Guest blogger: Martin Ramsin.
The Maps 2.0 beta is getting close to graduate and has been updated today. A lot of bugs have been fixed and some new features have been added. More details on that soon…
Download here.
Thanks for all the comments so far. Your feedback is very valuable!!
/The Nokia Maps team
The First.
*begins downloading*
Seems to have fixed the UK 7 digit post code lookup
Still laggin =/
I have already downloaded it to my N95 8GB. Program starts and works without problems till now. It seems to be faster than earlier beta. The coverage is also better, but I'm not sure because before I have updateg the application only and maps left from 1.2 version. I have connected internet in between i program was downloading something (may be updated maps?). I don't know.
In polish best navigation system www.automapa.pl there is publisher information about actual version of maps. May be in Nokia should me simillar?
I love it!!
now the UK postcode is fixed it does EXACTLY what it should do .. Well done Maps Team!
Is there any way to get the spoken commands less repetitive?
One of the biggest missing features is ability to search off-line as well as searching on-line. Definitely a difference between both
On E90, biggest gripe is the tiny font for street names, even when you zoom in. Likewise the menu fonts are too small. Maybe this is so they fit on the external screen but with all that space on the inside screen, it could be made clear enough to compete with conventional in car GPS systems.
Once again, VERY DISAPOINTED to see that product such as E61i are still not supported.
What is the value of a large screen if you cannot really use it?
Shame
I had installed 1st Beta version of Maps 2.0 and it crashed continuously when re-rounting, besides displaying "Not in road" msg even in main streets. Will test this bug in this 2nd Beta version. But due to this problem I was expecting to be able to complety remove Maps 2.0 beta 1 and install a fresh version. It must be possible?
Additionally, there is no 3 years plan anymore with the "excuse" that new services were aggregated. Come on!!! And the price of the license is more expensive now. You do not refund money in Beta releases so why the minimun trial period I see in Beta 2 is 30 days!! We are working for free for you to help improve this product! So why dont u everytime release a new Beta provide 3 days for free! Do you want us to pay to find bugs ?? Come on again!
Sad that I can't use this software with my brand new E61i. It seems to be already old. Hopefully the final version will support non-FP1 phones or those phones could be upgraded to FP1 level with firmware update.
very good, is working well for me on my N95, just missing two features: automatic option to day/night colors and way to select fast or shorter way during navigation
Hybrid is great but we need more maps in Egypt
I have observed same problem as Johan. I try to zoom out, it goes but when I stop zooming it automaticly zoom in again.
I have also N95 8GB with newest software (v.20....) and I didn't notice such problem as describe by Grant in post #66.
Everuthing works fine. Yesterday tested during the trip long about 600km with many stops, switch maps off, an on again etc.
Hi, I know that Libya is probably not on the top of your list for landmarks and business's, but this is ridiculous. theres literally nothing on there. I have been saving various locations on the maps as im fairly new to libya, is there any way people who save locations can send them in to you guys to put on the maps for everyone else. obviously there might be issues with people messing around with various locations and what not, but this is only Libya right??
thanks
Works very well so far on my N95 8Gb
Gets a GPS lock very quick even inside the house.
Bought the traffic for a month (£3) will give it a try.
Full UK postcode search works well in the search box (On the first Beta I had to select search > addresses etc..the search box didn't seem to work for postcodes)
Downloaded new maps for the Uk & Denmark, will give it a try when I'm in Denmark next week!!
Only minor down side so far is that I preferred the graphics on version 1.2 (blue) but suppose I'll get used to it.
After 2 months of useage-Works well and has never let me down yet. I like the idea of subs so you pay for it when you use it and the costs don't seem that bad.
thanks

Installed the first beta on my N81 but I can't install this latest beta because it keeps telling me there is not enough memory. I had cleared up to 8MB of memory but it's still not enough and I can't find a way to remove the one already in the phone.
Anyway to solve this problem?
halo.tankish

i no virtually zip of most of what is happening here. is the new beta 2 a trial?
Can anyone confirm if it works on E90. Earlier beta version had error in user interface when the phone was in PDA mode, e.g. Option and Exit buttons were opposite to where they were shown. Has it been fixed?
Also, Maps application was crashing after 10-15 minutes of navigation by car. I had hard time getting rid of 1st beta version. I don't want to go through the same process again, so some info would help.
I have a N95 and my wife has a E61i, not a "obsolete" smartphone from Nokia, but unable to run Maps 2.0... What a pity!!!
But what I find very annoying is the fact that map data from version 2.0 is more actual than version 1.0.
I just expect Nokia keeps updating map data for Maps 1.0.
I am using this latest Beta Maps on my E90 with no problems.
But here is an important point.
I have never updated my Fw from V07.24.0.3 12.June.
Therefore I do not have AGPS.
I only use this application as a street directory and a location finder. i.e: Where am I and how far is it to where ever.
I do not use it as live navigator as IMO the screen is too small to be viewed safely in a car. (come the first road accident caused by someone looking at their mobile's display instead of watching the road there will be legislation demands).
The main change that took me a while to sort was the loss of the "Show Satelite data" in the normal MAPS view options.
It is only availabe via "GPS Data" .. "Location/options."
So If I open MAPS and want to check if I have Satelite connections, I need to toggle into GPS Data to check.
Bit clumsy.
Keep getting HTTP error when updating traffic info, is there a fix for this? Apart from that this is the best nav software, great update
http://www.wolfcat.com.au/rand omrants/2008/05/postid-56/
you will see what the maps have done at various zoom levels.. breadcrumbs on roads seemingly at random, water missing, or water present... basically all very weird indeed.
The previous beta worked on my 6110 Navigator.
However, I cannot even install this version as it says something like "not enough phone memory", after install progress meter has gone somewhere about 50%.
Too bad.
It is incredible, nokia again rejected e65/e61/e61i... and other users on FP0 devices!!!!
I purchased Drive&Walk USA back in April. Since I have upgraded to the beta 2.0 the license isn't recognised. The software see the license when I update but everytime I try to navigate it takes me back to 'terms and conditions' and insists I buy another license. I have also tried to manually add the license key which is accepted and recognised but the software still insists I repurchase. I am wondering if this is known and/or expected behaviour in the beta? Is it because I purchased a Drive and Walk license which no longer exists?
I install it to my E90 without incident and it works well. The right side button menu are mixed up but other than that not much problem.
The only shame is the Hong Kong maps which is totally useless in Chinese PinYin. Obviously the cartographer in charge has never been to HongKong to know that written addresses are either in English or Chinese Traditional characters only.
Hope this would be fixed as soon as possible or you will be looking at zero revenue for this part of the navigation.
What Firmware version does the N95 8GB need to be for Nokia Maps v2.0 to work correctly????
It does not move when I go to navigation mode. Sometimes I wat to check all the route and it's impossible. Sometimes it's a bad thing, because the route can be wrong!
Great update, but trying to download RTTI data whose license I bought with beta 1 fails. Update function doesn't fix it.
Hello,
Downloaded and updated the maps. There has been definately improvement both in terms of application it self as well as with maps. Unfortunately from walking point of view maps are still way too general, there are biking roads missing even in cities and atleast few features of topology maps (rough height lines + some landmarks) would be required to give enough information for walking. Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea to provide real regional topology maps in addition to road maps.
In case of Finland for instance Nokia could team up with Metsähallitus and allow use of their maps (allready freely electronically available at www.retkikartta.fi). I would be immediate customer. :-) Now walking feature is quite useless.
Pricing seems quite steep, though it wouldn't perhaps feel so, if there would be more information about road map and schedules of new features and maps.
Zooming in and Zooming out on the map is sometimes very weird. I cant put my finger on it when it exactly goes wrong but when you zoom out for example you see it zooming out and then as the final step bang zoomed in again on the zoom level where you came from. This can happen both ways but i see it more when zooming out.
But as i said i cant put my finger on it when it really happens somebody else?
I think this is a great product and have it on my E90. Installed latest version no problem. Navigation (routing)seems fine and interface and functionality is good. However (there's always a but....) since updating to latest version my voice navigation no longer works when the phone connects to my car via bluetooth. This is very annoying as I have to stare at map too much to know when to change roads, etc, which is pretty scary! Any comments or ideas how to fix?
CONGRATULATIONS!!
It used to take 3 minutes to find GPS, now it won't find it at all!!! I have reinstalled the beta twice
Look at the blogs, most are negative. Hope you lot get it all sorted before the final release because now its almost useless and I'm wasting my £40 odd on the voice nave
thanks
I have Nokia N95 8GB and i have 2 problems with this beta release. First, car navigation doesn't work, because everytime i try to navigate somewhere by car walk navigation turns on (changing settings doesn't help). Second, it's impossible to change categories (groups) in settings (when i try my phone always reboots)
Happy Graduation !! :)
I've found the beta to be unusable when you have Psiloc Connect installed.
On startup, it displays the following: -
application closed: PosServer KERN-EXEC 3
I wouldn't like to speculate as to whether the fault lies with Maps or Connect..
Does not move in E90...
Thank you for the nz maps! Lacks navigation but its a great start! :).
Why is my E90 completly stopped?
Ok! I think the problem is solved... I didn't get a GPS fix. Once I did it, the Maps star working... and it seem to be faster!
The translation for portuguese seemed to be ok!
Thank you!
Will the final version support non-FP1 phones?
I am from Pune India. Earlier satellite images used to load in depth for Pune now its seems there is problem with the satellite images. If A-GPS provides lock with Wi-Fi connections will be an added advantage.
Map navigation seems to have become slow.
Not bad. Russian language appeared and that bug with softbuttons in Nokia E90 was solved. Thanx.
Everything in e90 is fine
Was coming here to shush the angry E61 owners, but I was too late I guess.
Other then that, I see some improvements to route planning UI, but I still think that having to click somewhere in the map to go to the route editor is confusing, even more that routes are in the "Favorites" menu.
Maybe rename it as "Options>Places/Routes"? Would it fit? Because really only one option of the menu is about your favorite places.
Other comments I would have is that it is redundant to have both Options>Traffic Info and Options>Extras>Traffic Info. And after all, will Traffic Info be a paid service?
Why does it only support FP1 phones and will there ever be a non-FP1 version? Expect E90, all E-series are non-FP1.
the update looks nice, i also ordered traffic info and i got results when i update. But i dont see that on the map thats a bit pity or do i miss something? Some setting?
i would like to see in big red lines or what ever color that there is a traffic jam from there to there..
ok traffic info still has some bugs or wrong data.
the list seems to grow and grow and grow, i get a lot of double entries and also an reported traffic jam of 68KM that really seems a bit ridiculous that almost never happens..
Also i see in some entries both miles and km..
because you dont see it on the map, i have no idea where the traffic jams are, because the information i get is very little like: location a28 distance 10km.. but the a28 is 200km long so where is that traffic jam of 10km?
Downloaded the latest version and still the zoom out key (#) seem to be stuck and continuously zoom-out instead of per click.
I wanted to remove this from my phone memory and reload in card memory but it refuses to be removed. I have cleared all downloaded map data, but no joy.
I've just installed this on my N95 8GB and when I run Nokia Maps it screws the phone up and it grounds to a halt, only way to get back working is pull the battery. If I don't open Nokia Maps the phone is fine.
Can I uninstall and go back to the v1.2 I originally have or is it a case of reflashing the firmware to fix?
I got a licence for navigation with the earlier 2.0 version, but now, even though it says I have 12 days left, any time I attempt to navigate it is asking me to purchase a subscription.
Do I do anything special to get this updated version over my previous Beta? I dont want to have issues with my license. If I follow the download instructions is that appropriate?
Which european countries will be covered with RTTI? I've installed the latest version but unfortunately I'm not able to buy RTT license - error 3. :-( Maybe I live in a wrong country. (Czech Republic)
Installed the App, then deleted and updated my Australian Maps... and they are all screwy.. At different zoom levels they are all over the place and are unusable! Not happy at all. Just wondering do I get extra time on my license for my maps if they are out of commission for the next month say!
Wow. The maps in Australia are still wrong but getting a GPS fix is wow. I now get a fix in my office, at my desk, where before I couldn't even get a fix standing next to the window. Its quick to get a fix too. Great job, now if you could get the maps right, the maps in Maps 1.x are right so i dont know why they have gone backward in 2.x.
Still no QR-CODE :(
RE: Grant G
How do you get the updated New Zealand maps?
Nokia Maps Loader doesnt seem to have the new ones!
Someone help?!??!?!
Google Maps are just sooo much better, i'm sorry to say.
Whats the point of a map application that turns off the screen light after a while? To view the map you constantly have to click the wheel to get the light on again, then click to centre the map view on where you are.. then a few seconds later repeat the process again and again..
In addition, since Google Maps use the allready existing map database of Google Earth, you have regular map and flight photo of most places allready.
Thank you so much for the New Zealand maps & turn by turn nav that works in NZ. The updated version for beta 2 is great. Fast, simple & seems to work great on my N95. Cheers Grant
Still having problems in general speed of the E90. If I open the maps, I can't close the app, I have to turn off the phone.
This problems happens essentially when I can't fix GPS... but if I open Location Tager (also BetaLabs software) Maps works fine!
Is there a explanation for this!
does it work on E65 phones?
Since upgrading to the 2.0 beta (even this current update) I have not been able to even lauch the Application on my N73. Even removing it completely and installing the full vrsion does not work. What am I doing wrong here? Really missing my navigation in-car!!!! Even tried to go back to v.1 and that does not work either???!!!
I am from morocco and just bought a nokia N82 black from usa and I see that s made by nokia not made in finland is it a fake one ?
I see that the 7th and 8th number of the serial is 01
and the code bar is begining by 6
I ant to know where my phone was made?and it is a good one or not
thank you
I got it working :) had to use the new nokia map loader.
Now my N82 doesn't show any maps after I updated. Hmm.
You can have the back light on, off, or app setting, which basically is off, unless you are doing navigation at which point it stays on. (but took me some playing to work that out!)
@Thomas
Please keep in mind that Google Maps has to download all the map data from their servers, you might end up paying quite a phone bill because of this. On the other hand, with the help of the Nokia MapLoader you can preinstall whatever country map you need on the device and use the Nokia Maps application even without a network connection.
Great to have the New Zealand maps at last!!
PS I found you need Nokia Map Loader 1.3.5 to install the NZ maps as the older version on my computer did not look for the new maps.
Nokia maps needs to be cheaper for it to make sense, really say about £20 for a year.
Using the Maps 2.0 version, the UK the current pricing is a bit strange especially for the 90 day option
1 year - £54.82
90 day - £19.57
30 day - £6.00
so it actually works out cheaper to buy the 30 day option every month for 3 months (£18.00) than to use 90 day option at £19.57.
The year is a waste of money, you are better off buying Route 66 8.0 for a one off fee of £47.75 an use it forever
http://www.66.com/route66/prod ucts.php?cid=UK&sec=1& ssec=0&prodid=5391
One other thing to add is that I really like the integration between the Maps software and the geo-tagging on the latest N82 firmware. I can take any photo with the embedded GPS co-ordinates and if I view the picture using Gallery, it gives me an option to show it on the map. Works great!
Same comment as above: The beta is unusable on my N95 as on startup, I get "application closed: PosServer KERN-EXEC 3"
As a follow up to my comment about the "Show on Map" integration with Gallery photos, I'm now finding that while the GPS co-ordinates for the geotag embedded in the photo are correct (when I load in Google Earth), but they are sometimes off by 100 - 200 metres when displayed on Nokia Maps. This is true when using the China map... not sure if the same problem occurs with other maps.
Heh, well spotted :)
Nokia just published the press release about the Maps 2.0 graduation: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001? newsid=1221761
We'll update the Beta Labs pages accordingly tomorrow (today we Beta Labs folks are still in the off-site workshop), and give you some comments from the insiders...
SpeedStar - i have and still there the app doesn't open
I think Maps works with E90, but I am having some problems actually, though I think it concerns incompatibility between applications.
I'll post here if I can solve these problems meanwhile!
hi
Wow. So many people moaning about a free product. If you want perfection, go buy a retail GPS package and see how much better off you are!
I use the new version on my E90 now for while. And traffic info really doesnt work correctly yet but i guess that is work in progress..
There are other things that concern me.. All the searches for stuff seem to be done now online. Now the case is that i already have had a day that it always said "nothing found". And i am just online so that shouldnt be a problem. But i can think of a problem where i dont have access to go only then my route software doesnt work at all? I cant find/search for address where i want to go? This is really bad. It should have an offline search also, even if it is just for finding an address, POI or stuff like that can be online only..
Also search is not really fast, better said it is really slow and not very reliable, sometimes if have results sometimes i dont. For example if i search for All drinking and food places it comes up with "no results" do i see ok only fast food then it comes up with something. Why is that it should find that also under all..
What i still greatly miss and more people are reporting this is that when driving or moving the map should also turn. North shouldnt be always north. At least this should be an option..
Also on the E90 why oh why is the information area when i navigate on the inner screen soooo small? i cant read it. Make that think on the right side at least twice as big the E90 has plenty space left for the map itself.
Just back from Denmark and the maps v2.0 latest update worked magic! Arrived spot on to all my destinations and with very quick operation. Full marks so far Nokia.
R
I downloaded and installed Maps 2.0 beta on my N95 8GB a few days ago. The installation went very smoothly as well as loading the updated maps. I love the look of the new interface however a few of the features I liked in the old version are missing or hard to find. In particular:
- Satelite status
- Navigate to / Route to (I am sure I will get used to new menu)
I only have one really annoying problem. After starting the application it NEVER locks on to a GPS signal. It is constantly searching (ie. flashing red bars in signal strength). The only way I can get it to connect on startup is to go into the Phone Settings - Connections - GPS data and wait for this application to lock on (about a minute, sometimes less) and then start Nokia Maps 2.0 beta. The alternative is to start Nokia Maps, wait to see if by some chance it does get the GPS data, switch to phone menu and start the GPS data app, wait for that to connect (about a minute), switch back to Maps then Turn GPS off from the Tools menu then turn it back on again. Then it may connect.
I can guarantee it is not a problem with the GPS signal. In some basic testing I have left Maps running for over 10 minutes trying to get a GPS position yet when I start the GPS data app it only takes about 10 second to lock on.
Only additional information I can give is that I usually run the app with no internet connection as my company has blocked internet access using the 3G phone network so I can only use wifi for internet access.
Has this problem been seen before? I hope my description is useful. I can provide more information if you want.
So whats the verdict for the E90? Working fine but still with button mismatch on the internal screen?
@ hero: Good! No!
Maps is working good in E90!
Is working brilliantly on my N95 8GB!!!!
I'm in New Zealand and have found the maps in my town to be fantastic!!! I can see a lot of potential for the contact info for various businesses also, no more having to ring directory services!
Lock on to satellites is so much quicker than previous versions and as already mentioned pretty good indoor reception also.
Seems to work pretty well on my N82 in China although I haven't tried the navigation portion yet. One issue that happens from time to time is that some of the Favourites that I store seem to disappear. For example, if I mark my Home as a favourite and I later try to Navigate back 'Home', I can't seem to find it on my favourites at all.
I like il very much and respect to the previous one work quite well but I found 2 major issues
1)is not possible to move the map while you are in navigation mode
2)how do I route when I do not have gps signal?
Anyway great job hope to get Hungary navigation before summer!
One feature that I am really missing is the offline search. Most the time, it is needless to have the online function. You just want to look for lets say a saved route or place, but thanks to the online function you get million results which you dont need and where you have to pay for.
So, please: Give us the possibility to use either online or offline search function. Kiitos paljon.
Is it possible to do an offline search for a street address? I can't look up any streets on my E90 with Maps 2 in France. Seems very strange. I can look up towns, but not streets.
Hi Guys, 71 !
check out http://europe.nokia.com/A45092
Does this mean, Nokia Maps 2.0 has approached graduation?
Good spot SpeedStar! Is this version 2.0.1904 newer than the beta in Betalabs?
Answering myself...it seems betalabs has 2.0_1803 so it's newer.
I updated to the one linked by Speedstar and it took me from b03 to b04 for E90. I thought the b was for beta?
New map data is available too, don't forget to update your maps.
Hi guys,
I hope anybody can please help me. I've downloaded countries through the nokia maps installer. I did, as the program suggests, delete the old map data before installing the new. But now I have a problem with all the newly installed countries (europe).
The water and river and land textures are more to the east and north and are of slightly different scale than the roads/town and border information. I really have no idea how to fix this exept to de install everything and do in all over again. Quite a bit of work for round about 1.6 gig.
You can imagine for the UK and, for example, for Holland it looks very messy, lots of water all over Amsterdam. I'll try to make some pictures of it later.
Thanks alot for your help in advance, hope some now why or knows a fix.
DO NOT INSTALL FOR THE E90
maps will not open once you install. Other users report the same after updating the firmware.
Labs - do you have a fix or update before you announce this is good to go because it isn't!
I think there were some files linked incorrectly. Install the Nokia_Maps_2.0_2102_3.1_u.sis and not the Nokia_Maps_2.0_2102_3.2_u.sis . At least that worked for me! (N95)
Is there any way you could make the offline search feature quicker? I've been using Nokia Maps as a police officer when acting as a vehicle operator needing to find an unfamiliar street. In this situation time is critical and the 10 seconds or so it takes to come back with a street name feels like hours. I've got other map software installed on my N95 which can find an address much quicker.
The new app works just fine on the E90, no issues at all.
If you update the E90 firmware, then you will need to re-install Nokia Maps...that's all. The new version of Nokia Maps worked perfect for me both before and after the firmware upgrade.
Hi, I tried to install ver. 2 and I was told i could not because previous version was built in, since then the application will not zoom in to street level, it gets to a certain resolution and then closes.
Any ideas lied the previous app very much and would really like to get it working again.
My map version is v1.2 wko7 bo2 lm
the only maps I have installed are for The Republic of Ireland.
Please help thanks.
hi, is there anyway i can load nokia mps 1.0. the reason i ask is that im in Libya, and maps 1.0 was more detailed. it seems maps 2.0 has removed all but the big main roads, there used to be all the side streets and alley ways.
or. can you guys please change the libya maps to the same maps as maps 1.0
i used to use nokia maps all the time because of the detail, but im finding myself using gmaps more
please fix this issue
About missed or shfted water on the maps - try to reinstall maps on the phone. It could help :)
