and clicking the Add content button.

Furthermore, we have added an intelligent mechanism that updates the subscribed contents automatically on the background. Without the Channels application running, installed WiFi Internet connections are tried first and when one is available and working full contents get updated. If WiFi is not available, only headline titles get updated using selected Internet connection. When Channels application is running selected Internet connection is always used for background updates. User may turn the background update off by selecting Options -> Settings -> Update content off.

What comes to YOU, our dear users, we have been very pleased to see you coming from all over the world. For the past three “beta” months about half of you have come from Europe, but other parts of the world such as India (about 13%), South-East Asia Pacific (about 11%), North and Latin America (abt 12%) and Middle East Africa (about 8%) have also been well represented. The service has had about 3500 unique users monthly and page views reached over 30000 in March.

Looking forward to provide you more publications – we got a Comics channel coming – and yet a better experience!

Thanks for your support :-)

Using E90..
The direction pad to scroll.
The Pop Advert often "pops up" over the bottom selection giving itself priority over what I want to select.

I found that it is too battery greedy when one is "mobile" it keeps hunting for that elusive free WLAN connection to down load an update.
But as most of the feeds only have new News once a day it is pointless battery consumption to look all the time for a WLAN.
I tried to disable option but it still looks as walk around Helsinki my phone frequently beeps to indicate lost or found WLAN.
That coupled with the "pop up" obscuring part of the E90 screen.

Uninstalled.

Well, I just installed the latest Channels release on my N82 which uses the latest firmware release, and noticed that it's not accessible with Symbian S60 screen readers, namely Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS. As I open Channels, my screen reader remains silent and doesn't read soft key announcements or control names. Would it be possible for you to modify Channels so that it becomes accessible?

Installed it, ran it, subscribed to a bunch of feeds - then it closed and won't open again. I guess I'll just have to re-install it!

Installed and Uninstalled within 5 minutes. The adverts take too much time to get rid of and make moving around a real pain. Sad, as it looks like an excellent bit of software

Really loving the new revised UI, much simpler to use than than Beta 4. The sensor for determining the angle of the phone for auto-rotation on a N95-1 is a little over-keen though, just lowing the angle of the phone while talking to someone is enough to prompt the app to auto-rotate. Also I would love to see more UK content providers, not too sure The Sun counts as a "news" paper these days. :)

Keep up the great work though!
